I think grief is, no matter what form it takes.  It can manifest itself in emotional and physical pain and agony and can be attributed to all types of loss and even when its buried it can seep into the very core and cause emotions and actions that can appear to be many different things.

It was and still is watching my pets get sick

For emotional pain that one is hard to beat...

For physical pain, I can tell you that peritonitis has to rank near the top.

Physically, childbirth, pre epidural here.
Emotionally, not being there to say good bye to my mom when she died.

in reply to subinlife,
you were there for your mother longer than you have been born.
i would believe you/ your essence was and is, there for her when it mattered to her.
Granted it was hard for you.
i wish to send you energy to help you come to terms with that pain.

Back surgery done under a local anesthesia. Four hours of being awake on the operating room table. Feeling like I was electricuted each time they hit my spinal cord nerve. They graciously put me in a coma for 3 days aftet the surgery. A pain no one should ever have to endure.

littlewonder -> RE: What is the greatest pain in the world? (1/2/2011 8:06:42 PM)

my personal worst pain worst than anything else I could ever imagine:

childbirth
the loss of my husband due to death 3 years later.

Watching a loved one die.

That. By far. And also being the one named on the Advanced Directive with a DNR and removing the breathing apparatus even though it is their wish and watching what is termed as the Cheyne Stoking.

From wikipedia " Hospice personnel sometimes document the presence of Cheyne-Stokes breathing as a patient nears death, and report that patients able to speak after such episodes do not report any distress associated with the breathing, although it is sometimes disturbing to the family".

Yes it is extremely disturbing to the family, especially when it is the last thing you witness after you remove their oxygen mask. I hope to never have to be part of that again. It was my grandfather and it was absolutely horrible.

For physical pain, I'm going with childbirth.

Emotional pain, I'd say death of a child.  Today happens to be the anniversary of My brother's death.  It happened January 2, 1980.  I watched the hell they went through with their grief and I don't think anything compares to that.

Lady Pact I am so sorry, and I have never believed that time heals all wounds, I despise that saying. I am so sorry, and please accept my condolences, I am extremely close to my only sibling and I can not imagine such a thing. My prayers are with you tonight.

I have experienced lots of pain. Gallbladder, childbirth, knee repair, lost relationships, the death of two brothers, the loss of pets... all of these were true physical and emotional pain.

But, I can state without reservation, the greatest pain was when the surgeons told me my son had died on the OR table... we were told he died not once, but twice... 30 minutes apart, with the OR nurses coming out to deliver the bad news, then to tell us he was resuscitated, to be told he died again, to be resuscitated again It was the most gut-wrenching, soul-searching, despair-laden day of my life.

I personally feel the the greatest pain one can endure is loneliness.

Sure seems like the greatest pain in the world when you're experiencing it. Hard to imagine anything worse.

I have to agree. I have an ulcer on my heel that had a nasty MRSA infection (hopefully successfully treated - did a culture last Wed. Still have the catheter in me. Had Vancomycin, Televancin, Cubicin, and Invanz for gram-pos bacteria). Haven't been really able to walk on it much. It's really cut down on my social life, and it's rough being so alone.

For physical pain, my 10 is after surgery for a detached retina 4 years ago. Not only was my eye horribly painful, but somehow the trigeminal nerve complex on that side of my face got disturbed. Waving my hand next to my eye caused waves of pain. Worse than the kidney stones I had back around 2000. I involuntarily urinated twice because of the pain. I cried and sometimes screamed out loud. And I'm pretty stoic about pain. I couldn't kill it with oxycodone or NSaids or EtOH. This went on for almost a month. I won't go through that again. I'll either find a way to knock myself out, or I'll just pull the plug.

Emotional... Loss of a child

physical in my case, shattered kneecap.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: What is the greatest pain in the world? (1/3/2011 4:14:06 AM)

the greatest pain i've ever experienced came from M's death.
absolutely horrible and i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. i have experienced death and loss throughout my life; my family is very small. but losing M was unlike anything else i'd felt to that point.

CherryNeko -> RE: What is the greatest pain in the world? (1/3/2011 4:21:20 AM)

There is not a possible way in which I could agree less with you.

flcouple2009 -> RE: What is the greatest pain in the world? (1/3/2011 11:37:38 AM)

I did natural child birth here and I have to say the emergency c-section was much worse for pain and recovery.

None of it comes close to the kidney stones.

IMO to go through the time to overcome traumas such as abuse is one of them.

To be crushed by an enemy, and driven before him with your lamenting woman at your side. That must really suck. I've never experienced that, but I did have a problem with some kidney gravel a few years ago. Jesus Christ, that hurt...
