There are volumes that can be written on what makes someone a true master. To boil it down to a simple forum post can be a daunting task. And as with anything else there really isnt a one sized fits all approach to finding a true master of a step by step guide to become one. In an attempt to get to the crux of your question I could say, it takes time, experience, knowing ones-self and mastering ones-self. Because if you arent a Master of your own life how in the world can you master someone elses. And even the most experienced and self knowing can have a time of not knowing. It happens. But they will make decisions based off of lifes experiences to go the direction of what they hold as the best choice. I know strayed way off with my line of thought there.

to me, my slave is what makes me a true Master. it's the level of trust that she gives me in knowing that ultimately, i will take care of her.

You have to have a clipboard in plain sight and be drinking a cup of coffee while all around you are working hard. That is what it takes to be a true master. If anyone tells you it is about smoking cigars or puffing out your chest, regard them with suspicion. As near as I can tell, and judging by all I have seen, mastery is largely delusional and consist of successfully ignoring any of the ways you remain inept. That goes doubly for me. You can't master anyone who isn't buying into it. For that reason alone it amounts to an illusion. In practical terms if the enslaved one is similarly delusional, you can operate as if it's all real. Generically speaking, to master, command, control and own require a set of skills and a sort of contract. You have to know how to lead, be in charge and put at least one of your feet down convincingly, while whomever is at the receiving end of that bluster needs to respond appropriately, or else you're only the master of your own shadow. Slaves tend to have specific needs they hand you to own them with. Knowing about that, knowing what their personality is like, being able to form and shape the experience of the relationship as you will, takes at least one cold beer a day in the heat of summer. The other way to be a true master is to send in for the medallion. It comes with a certificate of authenticity you can shove in the face of any who dare doubt.

If you carry yourself proudly, are justly quietly proud of you achievements and aware of your short comings (yes we all have them), are honest and fair, you have come a long way to attract those who will see you as being worthy and from this you may find one who sees and wants you as her Master. All others can clap a bull's cunt over their bollicky heads and get fucked. their opinions matter not in the eyes of those who respect you.

Fundamentally, its about someone who has reached a place in which they are able to accept responsibility for their life to date, and for its future direction. Confidence, honesty, trustworthiness, integrity, ability to understand and empathise with others, the courage to accept life on its own terms, and to stand up for what you believe in, while also accepting that you are not the sole fount of alll wisdom; all bound up with just a little touch of humility. Along with the ability and desire to accept the responsibility of providing care and direction to someone else who needs and desires this. A little technical ability in the technology of bdsm is useful, although it can be acquired along the way if all else is right. And of course, not forgetting the icing on the cake - to have as partner someone who understands, respects and desires what you have to offer.

Even more so when you are in a Master/Mistress open marriage in a poly home.. Works both ways.

I really liked your postscript - thought I'd quote it for truth, at the font size it deserves.

A true master is the one I am with, not literally because I am single, but what I mean is that the person you submit to is the truest thing

I think I will put my two cents in here, which is quickly becoming worth 1/1000 th of a cent.

Many others have the truth of it and have stated it already in generic terms.  I will put it this way
I am a Master and I refer to myself in that context within the community. But here is the the important point, I am only a master to those I own, in my case my two slavegirls, donna and mary.  I meet their needs in the context that they recognize me as their right and true master.  Hopefully I meet most of the tests many others have mentioned but being human I am fairly sure (actually not fairly sure, certain) that I fail to live up to the paragon of being a "true" Master in some manner or at some times.  I dont really care if anyone else sees me in that light or not, it is simply not important.  What is important is my relationship with my property.  Note this has nothing to do with me being a good master or not, simply being a master is the result of wholly owning a slave who sees you in that light.  My own self respect and the respect of others that I respect requires that I be the best master I can be, it is my path to self enlightenment.
Being human and like most people I love to label things, so in my universe, Masters are owners who value their property and care for it properly.  For me to acknowledge them as the Masters of their home, they have to be decent examples of human beings, not perfect but working on it with the understanding they will never get there.  Note I say human rather than male, though it is more the norm, there are many female "Masters" no matter what they may call themselves.  I guess you could reduce it to this, a Master takes the ultimate responsibility for his or her family and they acknowledge it as such.

In my view,

Master = Dominant + experience + commitment

A true Master is not a perfect Master, as if it's ready to go, right out of the box.

There are good Masters out there with different levels of experience, but at least some experience is necessary.

The commitment I speak of is not about the commitment to the slave, but a commitment to becoming a better Master. The reason I say this is because people break up all the time. And with M/s there are things like manumission that can separate the relationship, there is no permanence in M/s. But, just as the slave is committed to a life of obedience, the Master must also be committed to a life of leadership. Both working toward excellence.

This is my opinion, nothing more, based on my own experience. First, a true Master must be good at what he does--he needs to have learned the ropes on his way up from being a "Dom". Nobody knows everything, we are all still learning, but even so he needs to be competent and somewhat experienced. He needs to understand what his responsibilities are and take them seriously. That is for the slave's benefit but for his own as well: if he doesn't do those things, he will become a joke and nobody wants that. And responsibilities vary from one person to the next, since everyone has their own style and desires.
In my own case, I see my responsibilities like this: I think it is my job to guide and teach my slave, to push and expand her limits, to keep her safe at all times while she is mine. I never send her into a situation I can't get her out of. I never order her to do something she is not capable of. When she is collared, I accept responsibility for her health, safety and even for her life--that is, after all, what a slave offers, her life in my hands. That's a serious thing. If I fail at any of those things, I am not doing my job. It doesn't come easy...in my case it took years until I felt I was qualified to say I was a Master.
There is a lot of psychology involved in D/s and we need to be aware of it at all times. We are dealing with deep-seated hopes, fears, desires, and often with emotional damage or someone who has been abused at some point. The more we know about psychology, I think, the better we are as Masters.
Arrogance, while not always a bad thing, does not make a person a Master--it makes them an asshole. Self-control is very important--how can you control a slave if you can't even control yourself? So I never punish girls in anger, ever. Taking out my anger is not the point or the reason for punishment. The point is to use discipline as a tool in order to help the slave become better at what she does, not to make myself feel better because I whipped them.
Just my own take on it, I'm sure everyone has their own opinions.
