What makes a Dom a Dom? (Full Version)

I have read quite a few and heard quite a few stories about self titled "Masters" and "Dominates" since my return to CM that I am here late night thinking, "What makes a Dom a Dom"? I have my own opinions but I would like to hear from the community in words not links please what you think makes a Dom a Dom. What qualities should that person possess, what kind of temperament, etc... I know there is no cookie cutter formula its just something I was thinking about and well like all good hmmmm thinking about something moments thought I would share the question and see what others have to say.

leadership abilities, confidence, a rather healthy ego, someone who has Mastered his own life, is responsible, doesn't have any desire to follow, maturity, knowledgeable about life and love

A specific gene, perhaps? I know it's not nurture as my upbringing was every bit as happy and healthy as my flagrantly vanilla older sister's and younger brother's was.... I find egalitarian relationships deeply unfulfilling. I'm what 'nillas or the ignorant in general might call a "control freak" - that I have a need to control my partner and the greater relationship. Allied to that is that I'm not an abusive arsehole; that my needs can only be fulfilled by a partner whose submissive needs complement my own in her desire to be controlled. Ergo, I'm generally what's termed a 'Dominant'. Focus.

big Leather boots with buckles, assless chaps, mirror sunglasses, slicked back hair or oh... one of those leather police hats. Lots of chains, maybe some peircings and tattoos, ohhh! and a flogger, gotta have a flogger. No wait! a riding crop, sweet!
