The question is simple; do you use coasters and placemats on your table...

I got a set of both about 2-3 years ago to christmas and sold them recently on ebay...I also got another set of coasters on a placement I finished last summer, which I sold on ebay...

I fail to understand the point of them...ok, if you wan't to avoid spillages on any posh furniture, fine....but for the normal table IMO it makes more work as any spillage tends to go on the table and the coaster (at least from the clients I worked with where we had to use them) and quite frankly I ain't bothered to clean them and the table....hence why I sold them...

In general I was always more drawn to remain practical in that aspect as already as a kid I wasn't bothered to avoid putting dishes into the dishwasher which were made to wash by hand only, I preferred that any motive was rubbed off a glas then me wasting my time to wash it by hand...but thats just me

So what is your opinion of them?

I use a coaster when I am on the computer. Usually I drink cold drinks and I get a paper towel folded as my coaster. I used to crochet place mats and coasters when I was younger...

true, I remember to start those in younger days when I had 2 left hands and didn't get very far with crocheting

Also I have seen a few in my new crocheting books...I just preferred to sell it to folks who actually want to use it, then wasting here my space with it (not that I would have gotten much for them, but it wasnt that for me in the first place with those ones).

We seldom use placemats, however, we do use coasters, folded paper towels, etc. as coasters so that condensation marks and wetness won't get on the tables and workspaces.

I use sandstone coasters on my wooden furniture and they kind of absorb the condensation from the glass but if there are ice cubes in the glass I have to use a paper towel too.

using folded paper towels makes at least sense to me as you can just bin them afterwards or reuse them when they are dry, if any spillage is maybe just water anyway...thanks for that view, might consider that maybe at some point later in my life

It depends on the furniture. Anything modern, which is coated in polyurethane doesn't need them as you can just take a sponge to the furniture. Any antiques with a varnish must have them as those white water rings are difficult to remove.

I use coasters all the time and have quite a lot of really funky ones which I love. I have some made from sandalwood and when you put a hot drink on them you get the scent of sandalwood.

I don't actually have a dining table any more but used to use place mats when I had people over for dinner. Again I go for brightly coloured or funky ones.

I also used to use cloth napkins when I had formal dinner parties

They are a necessity if you have REAL wood furniture that you want to protect and care for without damaging the finish. Particularly if you have heirloom pieces. These items can be very expensive to refinish if you damage them and want to maintain their value. If you have laminate surfaces (like most countertops) there is no need for coasters or placemats as the laminate will not absorb anything.

Something that can be done in lieu of placemats or coasters is to put a piece of plate glass over the entire surface of good wood furniture. This is something I did with an antique end table. The glass protects the wood and finish nicely, while allowing the beauty of the wood to be seen.

I get that and I have 2 such pieces (3 of them but one of them has a fair amount of damage when I bought it as a lucky bargain on ebay, so I am not too bothered reg. damage on that one) but I simply don't put stuff on the other two in the first place such as plates or cups....
