I don't have cable, but I'm glad to know I'm keeping up with them :-)

I have cable, and I am switching back and forth between a couple of channels and you seem to be as well informed as we are!

Welcome to the boards MissAnnaRose.

Maybe you think I said something I didn't.

3 people died when a reactor went prompt critical and blew up.

A reactor going critical is when it is generating a SELF SUSTAINING reaction. I posted the complete story of the accident in which three men died. The reactor did not go critical, it failed to cool down and resulted in a steam explosion and a core meltdown. Reactors can not go super critical and explode, they meltdown and generate a steam explosion, which is something entirely different.

You might also want to make it known it was an experimental design, and when the control rod was pulled too far out, the core overheated and melted down.

There have been 13 incidents involving American reactors, that are listed. Two, the Explosion at SL-1, National Reactor Testing Station, and three mile island resulted in radioactive material being released into the environment. Only one accident resulted in deaths.

The reactor went critical when the control rod was pulled out too far. That sudden massive release of energy is what caused the explosion.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SL-1

Prompt critical means a rapidly increasing nuclear reaction. The reason the reaction stopped at SL-1 was because the fuel melted and could no longer maintain the reaction.

Other considerations;

http://noir.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=a9ik3zMtmSdk

"March 15 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp., the world’s largest carmaker, may lose output of at least 40,000 vehicles after Japan’s strongest earthquake damaged factories and crippled nuclear power plants, causing electricity shortages. Toyota closed 12 plants in the nation through tomorrow, Shiori Hashimoto, a spokeswoman for the company, said by phone yesterday. The manufacturer’s profit will be cut by 6 billion yen ($72 million) for each day of lost operations in Japan, while Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. may each lose 2 billion yen a day, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. estimated"

...and Chernobyl went hypercritical when the control rods were put back in. The control rods at Chernobyl were tipped with graphite, a neutron moderator (a neutron moderator actually accelerates a nuclear reaction, like light water or heavy water; it turns fast neutrons into thermal neutrons more likely to split an atom) so when the core went (within seconds!) from zero to sixty and they inserted the graphite-tipped control rods to stop it, the graphite made the situation worse, instantaneously!, causing the explosion that spewed radioactive uranium and plutonium all over.

In addition to which, the graphite burst into flames and burned explosively, contributing to  - if not actually causing - the widespread fires that damaged the building so badly and allowed so much radioactive debris to escape. Sort of akin to filling fire extinguishers with gasoline. One of those, "what the fuck were they thinking?" moments.

Yes, exactly!

By the way, welcome! Your posts are fantastic. Please hang around here and talk science on a regular basis. Like....mmm... every 10 minutes or so, maybe?

Good posts, Rose.

Have a source? I can't find anything related except what's been labeled as a hoax and explanations that during meltdown Cs-137 and I-131 occur within primary containment which supposedly leaks 1% of contained gasses a day into containment 2, until normal conditions.

http://news.google.com/news/search?aq=f&pz=1&cf=all&ned=us&hl=en&q=caesium

Cs-137 and I-131 are fission products and occur during normal operation of any uranium fueled fission reactor. The caesium had to come out of the fuel rods.

Thanks for telling me things I have already posted.

There is the Panda Man!!!
I thought you might need a formal invitation to show up.

Very nice to read the conversation between you and Miss Rose.

You are so smart, you BOTH are gifted with a lot of gray matter.

I am sittimg here looking at the explosion at reactor # 3, this new blast at the nuclear power plant is incredible.

I certainly question how much of the truth is coming out.

I wonder what the "story" will be by the end of the week.

As Anderson Cooper just said, "There is just one thing after another coming out here."

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

Peace

Edwynn -> RE: Living in a nuclear world? Nuclear Plant Explosions in Japan (3/14/2011 10:18:19 PM)

It will be the same old story.

"We need to make deep water drilling and nuclear power safer."

Nothing about "we need to put more focus on conservation and increased efficiency."

I'm yawning already in anticipation.

As I posted early on in this thread, the Japanese nuclear industry have a long and terrible record when it comes to truth and transparency - and on some occasions the Japanese government colluded with them too (to keep the truth hidden from their public/rest of the world) ...

... I wouldn't trust them further than I could spit a rat. And, again, we haven't heard the half of it yet ... some of the "events", and their subsequent reactions to them, don't make a lot of sense if they're telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

My advice is to go long on tinned tuna ;)

I don't know much about radiation exposure but this sounds pretty ridiculous:

Japan faces radiation catastrophe threat

Prime Minister Naoto Kan urged people within 30 km (18 miles) of the facility -- a population of 140,000 -- to remain indoors amid the world's most serious nuclear accident since the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986.

It is a pretty good safety measure. Radioactive material does a lot more damage if it gets inside a person than if you're just near them.

Know your enemy.

Particulates, son, Particulates.

I ain't on no wireless laptop, under the spreading chestnut tree; daddio!!!!

mnottertail -> RE: Living in a nuclear world? Nuclear Plant Explosions in Japan (3/15/2011 9:39:20 AM)

So, we got 35K or so troops stationed in Japan, I know we got some naval observation going on, but what say we take at least 15k or more of those troops (even if a Brigadier hasta get on a shovel handle) and replace that many japanese troops in the quake areas, let them go do business in the reactor areas, and while we are at it, dump off a bunch or our NBC suits to them, from here there and Iraq (since it turns out we didnt need them) and while we are at it, tell the french to go ahead and make the nofly zone in Libya, and dump off our arms and materiel to the french and british on our way out the door of IRAQ and home NOW!!!!!! and tell them to let the Libyan insurgents have em. Or would that be against the principles of freedom held by islamaphobic americans to arm muslims?

Any better ideas than to clean up this shit all in one fell swoop?

Edwynn -> RE: Living in a nuclear world? Nuclear Plant Explosions in Japan (3/15/2011 10:08:13 AM)

You for got to mention relocating the Peter King hearings to Tripoli, but I can understand the oversight. Such a long list.

And don't forget sending  Rumsfeldt and Cheyney to the "The Enemy Is Your Cash Cow" symposium in Baghdad.
