Winsome, soy powder is gross! I add crushed hemp seed (from the health food store, not from the dealer) to my smoothies. Tons of protein, and they add only a little bit of a nice, nutty taste.

Now see, I never knew about hemp seed. I looked it up (as it was mentioned a few times in this thread) and was very surprised at how nutritional it was. I cringe to think just how much nutrition was thrown away back in the day when we just tossed away those seeds!

Today I did try ground flaxseed which I liked. The texture took a little getting used to, but the flavor was good.

I think that the biggest problems with my headaches was too much sugars, not enough protein combined with caffeine withdrawal. Since I've been adding protein, the headaches are gone. Also, most of my cravings too. Plus, I've been off caffeine for a little over a week now. Surprisingly, I'm getting up earlier and having less problems getting to sleep (imagine that.)

I can't even begin to describe how WOW it feels to soak up some nutrients! My body literally feels like a sponge and my skin, muscles and scalp are tingling. I can just imagine how good I'll feel with some hemp seed added !

I think you're absolutely right, sugar overload. Fruit is just about pure sugar with some water and roughage thrown in. When you say you've added protein to your diet, in what way? All food contains protein; meat, poultry etc. are protein dense. Sound like you're doing great now, I'll just add, listen to your body, it will tell you what you need. Walk out of doors one half hour twice a day. Brown rice will be your friend. Congratulations on your new life..........

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS eat protein when you have carbs.  ALWAYS.  Fruits are carbs, and you should watch what types of fruits you have a lot of -- for instant berrys are better than grapes due to sugar content.  Citrus and bananas tend to be higher in sugars.  My doc told me no more than 2 apples a day and would prefer i have only one but max 2.

You really may want to mix it up and add some "hidden" veggies to it like spinach and such to help counter act the amount of sugar you are putting in your system at one time as fruit smoothies.   Good ideas here but seriously, i would get some books and educate yourself regarding the use of fruits.  A lot of sugar -- natural yes but your body still has to process it as sugar.

I love smoothies so kudos to you on that.

*Sigh*... all those times we would stay up drinking till all hours... and now smoothies give us hangovers.

Where have the years gone?

Blackberries are probably the best fruits you can use, as they have the highest amount of fiber per serving of any fruit out there. They're also high in antioxidants and just plain yummy. If you like a nicely sweet yet tangy blackberry, find a farmer that grows Olallie blackberries or Boysen blackberries. Do not buy them at the supermarket. During the local farmer's season, buy enough flats of berries to be able to freeze them for use later in the year.

Freezing blackberries is fairly simple: Do Not Wash them, if you do you will end up with watered down berry slush in a freezer bag. Lay them out on cookie sheets, freeze until solid, store in freezer bags, and wash only as needed, while they're still frozen. (i know this because my family has a blackberry farm) You can also choose to process them before freezing. I'd suggest if you do this, just put them through your blender, if you choose to remove the seeds do not pass it through cheesecloth, just run through a fine-mesh sieve and that will allow the pulp to pass through along with the juice. Then, pour the liquid into ice cube trays. Once it's frozen solid, store in freezer bags and add one or two of the cubes to your smoothie in place of ice. Then your smoothie won't be watered down by ice. It'll be flavorful to the bottom of the glass. :)

i would suggest that if you're still having problems with headaches, to try integrating a bit of black tea, or even green tea (not decaffeinated, obviously), once a day for a few days, then cut that back to every other day and so on. That may help you with the caffeine withdrawals, and both black and green tea have been found to have certain good things in them that i simply cannot remember the specifics of at the moment. Perhaps someone else can help with that bit of trivia...lol.

Hope this helps...

I know, it sucks, don't it? Not sure where the years have gone, or who that old lady is in the mirror - or who those grown men are, for that matter, who keep calling me mom...

Hey BarelyanAngel, regardin veggies: I can't wait to get my juicer - so I can make my own V8 juices... which is how I'm getting my vegetables, since I'm NOT a big fan of eating them unless they are smothered in Ranch Dressing.

Now that I'm using yogurt and flaxseed with the fruit, a I'm getting a balance of carbs/protein/fat. I found a formula that tells you how many grams of protein per carb/calorie etc. and it has made a world of difference.

No more headaches!
