The victim, 27, e-mailed John Hopkins, 45, about his Web ad, which said he had a room in his East Williamsburg apartment, police sources said. After telling her she could stay for free if she cooked and cleaned, Hopkins paid for her plane ticket and picked her up at Kennedy Airport on Feb. 4, according to the sources. As soon as they arrived at his place on Humboldt Street, Hopkins allegedly told the woman that she was to be his slave. He then allegedly blindfolded and gagged her, handcuffed her to a radiator, and began beating and raping her. For the next eight days, Hopkins allegedly kept the woman chained in his apartment, but then allowed her to leave for a job she had landed at a Manhattan restaurant. Bizarrely, the woman did not call 911 while she was away from her alleged tormentor. But last Saturday, she contacted her mother, who alerted the NYPD. When cops arrived, they found her shaking on Hopkins' bed. She was treated at Woodhull Hospital.

Then, I can't imagine this guy takes the woman captive, abuses and rapes her for days on end, and then he lets her go because she says "Oh, I'm sorry...could you let me out? I have a job interview" And then she calls her mother...and goes BACK to the apartment where police find her. Trying to picture the prospective employer: "Can you come in Tuesday?" "Sorry...I'm chained to a radiator at the moment. How about next Friday?"

(Not saying that happened in the NYC case, just a general comment on "free to female" craiglist housing ads.)

Not a manhater in the least, but I daydream about busting the sack of any SOB who tried to hold me against my will ANYwhere without a gun to my head for longer than three seconds, first time his back was turned. IMO, the story has too many gaping holes that were not on the person of the female protagonist. Just sayin'.

Even if the Defense had possession of emails or a Contract from the victim consenting to being the Defendant's sex slave he is in big trouble. She was obviously traumatized, at some point this was non-consensual, this is apt to be a slam dunk for the Prosecution. She can't legally consent to Assault and Battery. There's a lot missing but I doubt a Judge or Jury will give this guy a pass even if it began as a BD/SM relationship. The Defendant will likely do a lot of time in prison.

I agree. and quite rightfully so..... as you said. even if she consented to being his slave--at some point things went south and she wanted out . But man, this story has some odd pieces to it.

It sounds as if there's a lot more to it to me as well. 8 days? 8 days she stayed? And didn't run up to the first cop she could find when she left the apartment? One thing that isn't difficult to find in NY is a cop, even if you are from out of town. Nope. Something definitely sounds wrong here. There seems to me a lot which isn't being said about it.

I can tell what's a LOT harder than finding a cop..... finding a job interview at a restaurant in NYC! All the damn actors, actresses, dancers, artists and musicians have them all! There's a post out there now, the Admins moved it to introductions.... that I swear, we'll see with this same headline or worse. I know the Admins are very good about letting people express themselves freely--but it's got me asking--at what point do we have a certain responsibility to say "this is not okay" to protect someone who doesn't know any better?

For example, according to AP the victim is reported to have briefly escaped and phoned her mother "saying she was going to kill herself because she couldn't bear to be locked up anymore." The Defendant had been arrested for Domestic Violence Assault in the past but was the beneficiary of dropped charges. There's probably even more to the story than that. If you think rectal bleeding and bruising don't count as obvious trauma, then the police finding her shaking in the fetal position probably wouldn't count to you either. "Hell, after a few orgasms, Im gonna be shaking too." Do you really think she was shaking from "a few orgasms" as opposed to shock from whatever act caused her to suffer rectal hemorrhaging?

Depending on how this gets prosecuted Hopkins might well be liable under the "Trafficking Victims Protection Act" which was enacted in 2000. Some of Glenn Marcus' conduct took place pre-2000 which helped him on Appeal.

FR One commonly hears "rape" and "cry rape" stories. Man rapes vulnerable woman, man should rightly be put away. Woman seduces vulnerable man but later cries rape, woman should be put away (but rarely is). In wiitwd it seems so much worse. Man enslaves vulnerable (even though apparently willing) woman and goes further than she intended, man gets put away (even though what might be morally right would be for man and woman to receive bdsm training). But well-meaning man enslaves willing (but dishonest) woman who subsequently decides to cry abuse and lies. Sheesh - the chances of the poor bloke being understood to be the victim have to be nil. It's a reminder that all doms/dommes swim in very dangerous waters.

Im curious too, because the one story I did find relating the rectal problems also states the victim "broke free" and went to call her mother.
