My mother(75) received a cortisone shot in her knee Weds. morning, this morning she was feverish and complained of a headache. She called the ortho's office this AM but never received a response. Headache is less this evening but still there. Anyone know if this can be a normal side effect? Still feverish.

If you google side effects of cortisone shots, that is not listed. It is more likely to be coincidental, not causal. That she was coming down with something and perhaps the stress of the doctor's visit caused the symptoms to appear. Did she have a flu shot this year? Unfortunately the strain does mutate so it is possible she could catch a different version than in the vaccine.

Call whoever's on call for the ortho, or your local emergency room or health line immediately. Maybe she has an infection.

I am strongly opposed to the use of cortisone. It impairs the immune system, so that if there is an infection, the infection is no longer effectively opposed by the immune system and can proliferate rampantly.

If you're really worried, I would take her to one of those Urgent care centers, since they tend to be easier and faster than the emergency room.   Those symptoms may be from a simple flu, or not...
I agree with DesFip, not usual as cortisone side effects go.    M

Feverish as in flushed? Or as in an actual temperature.

Cortisone shots can induce facial flushing. It can last a few days, making someone feel like they are running a fever.

The headache could be caused by many things. An increase in pain at the injection site isnt abnormal. It typically subsides within 2 days after the injection.

As others have pointed out, both can be caused by an infection she may already have had.

As with any other advice, i would recommend talking to her Dr... or even the office nurse. They would know what is the best course of action.

OK, Friday morning headache is gone and temp is approaching normal. I will assume that it was a reaction to the cortisone. She wasn't sick enough to worry me, but I was curious, I did google side effects, fever and headache were not listed as DesFip said. I did happen on a page where people were discussing cortisone treatments, whwether it worked, what reations, and found a couple who had similar complaints, as well as nausea, vomiting, tiredness, etc. I have seen that there are some very knowledgable people who frequent this forum, so I thought I'd ask here. I'd like to thank you all for your responses.
I shall continue to monitor her, but she feels much better this morning, so I think we're OK. I'm a little pissed at the doctor, they x-rayed her knee, said there was nothing really wrong with it, the problem is in her hip, then gave her the injection in the knee anyway. It was her choice, and they said it might help, but I think they knew better.

An MRI might have given a better picture. An x-ray wont show any ligament or disk damage. Wont show arthritis either. Mine didnt show up till he scoped my knee.

If her insurance will cover it. And I'm betting that's why they didn't. A test shot is much less expensive and if it works,  then they know it is the knee. If it doesn't, that is ruled out. But as long as an insurance company won't allow needed tests, they are operating blind.

An X-ray of the knee will only show bone damage. So a broken bone will show: bone spurs, bone on bone wear and arthritis. What it will not show is soft tissue. So if you have knee pain do to swelling for strain or a torn meniscus, this will not show up on an X-ray.

The good news is that cortizone is very effective at reducing inflamation. I have gotten cortizone injections into my left knee for years and never had any side effects like fever or headache.

Steriods do suppress the immune system which can allow you to be more suseptable to infection. But this is more common when taking an oral steriod like Prednisone. A local injection does not lower your whole body immune system. Your only chance of getting an infection in a local injections would only be due to the doctor or nurse using a dirty needle or not swabbing the site with alcohol first.

A few years ago I had a battery of cortisone shots in my thoracic region. Thirty minutes later I passed out in my soup. Tis a rare thing to have an allergy to cortisone, but when you wake up in the ER after such a thing, you learn it can and does happen.

OP:
right now, there are significant number of illness clusters in virtually every state--we are approaching the peak of flu season, but this season has been a particularly virulent one.  The illness that is currently under heavy surveillance has numerous characteristics of influenza but will not give a positive result on a rapid flu test, and is not affiliated with any flu strain as of right now.   It is viral....but can lead to variety of secondary, opportunistic infections, so monitor your mother's condition closely, make her treating physician aware of her febrile episode, and should her condition worsen or new symptoms appear, or if the fever spikes again, seek further medical care for her.

Hope she's feeling better soon.

Cortisone, AKA corticosteroids can cause the body to heat up, due to it's nature. I had epidural cortissol shots and I had something similar. My apoth suggested cold catnip tea, unless my symptoms changed or got worse, so monitor her closely.

catnip tea ( while most think it is just for cats ) is used in babies to bring down fever without depressing the immune system, so it is safe in a woman your mom's age as a TEMPORARY measure only. Always see a doc.

The fever is gone, so that's good. Her immune system is already compromised due to chemo-therapy for an abdominal tumor over the summer. I am convinced the pain in her knee is due to a bad hip, she broke a hip bone just before Thanksgiving, but the joint is quite arthritic. For all that she's plenty tough, was in the hospital 4 days when she broke her hip, refused rehab and insisted on being released, saying she would recover better at home. She lives in my house, so I am able to keep a fairly close eye on her, the biggest problem is she tends not to complain about symptoms until it is too late.

I can understand wanting to be at home, but is/has she done any physical therapy? It seems that would be warranted.

Oh yes, there were visiting nurses, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. For about 6 weeks.
