Trinidad has become quietly known as the gender reassignment capital of the US.  Dr. Marci Bowers, who is herself a TG, has courted PR, and the town and hospital rebelled against it and essentially outlawed any media in the hospital.

I can see why media would be out of place in a hospital, but am sad that this happened.  I'm also nonplussed at the town officials who state that they want Trinidad's identity to be something else - but haven't figured out what.

very sad. I spoke to Dr. Bowers a few years ago when I was looking at some options--she was delightful and very professional.   I went to a different surgeon in S.F. many years ago--San Fran was a great place for me to get my surgery, but the cost of staying in the city (and airfare) made it an option a lot of men and women couldn't afford.  All the best to Marci and her practice.

I wish the best to Marci, of course.

Still, she's no Dr Biber.

Hey, you can't completely dislike anyone who has been immortalized in a South Park episode.

Sorry, Steven.  I'll be serious now.

One interesting thing... the TGs who responded in this thread were NOT happy about Dr. Biber, who according to the article fit into Trinidad well.  They were appreciative of Dr. Bowers, who evidently did not fit into Trinidad.

Sounds like small town intolerance may have had something to do with Dr. Bowers not feeling welcome there.

I still find it amazing that Trinidad would turn its back on a thriving industry, with not a clue what the effect will be...

I may be seeing this in a different way.

Say what you will about Biber.  Still, without him, there might not have been a "Marci" in the first place.  While far from perfect, he still innovated change for that town.  It was his work that made that happen.

No one can deny that, in that small corner of the world, lives changed.  He did that.  If I had half of that legacy, I'd probably be pretty happy.

All true--and I respect Dr. Biber's place in history, as well as his willingness to help the trans community during a time when many wouldn't. That said, there are many of us that hold his actual work in a different regard--but the only people it should matter to are his patients.  As long as they are happy with the results, then the opinions of others really aren't that relevant.

One of my friends vvas in Trinidad, Colorado for several years pursuing an entirely different experience, gun-smithing school. The students alvvays joked about the combination of having gender reassignment + gunsmithing as local economic forces.

Cameras coming through the hospital at will? I'd be against that as well. Nobody objected to her doing the surgeries, just to her being a media hog. Doesn't sound like anyone asked the patients if they minded being on tv while undergoing treatment either.

Hi DesFIP
I know of at least one woman who was filmed in one of her documentaries....and they absolutely get consent from any patient who appears in the film...and anyone not giving consent (background patients) faces were blurred out.

If you go to Hopkins in Baltimore...you'll find a documentary crew there all the time.  At University of New Mexico, there was a film crew shooting a Discovery Channel episode for months....many hospitals are more than happy to welcome in a film/tv crew.

Hospitals make filming accommodations when they think it will put their hospital in a good light, and bring in revenue.  While Dr Bowers' patients did bring in revenue, a number of women I've talked to who were patients there hypothesize that the hospital didn't want the "negative" press of all of the gender reassignments being performed there.

Personally--if I'm in the hospital recovering from surgery, the last thing I'd want is a camera in my face--but I've seen a number of documentaries on Marci Bowers, and I've talked to her via email and on the phone--and personally, I always thought she represented the TG community very well.
