Today is day 9 of my quitting smoking. I have the worse bronchitis I have ever had in my life, fever has been going back and forth between 100 and 103 since Friday night. Fevers make me loopy as hell, I went to the doctor yesterday, and got cough syrup, antibiotics and nasal spray,

So, anyone else ever gotten sick from quitting smoking? Or am I just some damn freak of nature?

This is my guess:
Your body is detoxing.  It's going through stress which lowered your immune system's ability to defend itself and then you picked up a bug somehow. Water with lemon, green tea, plain foods, relaxation, meditation and so forth.  Glad you saw a Doctor.

Wishing you much success and improved health.

It made me sick too. I went from 40-50 cigs a day to nothing and it was the hardest thing I ever did. It was like living in a dream world where every minute was repeating itself. I managed a couple of days and then I went on the patches for about 10 days. With the money I saved, I bought some gear for the gym with the understanding that if I started smoking again, I would have to burn it. Really hard work but 16 years later and I have never had a cigarette.

Good luck and stick with it - the sickness will pass

Your lungs are healing, slowly.

Not only do the lungs expand from fresh air, but new cells are growing, possibly even on or around scar tissue caused by smoking.  Your fluid level in the lungs will increase too, without the drying effect smoking causes.

Phlegm color is also an important thing to tell your doctor.  It should not be greenish, brownish or red, obviously, but with your lungs cleaning itself of these nasty mucous deposits--it just might be.

If the fever has subsided, try to stick it out with Tylenol to prevent further fever, do light (then heavier) breathing excercizes to stretch lung capacity and bring the rest of the gunk out.  Do NOT stop taking the antibiotics, even if you feel better in a few days.

Good luck, and congrats on quitting.

But, if the fever reaches 3 days, it is possibly time for antibiotics.

Unless there is a bacterial infection, antibiotics won't do anything. The only way to determine if it is bacterial is to do a culture test. According to the OP her doctor already prescribed them so hopefully they tested her.

You're suffering withdrawal symptoms. Nine days is a long time, so you're probably a freak as well. Sweat it out inside , walk outside twice daily.

I suggest drinking a lot more water and if you live in a medical marijuana state, getting a legal card, and smoke what cannabis you need to until your symptoms improve.  If smoking is not an option, you can also vaporize.

Good for you!

I've read that grapefruit juice is really good for flushing out toxins.

Grapefruit juice interacts with many medications; always check with your pharmacist first.

Mainly statins.

However I wonder if the op didn't put the cart before the horse. If she didn't pick that day to quit because they no longer tasted good as a result of the infection.

Another reason for the phlegm is your cilia waking up.  They sweep mucous, debris, etc. out of your lungs.  The toxins in cigarette smoke paralyze/damage/kill them; when you quit they come to life and make you think you're going to hurf up a lung.

Congratulations on 9 days strong!  As someone in a health field, my guess is that you're stressed from the cravings. Stress leads to cortisol leads to a weakened immune system, so any bugs you were exposed to probably got a free pass.

Take NSAIDs for the fever - like Motrin or Advil. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how much you can take - the prescription dose is higher, though I don't want to tell you how much to take.

Stay strong, you're doing the right thing!  Within six months, your lungs will be much healthier.

Your body is finally healing. All the tar in your lungs and all the chemicals are starting to be flushed. Its natural that you feel sick. Your body is finally fixing what it hasn't had the chance to because you never quit before. Orange juice and lots of vitamin c will help to keep your immune system up.
