It’s about time this segregation came to an end. I know several people who have served in all of the branches of the military and from talking to them the two things that the brass is worried about are:
Bad PR: How will we (the military) look if an openly gay soldier is assaulted or even killed by men in his own unit?
Law Suits (which can also lead to bad PR): In the normal joshing and ribbing that goes on in the ranks, all it takes is one overly sensitive person.
While there will always be some assholes in any group, my conversations lead me to believe that most soldiers could care less about gay people in the ranks. One friend of mine described it this way…
‘When I’m in the middle of combat I don’t give a shit if the guy next to me is black or white, gay or straight – hell, I don’t care if they are male or female. The only thing I care about is: can they shoot straight?’
