I think I'm allergic to eyeliner. Every time I wear it, my eyes itch and burn. I never had this problem when I was younger. I don't know if the allergy developed in the last 2 years due to age or if cosmetic manufacturers have changed their ingredients. My eyes are small and plain, so not wearing eyeliner isn't an option as it would have a major negative impact on my appearance. But I'm tired of the itching and burning. My question is to others with the same problem. Are their certain brands of eyeliner that don't cause this problem? What works for you?

I found out the hard way that allergies can develop at any time in your life, and to anything...even things you have been exposed to or have used for years.

I hate the standard eyeliners because i can't work the fuckers for love or money. I end up with an indelible mess that covers my eyebrows.

So...my method is to get a heavily pigmented black eyeshadow (or the color of your choice). Wet the tip of a sponge applicator or a small brush and apply the shadow as you would an eyeliner. Take the color to the outer corner of the eye and continue to application to the lower eyelid, easing the color as you get closer to the inner corner of the eye.

I have extremely sensitive skin and I can't wear anything that has lanolin as an ingredient.

Could it be that your skin is dry? As we get  older our skin tends to become less elastic and much drier so that could possibly be the problem or the weather could be drying them out as well. Always moisturize. Just be careful around the eyes.

Did you scratch your eyes at any time recently? Did you last use your eyeliner when you had any kind of eye infection? Germs can spread if you used it at that time.

I always stick with the same brand and have never had a problem; Maybelline Line Stylist in Onyx Black

Almay is supposed to by hypoallergenic.

I also tend to wet the eyeshadow and use that.

I'm not allergic to eyeliner but to mascara. The only brand I can wear is Clinique, anything else and I start yanking my eyelashes out to get the itching to stop.

I have sensitive eyes and lots of chemical allergies.  I like Almay and L'Oreal because they don't trigger my allergies.  You should also make sure you get fresh makeup every 3-6 months if you don't go through it before that.  Bacteria can grow in things like mascara and eyeliner and cause irritation.

No mascara seems to work for me, I just get my lashes dyed, never used to have that problem and a couple of years ago, BOOM, wore mascara and my eyes itched and were red!

Are you using liquid, pencil or gel eyeliner? And how old is the product that causes the reaction?

I would never poke something in my eyes. Girls look better without it anyway. My advice is to stop using the stuff.

If I didn't wear eyeliner I'd look like I had a hangover 24/7.

I have sensitive skin, and don't use much makeup, but MAC products don't seem to be too bad thus far...    
And definitely go for hypoallergenic makeup if possible, as recommended above.   M

The only make up I can wear that doesn't itch the hell out of my eyes is Aveda brand.  A bit pricey but better than scratching my eyes out. [;)]

Haven't seen anyone say this yet.
 
Don't share your makeup with anyone else.
If someone has borrowed your makeup, throw it out and get new stuff.

Please take note to what subinlife said. Makeup expires the same as food. Even if there is tons left, throw eye makeup away within 3 to 4 months. Bacteria from the air, brushes, sponges, etc. in old makeup make even hypoallergenic dangerous to use.

I also agree that Almay is your best bet. In the 5 or so years of doing professional makeup, i have found that this brand tends to be the absolute least problematic when it comes to makeup allergies.

Not only that, make-up does not go IN the eyes, it goes around them.  The only thing I poke in my eyes are my contact lenses.

I do the same Holly. Never did like the black eye look you get from eyeliners.

I do this with colors also. I use a thin, stiff slanted, brush and line my eyes with the dry powder. I like that I can control the intensity of the color.
