DrSteveB -> so few switches? wrestling=interactive switch? (4/29/2006 9:28:39 PM)

I am newbie to the whole "official" bdsm/alt scene. This is really many overlapping & related questions and comments in one: I have most surprised by how few self identified switches are compared to dom or sub, and the vehemance some seem to have about these categories. It seems very artificial to me. Whether it is erotic play and/or full blown sex, it seems that most folks, especially those who are more adventurous (beyond vanilla)  do a lot of different stuff. Has the community developed in such a way that it is now self imprisoning?

I guess I am biased in that I have been reasonably adventurous in regular sex all along.  Then my special kink has led me to explore BDSM.  And of course my own thing is wrestling (erotic combat or combatice erotics in Brame's terminology), which I perceive as  an interactive sweaty switch... two-way competitive massage... Resistance play, Force play, Domination, Submission and Switching, all in one.

Can somebody who has been around explain all this? What do you all think?

I don't think the community is self-imprisoning.  Some people might be boxing themselves in, but the majority have simply found a spot that they're comfortble with.  All BDSM is, is searching for the most comfortable method of expression of desire.  If more people are happy in being just a dominant or just a submissive, good for them.  It only becomes a problem when they won't consider other options, and start playing down their desires so they fit where they think they should.  I would say that this is the exception rather than the rule, though.  After all, most had to be pretty open-minded to start exploring the lifestyle in the first place.

hi-5 on the wrestling :)

my reason for not identifying as a switch in my profile because almost all of my play experience has been as a top (and when I bottomed I topped from the bottom), I have a sub (who is a switch who used to topm others, but our scenes are with me top and him bottoming to me) and I only play with him, looking for a houseboy, don't need to come up by people screening and not reading profiles before mailing that I get sometimes anyway
