bekah78 -> Tongue Piercing (5/1/2006 5:24:49 PM)

Hello to A/all
I was reading the thread on nipple piercing and I was curious about some information on tongue piercing. I had a tongue piercing a couple of years ago and had to remove the piercing for a surgery and it healed rather quickly. I have been mentioning that I want to redo the piercing but was told that it can cause damage to a person's teeth, etc. I have asked a couple of dentists about this and was told different things. I was wondering if anyone has ever experienced any bad effects from a tongue piercing?

thanks,
bekah

i never did, well save getting it caught on my teeth early on.. and then there was the fruit loop incident.. laughs.. but ive heard of the potential problems, personlay never had any, started with a standered guage then went up to a ten *little to quickly* .. that said  i liked it when i had it, but Mistress asked me to remove that one, she didnt care for it when we kissed hitting her teeth..  and honestly i find its one peirceing i dont miss as much as i like them, and want more, i dont think i would redo that one just my two cents.

I've got two barbells in my tongue and a ring underneath and haven't had any dental issues.  But that is very individual; depends on the size of the tongue, where on the tongue the piercing is, etc.

The only bad experiences I've had were relatively minor; swelling after the second one, occasionally hooking the ring underneath around one of the barbells, and it's hard to lick the bowl after having ice cream.

Hello There,
I don't have a pierced tongue but have heard it's the constant rubbing of the metal on the inside of your teeth that can wear your enamel down. I think if you talk to piercing parlors they'd be able to give you more solid information as to your risks.
Good luck,
Suzanne

They do make tongue barbells and such out of other non-metal material to help save the dental work.

I had my tongue pierced for years, In October of 2004 I got a new piercing and promised everyone (parents annoyed the crap out of me over my tongue ring) that I would remove it when my new piercing heeled, It did do a number on the back of my top teeth, but i didnt want to take it out just yet. But I finally did, over a year later I can still get the tongue ring in if I want too.

I have had my tongue pierced for about 6 years.  If you "play" with the barbell alot it can cause some dental damage,I have had a couple of minutly chipped teeth from me playing with it alot( I practicaly chew on it when I am boared).  I have recently discovered I have 2 teeth with cracks in them, and will have to get crowns put on them within the next couple of years.  My dentist thinks that the barbell probably has something to do with it.  Since my tounge first healed I put plastic balls on the end of the rod to help prevent damage.  I am considering using a plastic rod as well to try and prevent further possible damage.  this is just my experience, yours hopefully will be completly different.

I've had my tongue pierced for 3 years, and have also worked in a tattoo and body piercing studio.  I've never had a problem, personally, with my piercing.  Customers at the studio rarely would comment about BITING DOWN on the surgical steel balls, but quickly figured out they could switch to the plastic ones, if they were prone to accidently biting down on them.  My dentist warned me that if I played with mine too much, the balls could erode the gumline on the insides of my teeth.  She's never commented on it again since, so I'm guessing it's fine so far.  I'm sure a lot of it directly depends on your prior dental health, and how much you play with it.  Good luck.

i had my tongue pierced 2x and was considering a 3rd.  removal was for surgeries and damn if they dont heal FAST!  the first time i got it pierced i did chip a tooth.  but that's because i had in the piercing rod.  after the healing time has passed get a shorter rod-it helps.  Also change your ball from stainless to acrylic sometimes.  that solves the metal on teeth issue.  i had the fruit loop incident the first time.  oh and ramen noodles are a pain also. LOL.  I miss my tongue ring but i got my labret done so no more tears for me.  I know of a pretty decent and cheap place to get some beautiful tongue rings n things.  if you want the link just email me.

i have had my tongue pierced for 4 years. i had heard rumor about the enamel chipping, so i was always extra careful about rubbing it on my teeth. i do have an oral fixation and sucked on the ball so much i put a dent in the roof of my mouth and had to swich it out to a smaller one. i would also, always wear a plastic one to the dentist to avoid lecture.

i did though, have a HORRIBLE experience [aside from biting it within the first year]

i had on of the ones with the loop on it, right? and i bit, and bit hard. i cracked the filling in my tooth and had to have it replaced with a metal pin to hold the fillin gin place. my tooth has never been the same :(

but i havent chipped or cracked any teeth besides that incident. i would reccomend a plastic ball for the forst year, coz everyone i know, always bites it in the first 12 months. [:@]

I have my tongue pierced for 9 years.

I have cracked 1 tooth. After I did that I got a thicker gauge and a short barbell. Since that time I have had no problems. Except that one time I got drunk and swallowed my barbell.... [sm=biggrin.gif][sm=biggrin.gif]

I don't have a tongue piercing but i do have a madonna piercing which for those of you who don't know or call it something else is just above my lip and goes straight through (not a ring). On the inside of my lip is a flat base which is what has caused me problems. The rubbing or connection of the base with my tooth has caused the enamel to break on my teeth and i am now about to have dental work to correct this.
Two of my friends have tongue piercings and both have had problems with them. One of thems tongue occasionally swells for what seems to be no reason and the other swallowed her bar whilst sleeping which caused her throat to be scratched and quite painful.
Probably rare happenings but maybe worth taking into consideration.

SIDENOTE

Please remember to tighten your barbell balls daily, as swallowing the bar with only one ball attached can perforate your intestines.

mixielicous -> RE: Tongue Piercing (5/3/2006 3:21:30 PM)

wow i dont think i have ever rregualarly tightened my barbell, and it only used to come loose in the beginning. maybe it was just poor quality
