RiotGirl -> Slouching (5/4/2006 3:46:50 AM)

Hey all.  i tend to be a sloucher.  Its not overly bad, but as a friend commented i've "rounded shoulders"  though i dunno really what that means.  i think part of the problem is i've neck, shoulder, and back problems.  Ripped a muscle in my neck carrying a 3 seater hide a bed couch.  (i'm sorta little.. 5 feet, 107 lbs), back problems from when i was a kid - carrying around a 60 lb dog, as well as re arranging the furniture in my room abit.  Think i really messed it up when i stood on my bed, reached up to the top of my dresser and picked up my tv (ya know those old tv with nobs, big ol box thing) and well, my shoulders are just tight, full of ropes.  Back pain is from a couple of years of not being able to use my back with out tons of pain.  (yes walking for long periods of time made me noticably ill - standing for any amount of time was strenous) So the muscles are weakish.  Though LOL i can pretty much pick up anything with in reason, of course.  Like the bed is reasonable.. a car isnt.  Dont think i can do 200 lbs.. but can do mebbe 135.  Dunno how much a friend of mine weighs.  LOL  Round there.

Trying to put my shoulders back to were normal shoulders are takes mucho effort, as well as uncomfortable and extremly tight.  i feel it in my neck, back and of course shoulders.  (bout to the mid of my back)  Top Center seems to take the most stress.

i HATE slouching.  Arg!  i know i was once told you can break a habit in 6 weeks.  Seeing as i hate slouching and would really really wish i didnt, i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions?  Other then of course holding them back as much as possible.  Which i'm trying but it makes doing things especially hard.  LOL anything that requires shoulder movement.  i've noticed that doing things has them rolling back into their normal position and i've got to remind myself to throw them back again.

Hm and i've tramadol for back pain as it easily starts to hurt.  Prolonged house work ect.  Didnt think about taking it and then trying to keep the shoulders back.. hmmmm

So...... any suggestions on how to make it abit easier?  How to train myself better?  (and no a posture collar doesnt really do much)  Any suggestions at all?

thx

Edited - for errors

I too am a sloucher...........Sir has me do back stretching exercises such as standing on tip toes and reaching for the ceiling........another good one is to stand with legs about 6 to 8 inches apart and bend at the waist stretching out the lower back as well as strengthening it........it has been helping although when I am not feeling well I tend to revert to slouch mode.......hope these suggestions help

I’ll give a good answer first, sadistic answer second.

#1 Take you pillow and throw it in the floor or put it under you feet, but don’t sleep on it. Stop using it. That will help a lot of your back and neck pain. This will take time to get used to but it will help. You may endure some stiffness as you body tires to realign.
 #2 get Sir a cattle prod and have him zap your ass good when you slouch.

mistoferin -> RE: Slouching (5/4/2006 4:09:18 AM)

Riot, a few years ago I broke my back on a motorcycle right in the area where your bra crosses your back. After some time I began to notice changes in my posture....slouching. I went to the doctor regarding it because I had visions of being all bent over in my later years. His advice.....although it is not normally advice he would give to most....was to wear heels. They force you into a straighter posture. Not only did it improve my posture but it also cut down on the pain (at least in my back, although my feet do sometimes suffer from it if I've had them on all day). I've become so used to it that I can comfortably walk in 4 to 6 inch heels as easily as I can barefoot.

Just a suggestion anyway....I'd ask the doc to be sure.

These are an excellent exercise, both for the problem you are haveing but also for general back and abdominal health.  20-30 repititions with no weight, while focusing on maintaing a strait back and legs (bend only at waist), you can keep your arms out strait to your side, or place them behind your head (like doing a sit-up) each morning will go a long ways.  After a month or two (could be sooner, but I'd go with later because you said you have a history of back trouble) you can add a small amount of weight (5-10 pounds).  You should have a strong back and better posture in good time.

RiotGirl -> RE: Slouching (5/4/2006 7:10:27 AM)

Thanks everyone!!!  i appreciate the advice greatly.  Let me see if i can round it all up in my head (and ask questions)

Sleep with out a pillow?  i have.. but its like i NEED something under my neck.. but i'll try it.  i've heard laying on the floor is good too.. but i have to consciouly push my shoulders down as they tend to come up.. constantly push my body down actually....  (thinnk it'll actually realign? Is that whats wrong?)

Standing on toes reaching for ceiling
Thanks - i'll try it.. never thought of it before

Bend at the waist - have done so in the past, though didnt pay any notice to my slouch.  LOL Thanks, i'll pick it back up again.

Sorry bout your neck Mistoferin.. Wear heels. Actually i've finally got a pair of "casual" heels.  Bout 4 inches i think.  Ya know in the past, i did notice being in heels helped more.  But i dun wear them cleaning the house (hmm maybe i should?)  Course, Himself has had me busy non stop moving and doing round here.. which is making my back hurt more so i dun if heels will help any pain  LOL.  Pain isnt important.. posture is!

Thank you, i'll try that with the ceiling stretch, will incorporate in.  Whatcha mean by weights?  Like those little barbell thingies?

thanks all!  Appreciate very much the suggestions and i'm sooooo glad i finally asked here as i got so many great ideas on getting rid of this dang slouch!!  thank you thank you!

Try yoga and pilates.

And focus- whenever you are out walking, work your back muscles.  Act as though there were a string going straight up your body up to the sky and dangling you, holding you straight up.

Yoga and pilates are names for a specific type of exercise/movements.  Pilates is something of a combination of yoga and ballet.  Both work with focusing on your body- how it moves, and how it's placed, adding flexibility and balance.  You can get basic dvds at any bookstore these days.

Generally yes, but the string concept is to help envision how to position yourself and not to make it seem like such an all over body workout.  Once you get your body in the habit, it will go on its own.

So you wanna save me the trouble of going out and buying something and explaining specifically which ones you mean?

Do a net search for "yoga posture" and I'll be you find lots of sites that give pictures and descriptions of positions that will work perfectly for you and your particular body.
