Many of us sit in front of a computer for eight hours a day, and then go home and head for the couch to surf the Web or watch television, exchanging one seat and screen for another. Even if we try to squeeze in an hour at the gym, is it enough to counteract all that motionless sitting?

A mounting body of evidence suggests not.

Increasingly, research is focusing not on how much exercise people get, but how much of their time is spent in sedentary activity, and the harm that does.

I used to worry about that as well. All those years spent in my nice comfy desk job
made me think I either needed a new chair, or a bigger behind.
Since Im pretty attached to my behind in the shape that it's in...I got a new chair.
Now, everytime I'm online, I am typing from my Ab Lounger.
Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. [8D]

Good for you!

I got a stability ball in 2009 but it had a faint rubbery smell so I donated it to work. I think I'll reclaim it.

I couldn't find any stability ball/cat pictures, so am offering this one instead:

You should sit on the stability ball instead of a chair. It engages your core the entire time you are sitting on it, even if the movements are indiscernible.

i got a stability ball because i used one at a friends and found it super helpful. it was also great for strengthening my legs for turkish drops. =p haha
but i wasn't aware they came in all sorts of different sizes and the one i got was WAY too big. have been meaning to get another one, though...

Are they sweets? They sound like sweets :)

Better - sounds like a belly dance move! Hubba, hubba!

LillyBoPeep -> RE: The Hazards of the Couch (1/17/2011 4:53:30 PM)

yep -- turkish drops are for belly dance ^_^ the REAL turkish drop is done by spinning faster and faster and then falling back flat on your back with your knees bent in front of you. in tribal fusion (the style i mostly do) it's mostly a standing drop, because the "real" version is SOOOO horrible for your knees. the standing one is, too, if you aren't strong and flexible enough, but not quite as bad as the spinny one. =p

love a good belly dance
