Lingual frenectomy... What it is - oral surgeon makes a cut under the tongue where it's attached thereby enabling you to extend your tongue farther.  Does anyone have any experience with it? What I'm most curious about is how it will affect my speech and eating. Are there any bad side effects of having this surgery done?
How much further will I possibly be able to extend my tongue?

Thank you for any help...

These sound like wonderful questions to ask an oral surgeon.

Yes it is... I am hoping for some wisdom from someone who might have had this procedure...

Agreed, Oral Surgeon is your best bet.

But also you should know that this proceedure does not necessarily give you the ability to stick out your tongue further. In fact in some surgeries it actually shortens the tongue. In other cases you can stick your tongue out a few more millimeters. If you are thinking that your oral abilities are going to greatly increase, sorry its not going to happen.

You're asking questions that really can't be answered with anything but vague guesses.  You'll have some amount of swelling and discomfort that may or may not affect your speaking or eating.  You may or may not find yourself biting your tongue for a while until you're used to the differences in mobility.  Depending on your particular anatomy, they might not be able to do much or they may be able to extend the reach of your tongue a great deal.

If you want more than that, someone is going to have to go under the hood as it were, and check things out firsthand.

Why do you want this done, OP?

If it is to be a better licker, just listen more.

I was really looking for some info from someone who has had this procedure. I thought there might be a few people here who might have done this.

I'm a very good listener too!

The most effective way of lengthening your tongue is to have it sown to a muscle fiber in your upper arm. When your tongue has grown together with the fiber, the latter can be cut from your arm and your tongue in this way will have been lengthened by twenty to thirty centimeters. [8D]

(You should not do this yourself but have it done by a professional plastic surgeon.)

I had a friend who had that little bit under the tounge in the middle cut. (hopefully you know the bit I'm talking about). He can stick his tounge out way longer, but he had this done as a child for medical reasons.
Not sure if this was what you were looking for but hope I helped a bit.

That's it. I have been exercising and stretching it for a couple of years and it helped tremendously. I would like to add a little more...

You know, God(dess) gave us fingers for a reason. [;)]

I think the potential risks would probably outweigh whatever benefit you might gain.

Unless you have a legitimate medical reason, I doubt any reputable surgeon will agree to perform the procedure.

brownsilk -> RE: Tongue lengthening or lingual frenectomy (12/30/2010 6:17:02 PM)

The procedure is for medical reasons and it is usually done when a child is young. I have never heard of the procedure being done once you are an adult.
The reason I know this is because I worked for an oral surgeon. They aren't going to do the procedure just for the sake of doing it. In most cases you have referred by your dentist or doctor.

there are some body modification places that do this along with implants under the skin to make people look like they have horns or bumps. It's usually illegal but there are places to get this done. I know of a few. I have known a couple people with the tongue lengthening done but I didn't see their tongue being all that much longer and they both talk funny now imo lol.

Dragonspinkkitty -> RE: Tongue lengthening or lingual frenectomy (1/4/2011 11:14:27 PM)

I believe you are talking about relieving the effect from being tongue tied. It depends on how severe the tie is as to how it will affect you. In some it is so severe that talking is impossible though this is normally taken care of as an infant.

If you have no real problems with being tongue tied I see no reason to have the surgery. My husband is tongue tied. He can't spit, whistle or stick his tongue out very far but he doesn't let it bother him. We have worked around it for so long that we never really notice it at all. Makes for interesting kisses lol

Good Luck.
