About a month ago, I finally broke down and installed Internet Explorer 8.
While I did notice some benefits to my internet experiences, I have also
come across an issue that seems to be affecting my profile here on Collarme.

Granted, I only had 3 or 4 brief paragraphs to begin with, but I was initially pleased
with the font choice and sentence and paragraph structure. However, I made one teeny
weeny change to something in my text the other day, and all of a sudden what was once

blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah,
blahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah,

Is now
blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah

blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah.

Or even worse,
blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah blahblahblahblah.

I practiced fixing this 1001 different times already, and did so using every variation possible.
No copy and pasting, different font sizes, no italics..etc. I deleted my "cookies" each time, rebooted,
even tried it on Firefox. Sometimes I would get so close to it being "just right" but there was always this
one random sentence that was spaced incorrectly. I also contacted support for assistance and received
an acknowledgement of that about 2 weeks ago, but have yet to be advised of a good fix for it.

I know this may be a petty thing to worry about for most, but I have always strived to present myself in the
best manner possible, regardless of the medium, and this issue makes my profile look stooopid!
I have resorted to deleting the text completely, and using a test account to continue toying around in hopes
I find an answer. In the meantime, have any of you wonderfully helpful readers come across this issue yourself,
and if so, have you found a resolution for it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

But...but...but...it's been my friend for years and years!
And Firefox caused the same issue.

Perhaps a moderator would be so kind as to go to their google analytics and break down visitors by browsers? Meanwhile, I will perform cross browser compatibility testing.

I have noticed that if when I'm typing I see (in Chrome)

blah blah

blah blah

when I'm done it comes out:

blah blah

blah blah

so I have to delete what looks like an appropriate space.

While none of the super geeks I know use IE, the majority of the browsing world does.

I would suggest you make sure you have no phantom characters, but you've already said you are not copying and pasting.

------

My profile renders the same in IE8, FF3, and Opera.

Feel free to PM a screenshot of the problem you're having, both as it appears in edit mode and in your browser, and I will be happy to troubleshoot.

Best,

KK

IE8 was a pain for me.  After about a week, I deleted it and went back to 7.  No problems since.

Good luck!

Then it's probably not browser related.

Thanks for your efforts kk.
I've even played around with the bottom right corner of the profile text box
(you can increase or decrease it's size.)
When I go to view source, I notice the html has far too many<span> and <br>
I may resort back to IE7, as I didnt have this issue then, but Im thinking it isn't an
IE issue so much as it also happens in Firefox, and as you noted, in Chrome as well.

Firefox.  Opera.  Anything but Internet Explorer.

Microsoft is not your friend.

On what factual basis do you make that statement?

I've been using MS products for years. I still do. I use lots of non-MS products too (Firefox*, Chrome, Open Office, Apache, etc), as I'm expected to keep up with technical trends.

MS is no worse than a lot of 3rd party stuff and, often, very much better, especially in terms of speed of fix response.

By all means, use other browsers if you like the look & feel. But there's no technical reason not to use IE, or any other supported MS product.

*how that ever got to have more than 5 users worldwide is beyond me; awful browser, simply awful.

RF, I have read quite a few of your posts concerning computer issues.
In fact, the one I read recently is what inspired me to finally get IE8
May I ask, in your opinion, if this is happening on 3 different browers so far,
would you suggest it to be a current site glitch or is there another route I should go?

I should have known it'd be my fault :)

If nothing else it'll teach me not to be helpful :)

I have no idea - I haven't seen that issue before, and I don't suffer from it. It can't be a site glitch else I'd have an issue (My setup: Win7, IE8, and just checked using FF and Chrome and they're fine too, as best I understand your problem) - first of all, make sure you have all latest updates, as a baseline, except if you use Outlook, where you should NOT install update KB2412171 for Outlook - it's a card-carrying cock-up by MS, which they'll fix soon - that single update, not the cluster that come with it, they're all fine.

I'm happy to look into the problem for you but I'm having difficulty understanding the "blah blah" example; do you mean it's truncating trailing spaces and screwing up the formatting when you're using a site-based box?

Also, which OS are you using? I doubt it's related to the issue but if I'm going to dig a MS support bod out of bed I'll need some info :)

Feel free to CMail me.

I have rebooted to clear any interferences or distractions, and await your CMail :)

If I can help, I shall.

If nothing else I'll be able to help you to properly fill in a fault sheet for MS to chew over.

This may have something to do with the site. Yesterday in the compose mail window all the text came out in strikeout. I looked all over the place for that option and did not find it. Also the mini word processor looks a bit different.

Also I've noticed before that line breaks come out different depending on whether you are mailing someone from their profile or responding.

In the past, DOS/Unix compaibility was a problem which HTML tried to address, and one of the issues was line breaks. I also notice in mails that apostrophes sometimes show up as ampersand apos. It seems to happen with certain users. Not knowing what they're running I have no clue why.

Thanks for the additional detail.

The weird thing is, I'm not getting any issues my end ... I'm looking into it though, coz CMails from Poise are wrapping oddly when I view them. Or rather, they were wrapped oddly at her end, since mine seem fine to me.

I thought we were all wrapped a little odd,
or we wouldn't be on this site in the first place?

There is nothing odd about my end!!
Termy, the strike out feature is the 4th thingy in the tool bar directly above the text window,
First its B I U then abc with the strike out. Sometimes, if you start typing as soon as the
text box comes up, the cursor lands there as the page is loading.

Go check the "test" ID now ... I think I may be onto something.

It's not the browser though, at least if it is it's "failing" identically in IE, FF and Chrome.

I format an email, looks fine, send it, and when I open it in the Sent mail folder (which I assume is what the other person sees?) the lines wrap weirdly, blank lines between paragraphs have become double blank lines, general mayhem.

However, I've also noticed that the font is larger too. If the system is putting in hard line breaks, a larger font would cause a word or two to wrap before hitting the hard break. That may explain some of the weirdness at least.

K.

I think I've got it.

CM's profile editor seems to be adding in, or interpreting incorrectly, CRs (carriage returns), even when "forced" to accept "plain" text. So you enter text and the spacing goes to cock, you look at the text with the "show formatting" button on, and there are suddenly odd CRs where I'm fairly sure there shouldn't be.

Doesn't seem to make any difference whether you paste from a plain text editor or Word or whatever.

I'd be interested to see if anyone with a non-MS (Apple, say) browser and editor/system is having the same issues? Just copy and paste your current text out of your CM profile, then change the formatting a bit (font, whatever), then paste it back in - have you got odd line spacing?
