Alpha and I are starting to talk about decorative cutting again.  Since I'm the health care worker, I volunteered to do most of the research.  I've already run a search here and come up with a lot of positive posts about cutting, but not a lot of technique.  He'll probably be using a scalpel, and the design will likely go on the back of my shoulder.  One problem we need to solve is how to make the cutting last.  I tend not to scar, so we're thinking of putting something in the cuts to make it scar up or mark, but not sure what to use that would be both safe and effective.  Also, is there any way for him to practice so he gets the technique down before trying it on me?  I've heard of nursing students using oranges for IV practice, and wonder if something similar would be helpful.  Any advice would be appreciated.

those I used to know in the bodmod circles who didn't scar well or wanted their cuttings to stand out usually used ash or ink or continuously cut in the same place, same pattern until they built up a layer of scar tissue.

Have you considered a combination of branding and cutting for multi-dimensional effect?

You don't want an orange.  You want something more like a peach.  The peel of the orange is too thick and isn't similar to cutting skin at all.  The skin of the peach is thin enough to be more like the skin of a person.  The same as practicing for needles.  You want to learn the difference in pressure between the skin and the fruit.

For scaring, I do use the multiple cut method.  I haven't worked with ash, so I'm not much help there.  You may not see the scar as well the first couple of times, but the more you retrace the design, it will stand out more.  Remember that cutting scar tissue is a bit tougher than cutting in a new spot.  You may not see it from across the room, but it's still there when going over work that's been done prior so a little more resistance will be there.

littlewonder, what kind of ash is used? Wood ash? if so, does the type of wood matter?

Sucker, I would be willing to take a brand, but Alpha isn't comfortable with burning me yet. He'd much rather do a cutting.

LP, thanks for the advice on the peach. This is something that Alpha and I both want very much, but he's nervous about cutting me too deeply. He'll feel much better if he's able to get the feel of the scalpel first.

the people I used to know who would use ash always used cigarette or cigar ashes.

I haven't read the other responses so.. forgive me now...  :)

I do a lot of cutting and get cut -- to stick (more in a bit).  I also have taught a lot of cutting in the past.

For me, the cutting, when first cut doesn't really stay... but there are several things you can do... irritate it -- rub off the scab every day in the shower, rub salt and/or ash and or lemon juice in it when you're cut... you can also do what I have in my cutting which is tattoo ink that I boiled down to make it concentrated.. and its rubbed in after I am cut.

In terms of the scaring (getting it to stick), it really depends on your skin.. etc... good luck.. write me on the other side if I can help

oh.. ETA ... raw chicken boobs and double strength jello (make jello with half as much water) and ripe mango
