I see it all the time, people telling others to do a search in the forum section to look up topics that for many of us are overdone. It makes sense.. sort of. Sure it is nice to see the words of people who were here and are now gone. Yes, some of that advice holds up even years later. But, new words are just as valuable if they wish to share a viewpoint they have held a long time, or one they have reconsidered.
I like the search function for its practicality. But, when people open and respond to posts that are years old, the chagrin is obvious.
CM has a post up on top sometimes that asks for suggestions. I have one. Why not shut down old threads to new responses? I don't know if that is possible but I have seen it on other sites. What do you feel about people opening up old threads?

Telling someone to use the "search feature" is a catch 22. It may give some good material but its not a live interactive conversation, like posting a new topic. Plus if someone finds an old thread in the search feature and revives it the regulars and mods get ape shit and can get rather snarky. So other than for reading material what is the point of telling someone to use the "search feature". After all there is always an influx of new posters and readers, if you dont want to post or want to link your post from an older thread knock yourself out but Geesh.

First things first. I'm guilty of doing this just a few nights ago on the "Old Guard" thread, so I'm going to apologize for doing that right now. I really do wish that we had more folks here that were interested is discussing leather these days, but that's another subject.

I'd say at least 98% of the time, I think you are right, Missokyst. Bringing the old threads back doesn't serve much of a purpose. That 'new' comment doesn't necessarily add to the discussion and would be just as well taken care of by starting a new thread on the topic and linking the old thread. Many times, the 'new' comment is being directed to someone who is long gone and makes about as much sense as trying to talk to someone who left the same physical space a year ago.

At the same time, I have seen it happen that there has been a legitimate update. This falls into two categories. The person who started the thread originally concerning their situation who comes back to say how it all worked out. It's not often, but when it happens, it's nice to know that they are doing better, resolved their problem, or whatever.

The other is when it's an update of an original that had to do with a court case or something similar and a person comes back to update the thread when the matter has gone to trial and a verdict is in. I appreciate these kinds of updates, too. I may have forgotten about the case and not all of them are ones that I will remember after a considerable time has past.

Both of these situations I find to be perfectly legitimate reasons to bring back an old thread. The rest, I really don't. Dragging up an old joke or stuff that people just want to offer a random comment, not so much. If there was a way to close them after three months or so, we'd probably be better off, if they could be locked with a note at the bottom to say contact a Mod if a person had a good reason to open it again. (Situations like the above.) The drawback to this is that it puts another responsibility on the Mods and I'm pretty sure they have enough to do the way it is around here.

Since legitimate updates are rather rare, if all there are would be the choice between the two, I'd say lock the threads at three months from the last post.

I agree on locking the threads after three months.

Then someone can't bring them up and everyone jumps in again,
only to notice it's a really old thread. They are great for research but why open them again.

Yeah, I really hate it when you start reading a "new" thread and get all excited because so an so, who hasn't posted for ages, is back. In one case I had a really creepy moment when a poster who had passed away recently was suddenly posting again! As ladyPact noted, there are legitimate reasons for ressurecting old threads, including one she didn't mention: proving that someone wrote something that they deny writing.

My suggestion would not be to close off a thread that's been inactive for three months but to have some sort of symbol (e.g. a ghost rising from a grave) next to the title to indicate that it is a resurected thread.

I've been thinking about ressurecting Bull's "Brand The Wench" thread now that Miley Cyrus has turned eighteen.
