I subscribe to Shelf Awareness, which is an ezine dedicated to the publishing industry. In a recent issue, I found this article blurb: First Line Flash Mobs
In a nutshell, a First Line Flash Mob (FLFM) is a group of people reciting the first lines of their favorite novels while clad in attire based on the genre (e.g. prom clothes for YA, trenchcoats for mysteries/thrillers) in order to generate interest in books and reading. Bookstores might hand out coupons during the event or libraries could sign people up for cards.
I haven't decided whether I like this idea or I think it's the stupidest thing ever. In the right context, it could be entertaining or even educational. It seems like one of those things that should be reserved for kids reciting lines from children's books or library workers promoting story hour because, otherwise, it's too juvenile for words. Would you participate in a FLFM? What would you do if you encountered a FLFM at your local mall?
But then my devious writer's mind started asking "what if". What if the books were kinky classics like The Story of O or Venus in Furs? Better yet, what if they were nonfiction reference books like The Loving Dominant or Screw The Roses, Send Me The Thorns? What if the people in the flash mob were dressed in leather and latex, corsets and maid uniforms? Of course, the local mall wouldn't be an appropriate venue, but what if the flash mob performed at a kink-friendly event like Folsom Street Fair or DomCon? What if the coupons being handed out were for vendors of handmade toys or registration for workshops like Butchmann's Academy?
Now that might pursuade me to join a First Line Flash Mob. At the very least, it would be mildly entertaining to watch. Thoughts?
