I was asked a question by a friend about a scene he was asked to do. He is into animal play and was told that he and his Owner had discussed "ear tagging him". Ear tagging, as in using a tag made for tagging goats or sheep. (look up goat ear tag at valley vet and you can see the type of tag)

He asked me about the safety of these tags, knowing I have helped ear tag sheep. I honestly do not know that answer to this question, sheep are not humans. My only suggestions are "use a brand new tagger device" and a "brand new tag" and "talk to a professional piercer". (Sorry, ear tagging a few lambs does not make me a pro-piercer!)

Don't those tags have some sort of bug repellent in them?  That could be icky.

I would think that making an ear tag to be attached to a piercing might work better.  And be closer to the right size.

Some of the tags do have parasite control embedded. Others have "antibiotics" embedded on the stud to help prevent infections. Some are only plastic.

The tags for sheep and goats are smaller than the cattle tags, they even have small metal clips for lambs or piglets. It will leave a hole after it's removed, but for someone willing to have an ear tag added as jewelry, that probably isn't an issue.

Infection and allergic reaction is my main worries, human ears are not sheep or goat ears, our cartilage is not as soft or flexible. It's why I suggested they speak to a professional instead of using a ear tagging device which is designed for animal ears.

I suggested http://www.showsteers.com/gifts/EarTagEarringsRetail.pdf as an alternative.

I agree, I was thinking to myself, Ear Tag? Wait, on a human? What are you two just NUTS? I mean, uh, sage nod, "Right, ear tagging, it's not for me, but I'll see if I can find out more on the safety of it." (While I scream inside, No way, not for any amount of money, not for any amount of anything. Besides, how do you find a JOB with an ear tag? Other than in a tattoo parlor, I mean.)

The earrings are kinda cute. Not my cuppa tea, but kinda cute. As a gag gift that I would tuck away in a drawer and never wear except to a slave auction perhaps.

If you are talking the metal ones, I never have used them on humans, but I've never seen them on animals cause infection. You can always sterilize with alcohol wipes, and just like any piercing need to be checked regularly to ensure there is no infection.I'd be interested to see how it turns out.
