I went out w/ a friend the other night who has asthma.
I had a brand new inhaler and she looked at me curiously when I sprayed it into the air 4 times. She then asked why I was doing that and I explained it was new and so I had to prime it first.
She had no idea what I was talking about.

Apparently she is not alone.

Here is an article from the NYT discussing the changes people may be unaware of.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/13/health/13asth.html?_r=1

I sent it to her and she didn't know any of it.

It occurred to me maybe it might be helpful to someone here.

Another nice note is clean them too. They are germ collectors.

Well with the new ones cleaning them once a week is a must as they begin to clog and become less effective.

Do people not read instructions?  They need to be primed on the first use and also if it's been a few weeks since use.  And yes, cleaned too.  In semi-related news, since I've been going to a chiropractor, my dependence on albuterol has significantly increased.

The priming instructions have changed from before.
The old inhalers just needed 2 squirts, whereas these need 4.
Some people may not be aware of that.

The article makes several other points about the new delivery system and how it changes the way inhalations are done etc.

One of the albuterol inhalers I have now has an actual count down on it for doses.

It is a wonderful feature as I only use it as a rescue inhaler and generally go long intervals in between.

My best move was quitting smoking. The respiratory illnesses are less and less intense when they come.
