I've been trying for hours and the damn thing won't let me. It's driving me nuts! I know the button must be somewhere....

Apparently it is not easy, maybe not even possible. I have copied for you the info from Google.

Currently, it's not possible to remove Google Voice from your Google Account, but we're working on making this option available. Meanwhile, if you no longer want to use your Google number, uncheck all the phones you're forwarding calls to in the Phones tab of your Google Voice Settings and/or enable 'Do Not Disturb' so calls won't get forwarded to your phones and callers will be sent to voicemail.
