Ya know, the ability to kiss is one thing that separates us from most critters. The ability to kiss, mean that kiss, have that kiss felt from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet I would say get's yer human on.

R.A.H. once quipped that "humans" understand calculus. Anyone that doesn't is simply an ape that has been taught to use silverware and not make messes on the carpet.

There is something to that. Though I do not know R.A.H., I was thinking the same myself these past two days.

Unfortunately and to my regret, I have forgotten nearly all my math, including calculus.

Reconsidering, the inhuman acts and atrocities committed during the past centuries indicate that a substantial portion of our species do not yet qualify as human beings.

a conscience
Close, but technically, a certain amount of respect for group fitness is basic mammalian behavior - intraspecies violence tend to be self limiting: even the victor will eventually end up maimed and will find their reproductive fitness and potential compromised, and the trait will be discouraged via natural selection, thus dominence and submission displays, which are technically reptilian, such is their utility in maintaining a healthy breeding population overall, and part of an older set of traits wired into the limbic system.

A conscience then, is a mechanism to promote group fitness, and preserve your own reproductive potential, and represents and advance over reptilian behavior, as it facilitates co-operative efforts, and supports K reproductive strategies, where the young require more care.

Oddly, the lack of a conscience is a thing that is largely only evident in humans under ordinary circumstances, that's probably because it's an adaptation to stress: malnutrition or lack of maternal care can result in certain changes in the brain that short circuit group fitness traits, like conscience - the organism becomes more aggressive, presumably because it needs to be more aggressive to get it's needs met, it sort of reboots to a more reptilian mode, and these changes may be heritable - mice for instance, will kill and eat each other if they're starving, and psychopathy in rats has been demonstrated to be heritable for up to Twenty generations - it does tend to lower overall intelligence, so much for psychopathic genius's, they don't tend to live as long and are more likely to develop Alzheimer's, etc.

Not all psychopaths will eat you, of course, the risk of being maimed or killed themselves is often enough of a mechanism to convince them to go through the motions of upholding general group values w/regard to violent behavior, and in fact, a culture often finds psychopathic traits valuable: physical courage, high tolerance to pain, etc., what's called psychopathic talent.

I just finished reading a comic series/manga called Hellsing it's about a organization where people fight monsters. The main character is a vampire known as Alucard who loves killing. The main antagonist is a man called The Major is a nazi from the rein of Hitler he murders lots of people and enjoys it and has a shit load of vampires working for him. Basically when two women finally defeat the Major the most evil man in the story the most shocking part about him comes out that he was a cyborg unlike his subordinates he was still a human being which shocks one of the women who I think always thought humans could never do the things he did because in her shock she debates wither he was a monster or not. When this is revealed the Major says to the women "As long as I still have my mind my will I will always be human even if all that's left of me is a computer chip as long as my will exists I will still be human."

This got me thinking if someone really was turned into a monster of some kind be it a vampire or werewolf or what have you as long as they maintained their personality could they still be considered human? What are your thoughts on this do you have to be human biologically to be human?

Vulnerability makes you human. Vulnerability to death(which make you conscious of time. Yours specifically), to love and the power it gives another over you and your emotions. Lose your vulnerability to the things humans go through and you will lose your humanity.

I'm way too young to know that answer fully. Come back in about 1000 years. Humans are change itself. Even dealing with one individual. Humans are everything and nothing. Just depends on which particular second you catch us in.

First, one has to look at the big picture: how are we like other animals, how are we different?

Do you think other animals understand humor and its relationship with near tradgedy?

seems to me I read a study that determined that monkeys and/or dolphins exhibited signs of understanding humor.. wish I could recall where/when that was though.
Obviously, it wasnt the same things most humans find amusing, but still...

Bewildering; how they determine that sort of stuff…

Now I'm stuck on trying to picture what monkeys and/or dolphins would find funny.

I think monkeys would find the monkey equivalent of slapstick funny.. (that may have been in the study I recall)

dolphins I'm pretty sure find stupid human behavior amusing *grins*

Why is it that I think horizontal and panting would be so much prettier on you? Maybe it was in a Macy's ad, but I think you could wear it well!

You moving? Great. I don't really know how the job market is here since I haven't had a regular job in 10 years. But the city is still growing. You shouldn't have a problem finding a job.

Reminder to self: Buy up all the mountain dew in atlanta. Set up the greedy trap. The last known wild greedy in existence. Look at the way her beak curves. Isn't she gorgeous?
