the first time i heard it i just thought "wow, have you ever read a book?"
hehe =p

:)

For me, it was more that it had simply never occurred to me that it might be pronounced as anything other than "dom" (following your French-derived "pomme, homme" examples - that was precisely my logic too) - the speaker got a little irate with me for sniggering, but I couldn't help myself.

Or, more accurately, I could have done, but chose not to ;)

Wouldn't that get you a punch in the face from certain Dommes? :)

<thinks>

Of course, that might well be what floats your boat. It’s not my gig, but it might be yours.

I've never heard it pronounced that way.. and I agree with RF.. it seems to me that saying it that way would get ya a fairly swift, non-consensual punch in the puss from most femdoms (except maybe those 19 yr old, supermodel pro-DOUGHmees)

The scene - an operating theatre.

Surgeon 1: "Have you found the second testicle yet, Smithers?"

Surgeon 2: "Yes sir. It's was located just south of his left ear".

Surgeon 1: "Ah, right - good man. Carry on".

Surgeon 2: "I'm trying to but we've got a slight problem, sir".

Surgeon 1: "How so?".

Surgeon 2: "It's no longer even remotely spherical. It's more sort of ... well "disc-like" about sums it up."

Surgeon 1: "The poor sod. Well that's one mistake he won't make again in a hurry".

ETA: I think that, if people want a different-sounding name for a female dominant, your "Domina" suggestion sounds nicer on the ear than anything else I've heard so far.

Aaaargh argh ick no no ick no no ick no.

(I'm not that keen. You may be able to tell.)

Domina would make sense if the male version was Dominus. Which it isn't. Faux-Latin is just as irritating as faux-French. (See what I did there? )

Back to important things: (:p)

I don't think I've ever actually used a Henkel - I took one of the globals to university, though (one that my dad randomly decided he didn't like because the blade was overly flexible) and my part-time-professional chef friend practically had an orgasm over it when he brought his steel along to sharpen all our knives.

Steels are great for a short term kick, but the difference when the knives have been ground is really noticeable - dad used to leave a note on the table saying 'BE AWARE-KNIVES HAVE BEEN SHARPENED, DO NOT CUT YOUR FINGERS OFF', although personally I think that was an overreaction, and an insult to our knife-technique (I can count the number of times I've ever cut drawn blood with a knife on the fingers of less than two hands, and I've been using them for more than a decade). Although maybe the knives deteriorate over time - I don't know.

And Cerise, I'm pretending you didn't just quote Joey at me, because I don't want to believe that that's what just happened.

You pronounce it like "Dom".  Unless you want to piss her off, in which case you pronounce it like "Dummy".

I much prefer the balance of Henkels. Nothing wrong with Globals, as I said, but for me, the Henkels are just perfect.

It's an incredibly personal thing though, so I'd say (to anyone wanting to buy decent knives) try lots before choosing. It's also true that, within one range, some knives work better than others, so I use mostly Henkels, but my filleting knife is (and this is going to sound daft) from an Ikea "professional" range they did a few years ago, and have since discontinued. I think they were a contracted-out batch they had made by some company in Germany, so it doesn’t have a flashy brand name, but it's just perfect (for me), despite costing not much.

A flat diamond-steel is a different thing to a traditional "steel". I've not needed to have a blade reground since a) I got one, about 10 years ago (although I have replaced the diamond steel) and b) since I learned how to sharpen a knife properly - most people don't do it correctly, and it was only when I watched my butcher doing it (way too fast for me to follow) and asked him to slow down and show me, that I "got" it.
You should be aware though that absolutely no-one agrees on this subject, and there are as many opinions on it as there are fish in the sea, so I doubt any one method is palpably “wrong”* - it’s just what works for the individual.

*well, other than sharpening your knives by clouting yourself round the face with them, as just one example ;)

You should go with 'domina', VC. A domina sounds like it could be a little brick with white dots on it and used in a pretty, pink-painted version of Dominos designed especially for lovely young ladies! :-)

You? Irritated? Shocking. I'm certain that only happnes on days which end in a "Y."

Why does "domina" make sense if (and is there an implied "only if" in your statement?) "dominus" is used for men? It's all arbitrary and a matter of taste. What if a dominant woman wanted to be called "onion" ('cause she makes her subs cry), would you say that makes no sense?

Well it makes no sense, but it would be good for parties, if they got drunk.

"Hey Frank, how are you? Did you come on your own?"

"No, I'm with the pickled onion slumped in the corner".

Yes, I sense a trend. Dominant women, prepare to be called "onions."

Heehee! I loves me some kitchen geekery! *goes to look up flat diamond-steels, because I do not know what they are*. As it happens, my dad did ask a butcher when I was little.

...you're not my dad, are you? Because that would be awkward... <j/k>

Ignoring the random insult - it's a consistency thing. I know 'dom' and 'domme' aren't particularly consistent in internet speak, but in spoken English they are basically the same word - it only ever matters online. If you never went on a kink site you could attend scene events for years without realising people were using gendered terms.

You're confusing the specific with the generic. If a specific woman wants her partner to call her Lordess Grand High Poobah the Third of Bohemia, I am down with that. If she wants him to call *me* that too as a generic term for a dominant woman, I'm entitled to dislike it.
