Toppingfrmbottom -> Brown menstrual blood on Depo? (1/22/2011 12:27:40 AM)

I guess I am menstrating. It's not enough to need a pad or even tell except when I wipe, then there's brown stuff on the tp, not red like a normal period would look like. And I know every one is gonna scream tmi, but I put a qtip in me to see if it'd come back soiled and it is.
It too is dark looking, more like old blood than fresh period blood.
Depo stopped any an all periods I was on it for like 6 years was off it for just about 11 months, I had 1 period forced by hormon pills, then went back to the depo. Been back on it almost 3 months.

Its considered a side effect of the Depo shot, and it seems to be a common one. Brown typically means its old, perhaps the sloughing off of the uterine lining from your last period... its not always completely expelled.

If it bothers you this much, a call to the office nurse may be helpful.

Until then, you can look up this information on line. Here is a useful site... http://www.americanpregnancy.org/preventingpregnancy/depoprovera.html

Ty tazzy, I did ask an advice nurse and she said that the depo can make ya spot and yes it can be brown, if it's not fishy smelling she recomends not worrying. My last period was September 18th so I don't think it'd be from then but who knows.

September-now, it would make sense that it was old stuff you were getting rid of.

The very, very beginnings of my period I tend to run towards brown and I have them every month. I will usually spot brown for a day or 3 before I start.

Another possibility is endometriosis. Check the following link, It'll give you some info, signs and symptoms.

Could it be that you're just spotting a bit? I've never been on depot shots, so I wouldn't know first hand about possible side effects, but ages ago on the pill (didn't agree with me at all) I tended to spot an awful lot and it also sometimes was brownish, a rather common side effect for hormonal birth control.

It's not a regular occurrence and it doesn't seem to be painful, maybe go for a pap smear in the near future but I wouldn't worry about it all that much right now, hormonal birth control is interfering with the way your hormones naturally would work and side effects like spotting are not uncommon.

The nurse is RIGHT!

In your case, because you've just had a check-up to restart the Depo-provera, the colour just means the flow is slow enough for the iron in the blood to hit some oxygen on the way, sorta like rust. Fast flow doesn't 'rust,' so it comes out bright or dark red. Very light, slow flow is brown.

You are welcome, Tfb. Its good to ask others for advice... its better to ask those who know first hand... such as your advice nurse. [;)]

LadyC yup, I could be spotting, in the past when a period was trying to start I would regularly show slight rust color secretions, and even though Depo stopped my period immediatly and I had no spotting last time, things can change each new time around.

Lizard is on depo to help with her cycles (and for BC anyway).  She did have a dried cycle and it lasted for one day.

I have done Depo, various BC pills, D & C for the endometiosis, finale being the hystertomy and the right ovary removed (I had been having rupturing cysts on the right one for a year before I plead for mercy).

kdsusa7894 -> RE: Brown menstrual blood on Depo? (1/31/2011 7:07:34 PM)

This happened to me after going off and then back on the Depo. I don't think it lasted that long though.

MadameMalacious -> RE: Brown menstrual blood on Depo? (2/6/2011 9:34:20 PM)

I would have to agree that you are having issues with the depo and you should see a doctor

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Brown menstrual blood on Depo? (2/9/2011 9:55:27 PM)

MM break through bleeding an spotting, which is what I am having is a side affect n they say nothing to worry about till the 3rd shot ,cuz most women stop by third shot, if it continues non stop too then I need to talk to the dr. It's been bout 20 days of spotting. And I hear from some ladies they bled for ayear on dep. I won't let it go that long tho lol.

0ldhen -> RE: Brown menstrual blood on Depo? (2/9/2011 10:01:50 PM)

You need to SEE the doctor and let him decide. you might also need a new pap to see if perhaps you have developed abnormal cells from the depo. This is your reproductive health we are talking about here after all.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Brown menstrual blood on Depo? (2/10/2011 12:54:50 AM)

Oldhen yeah, it's not hard to get phone appointments to speak to my dr, I could stop speaking to the advice nurses and see if my doc wants me to come in. None of the advice nurses can tell me anything more than spotting an break through bleeding is expected and should stop by the 3rd injection, an I'm only on mysecond injection, so I still have time yet, and really only worry if I am bleeding severely, and or getting abdominal pains fever nasia, ect ect. Which I'm not. But I'll still make a phone appointment with my gyno or gp. She will probably tell me not to come in, but if she says come in then I'll do that.
