Does wearing those nose an mouth face masks you see signs telling you in hospitals to cover your face with if sick, do they really do anything to stop the cold ,or viral or bacterial creeping crud you got from passing to others an infecting or possibly infecting them?

A post on a rant group, an the fact that the nurse who takes your temp an leads you into dr's waiting exam room WILL make you put one on if you're running a fever even if you are not now coughing or sneezing, just running a fever, made me ask.

they're only good for about 5- 10 minutes , less if they're wet from sneezing. but yes they offer protection to you and others. the fact you had a fever means some kind of infection. your body's immune system might not be able to handle the nastie nastie buggies found in hospitals. we get a lot of people with nosocomial infections which mean it was aquired from a hospital or hospital style setting.
hand washing is the best way to prevent picking up germs.

The other reason is that the people in a hospital or a doctor's waiting room are already ill and therefore their immune system is weaker than normal. So even if a well person wouldn't pick anything up, someone with bronchitis, for example, can pick up another bug which will then weaken them to the point it turns into pneumonia.

This is especially true of babies, the elderly, those on chemo, or who have recently been, or anyone with an autoimmune disease. And you can't tell by looking at someone if they finished chemo two weeks ago or have lupus.

to second whats been said.... the facemasks at healthcare facilities are for droplets. They prevent (well, let's say, minimize) the risk of spreading colds and other bugs from droplets--meaning, when you cough or sneeze, rather than the droplets spreading out to everyone else around you in the waiting room, they are primarily contained in your mask.

They do not provide adequate respiratory protection from airborne bugs (those which you can't see) but are fairly effective in reducing droplets, which, to a certain degree, you can. They won't stop your cold--if they've got you masked up because you are symptomatic, well, it's too late for you.....not too late to reduce the risk to everyone else around you who isn't. Healthcare providers and those caring for sick folks will often wear them as well so that if while examining a patient--and the patient coughs or sneezes, it can offer some limited protection from droplets entering into our systems.

the doctor's offices are simply following the infection control guidance of the CDC. they can rant all they want, it won't change anything. But the ranter is welcome to spend a day in a health clinic, and I'll be happy to let unmasked patients sneeze and cough all over them, and we'll see how quickly they grab a facemask.

I work in a clinic with kids on chemo. I have a sinus infection and ear infection so today when I walked thru the clinic to pick up paperwork I used one of those masks. More for the kids than me, and it makes mom and dad's feel better when they hear how much like a croaked frog I sound like

I think they help control it to a certain extent. I know I am happy when people use them because it tells me to give that person a lot of room when I go bye.
