Well its simple..if he charges 1 penny per person to watch him play and 1 million people watch him (on tv, etc), then he gets 1 million pennies he made 10,000 dollars from 1 game. with 162 games in a season, let us assume he plays 100 of them. That is 1 million dollars. Now we can go back and look at how many people ACTUALLY watch the games, etc and see if he is making a large amount per person watching.

People who make alot of money do it through volume, not ripping people off (usually).

Oil companies, as corrupt as they are, make pennies (about 8 pennies) per gallon if I recall correctly. In the USA the government profits about 50 pennies per gallon. Interesting, no?

Anyway, if someone gives away money it is (usually) an honorable thing to do. No one should be looked down on because millions of people paid pennies to them and that added up to billions. The pledge is to encourage free giving of excess wealth. its better than having a private jet...or a parking lot of airplanes (some actor collects planes with his millions, if you're wondering where they can spend all that cash)

The purpose of the government should be to improve the life and well-being of all its citizens. And using tax revenues to do so is appropriate.

That's just it, the govt. wastes yours and ours...not theirs.

Most billionaires' income is tax-free interest, capital gains or carried interest so they pay less than 1/2 what you pay (top bracket) when they should have paid %50 on those gains instead of more taxes in total actually paid by federal tax on labor.

(the richest %5 of American have an effect federal tax rate of %16.6, see the aforementioned)

It was not about charity but the concept that there is no such as being over-compensated in a free market system.

Again, people seem to be misinterpreting what I was saying.

I was not talking about the charity aspect but specifically replying to Willbeur's free market theory in post #9.

And that actor collecting the airplanes is John Travolta.

Well I was really putting two posts in one.... the top half about the baseball player being an explanation of how a baseball player, or oil company, can get overly rich while not being overly rewarded per transaction, which was for you, RML.

The second half that you quoted was for people who are saying the wealthy should be required to return their money.

And thank you for the actors name, I couldn't think of it.

I'd just set up my own charitable trust.
If I were a billionaire why would I want to meet other billionaires? Besides "money" what would we have in common?
I doubt I could get Bill or Warren to hit the strip clubs for the night. They're probably in bed at 9 or 10 pm.
