A switch is a person who can access their dominant and submissive traits. Think of a person who can either Top or bottom depending upon their mood.
Example: I am dominant almost all the time but maybe twice a year I get the itch to play sub. My sub who is also a switch (and was a Master/Dom before he came to me) Tops me in play scenes.

Depending upon which end of the whip your on your *responsibilities* can vary.

A switch is simply someone that enjoys being both top and bottom.  In most cases they are simply into the bedroom side of D/s and can switch roles with the same partner.  In my case I'm more of what's framed as an alpha submissive.  I do not "switch" roles with the same partner.  It is a status with me and I can be dominant or submissive depending on the person.  My ideal situation would be owning a slave of my own and having a Master who controlled us both.  That to me would be heaven.

There are different types of switches, some are SM switches, some are Ds switches, some are Ms switches, some are a combo of those.  Some switch depending on the relationship and some switch within the same relationship.

The job is the same as everyones- be true to yourself and communicate openly.  Stick to the commitments that you make.

For me, I am more Alpha most of the time, yet find pleasure in giving those reigns over to another often. I am Master to one and i bottom for another switch (once my sub try taking the dominant role to fill my more subby needs and that ended in an hour of giggles).

Does that mean that a switch can receive the whipping as well as giving.

Depends on the switch, what type they are and what type of relationship they choose to get into.

I think it has a lot to do with the type/ degree/ intensity of BDSM relationship the people have. The person I would find it most difficult to switch with is my husband. I just get into Domme space and he goes "nope, thats it, ok..." and its all over. Even when I am topping him, he is still the Dominant. I can't ever really have the control over him that I can exert as a Domme otherwise.   What I wouldn't give to just once...... LOL!!!

But I am absolutely Domme to the rest of the world, and have my own subbies and regularly Domme at clubs and events. Submitting for me is a struggle- it really is a gift I give my husband and Master. To see the happiness when I behave as he wishes or when our scene goes well gives me an extraordinary joy I do not ever feel otherwise. My submission is about the gift of submission to him. I don't know how to explain it... But, I wouldn't submit to anyone else- the only time we even come close is if someone else he chooses joins in our scene.

I started in the lifestyle as a subbie and quite dramatically declared I could never be a Domme. Being a Domme and having all that responsibility, after really having been hurt physically and emotionally as a subbie, scared me and I pushed it as far away from my mind as I could. I wanted to explore my feelings and the sensuality of BDSM, and I found a wonderful Master. I thought the search was over.... but being involved in BDSM with other people led me to being the one holding the whip after years of being terrified even of the crack of one. Fortunately, before meeting my Master and husband I was a subbie in a club and with people where I saw very, very good Dominants/ tops (as well as some crappie ones to use as comparisons) and learned a lot.

Well put.  I think that deep down inside, there's something of a switch in many, if not most of the people who actually practice BDSM (as opposed to those who just dream about it and pontificate online.)  At Desert Dominion, I think we have more switches than pure (sorry about that, hate that word) dominants and submissives combined.

There are an infinite number of degrees, from Dominants who feel the need to bottom once a year or so, to slaves who like to top every now and then.  All the colors of the rainbow.

As I said in another post somewhere, BDSM people are like snowflakes, each completely and beautifully unique.

What are your responsibilities

"can i ask a question?" - May I point out that by asking that, you did indeed just ask a question.

A switch is that little lever on the wall that turns your light on and off.

What are my responsibilities?  Whatever I have agreed that they will be.

Best,

LaMalinche

I have the responsibilities assigned to me as a slave, and the responsibilities I assign to myself as a dominant.  It's a lot of work, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Is not everything in life worth doing, "a lot of work"?. . . and worth doing well?

My mother has often said, When you choose an action, you choose the consequences of that action. She has emphasized the corollary of this axiom even more vehemently: When you desire a consequence, you had damned well better take the action that will create it.

Food for thought and my two cents are added to the count.

Be yourself.  If someone doesn't like you, screw 'em.  They got the same clothes to get glad in they got mad in.  Beyond that, everything else is small and you just shouldn't sweat the small stuff...

You make a great point...I have been pondering this for some time now.  Years ago, my mentor provided me training as a Domme in order to get a better understanding...i thought it a waste of time back then...  Recently i have come to the realization that with the right person, in the right relationship...hell yes i could.  But like you said, it would be a struggle...but that's what would make it special...unique...not something you would be capable of committing to for just anyone.
