use your previous training for the future. there are a number of books on the subject you seek. try fetlife.com , it is a friendlier sire, and has hundreds of groups within the site to help guide you.

Just some tips for starting, you need some way to safety cut the ropes away like a set of surgical scissors. And make sure that blood can get to all the extremities you should be able to slide a finger under the ropes. You should pick up a book more then the internet someone can be responsible if something went wrong and a book told you it would be safe so they tend to have research done on them.

Forget about knots. You want to wrap the rope around her several times to spread the pressure out. You want the rope loose enough to slide a finger under it, otherwise it will cut in. The book to teach you about safety is Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage. After that The Knotty Boys have a couple of books out, also youtube videos.

And yes, get a pair of EMT shears from the drugstore, under ten dollars and invaluable.

Okay, the basics I first learned, and yes I am repeating others:

1. A pair of EMT or safety shears is about $5 and invaluable. Always keep a pair EASILY GRABABLE when you're in a scene. Even if you never use them in an emergency, they're the best way to cut rope short of the heat cutters that cost way too much and aren't portable.

2. Never use a slip knot or anything that could tighten agianst a person. That's about 90% of the woodscraft knots I know, so you'll be learning a lot more at the basic level.

3. Always leave enough room to slide two fingers between the submissive and the rope.

4. Pay attention to what the sub says. Numbness and/or tingling in someone's hands needs to be dealt with at once.

5. Research. There are a lot of good videos on youtube (and a good thing, since most books on the subject I find hard to follow) as well as the many excelent books on the subject.

6. Beyond safety concerns, you can take advice with a grain of salt. There are a great number of people who do rope who feel that their highly formalized style is the one and only way to tie someone up. I'm sure it works, and is both safe and enjoyable for all concerned, but it is not the one true way.

Have fun.

The book to teach you about safety is Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage.

That's the book that I own as well.  I happen to think it's pretty good, even for a beginner.  Plenty of diagrams included.

Especially for a beginner. He was a EMT and knows his safety stuff.

Another  for Wiseman's book.  The Knotty boys two books have the most comprehensive photo tutorials though.

Velcro bondage straps are REALLY good for beginners. Hell, they're good for non beginners too.

This is my first post on Collar me so I hope it is appropriate and helpful.
The two knotty boys have some good books and videos that are pretty easy to follow.
http://www.knottyboys.com/

I am Master Len and have over 20 years of experience.
I have four instructional videos on bondage.  Below is a link to beginning bondage DVD.  It covers the basics, safety and a couple simple ties.
http://www.masterlen.net/display2.mv?Show+Educational+V901+All
It sells for 19.95  and here is a discount code  twentybucksoff   So you only pay shipping. 8.95  I ship UPS and that is what it costs me.
I also have an OK from the two knotty boys to give away a dvd they made. It covers safety and a hand tie, foot, tie and leg tie.   Simple and effective.
In the comments box just ask for it and I will send that too.
Anyone in the discussion is also welcome to take me up on it.   Bondage is my passion and always willing to help.

Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage.  Has a lot on safety and human anatomy.
Later if you want to get into Japanese style bondage (Shibari or kinbaku) there take a look at Madori
Here is a link to the stockroom and they have them.  You may want to check amazon.com for a better price but they rarely can be found used.
