Typical uninformed statement. The volt can go 40 miles on a single charge. If you work 8 miles or less from home, that would be a weeks worth.

It is not an SUV vacation mobile. It is a commuter vehicle than can be used for extended trips.

You never fail to amuse.

The Volt has a gasoline engine that charges the battery as you drive.

Yeah, and until they invent a perpetual motion device, that accomplishes nothing that is any better than just driving on gas.

Nonsense. The gasoline engine kicks in when the electric capacity is exceeded.

Marini, no, a few years back when it hit $3.50 a gallon things really slowed down.
Then, when it hit $4.00 a gallon things just fell off a cliff!
Business in restaurants was down 40%! One night at 8 p.m. I went to the gas station to buy (3) gallons of gas and I was the only car there, it was like a ghost town around here!
So many people buy only enough gas to get them where they need to go and it backs up the system. That's why when it gets over $3.00 a gallon I only fill up halfway. When it got to $3.50 a gallon I'd buy it by the gallon usually 3-5 gallons at a time. Why store 15 gallons of gas for the big oil cos?
It's like when people try to tell us that if we don't have illegal aliens picking lettuce that a head of lettuce will go up to $8 a head.
They'd be rotting on the shelf at $3 a head.
If people only bought half a tank of gas at a time prices would drop.

For the initial amount of time it takes to use half a tank, one time.

For me...that's about three days.

And you never fail to embarass yourself. Charging a battery with gasoline and then running on the battery CANNOT be any more efficient than running directly on the gasoline. If it were then you would have the makings of a perpetual motion machine.

It has nothing to do with how far it can go on a single charge or its purpose, its basic physics.

See above. Doesnt matter when it kicks in, you can never run a downstream device and gain total efficiency in the system over the initial source of energy. There is always some loss of energy in conversion/storage.

Jeffff -> RE: Will $5 a gallon gas soon be the reality? (1/24/2011 12:57:57 PM)

Duh.

So that means there should be no attempt at advances until we can design a perpetual motion machine? I have never seen you claim Mea Culpa. How can 32-42 or even 72 mpg be superior to 200?

At the end of the day, as you close your little eyes and fall asleep, are you ever embarrassed by your silly posts?

Well, true enough, you are a total waste of oxygen.

I slowed down the driving when it went up-- and never went back when it dropped.   I moved all my errands closer to home.

I'm retired and I get about 21 mpg around town so half a tank will last me for about two weeks so that's about ten gallons I'm not lugging around with me and not taking out of the supply system.
If prices get above $3.50 a gallon I can really "go to the matresses" and only drive twice a week and use 2-3 gallons a week.

pahunkboy -> RE: Will $5 a gallon gas soon be the reality? (1/24/2011 1:13:34 PM)

I prefer a full tank-- then I dont have to stop so much.   I use it either way- full- half full- empty.

Oh come on. Obviously.

Hardly the "perpetual motion" machine you postulated.

The point was that indeed, the thing can run on electric, and when that's exhausted, you can run on gasoline.

That means that for the first 100 miles, every time out, you're on electric.

Jeffff -> RE: Will $5 a gallon gas soon be the reality? (1/24/2011 1:19:35 PM)

What if you died with half a tank?

Who gets you gas PA?

You need to update your will!

This also helps prevent condensation in the tank.

And realizing suddenly I'm running low on gas.

hes gonna throw his silver in there and make colloidal out of it.

Or there is a blizzard and I run out of gas and then have that to deal with.

I  dont plan on dieing- and if I do- then I wont need the gas. ;-)

JEFFFFIE,

Come on now,  your trying to discuss facts with Wilbur?

To me it is worth sitting on it-  rather then to have to fuzz with it so often.  When I was a kid- riding on empty occurred.  At 47- I dont have to run on empty-- so I prefer not to.  That is just me.

With current technology the only viable approach is swappable batteries that can be charged far more efficiently and in off-peak hours.

We all know how cell phone batteries can last for weeks, months!  HAAAAAAAAAAA! lol

Mine has lasted 4 years

before it had to be charged?
