Has anyone had one ovary removed ?

It's no secret i have severe endometriosis. i've already had two surguries to remove scar tissue and cysts. This last year i've had a lot of trouble with my left ovary, trying to clone itself in cyst-form. Stupid stupid egg sack. Its looking like its going to have to be removed, as this one ovary can't get its act together.

i'm curious as to what recovery is like.

Here's a link to what Endometriosis is. Figured i should do my part since March is Endo Awareness Month. meh.

http://endometriosis.org/endometriosis/

Lots of women have this disorder, believed to be a secundary auto-immune disorder. A secundary auto-immune disorder is when your immune system doesn't reckonize a foreign body ( uterine cells in this case ) and so the immune system does not attack it.

Long story short, cells escape the uterus and attach themselves to other parts of your insides. Every month these cells respond to a woman's release of hormoans, and the get bigger and cause you to bleed. Since these cells cannot shed themselves as the cells inside the uterus, the lining they cast off stays inside you, basically filling your insides with spider webs of scar tissue. As time goes on, these "webs" start glueing your insides together, chaining your guts and bladder and other such into a nasty tangle of misery. Somehow this also causes your body to make too much estrogen. So imagine a non pregnant woman with as much estrogen as a pregnant woman, all the friggin' time. And you can get cysts and fibroids and huge blood clots, and well, it just sucks.

Many women can have this disorder without symptoms. They're the lucky ones. Girls can start having problems with Endo as early as menarch, which normally comes early for them. Preteen girls can expirience pain as severe as child labor, every month. Periods can leave females with Endo bed ridden for days.

If anyone has any other questions about Endometriosis, feel free to Cmail me.

Sorry I don't have much to offer. I'm not a doctor and I know even less about female plumbing. However you might consider something - have them extract and freeze some eggs now. I don't know if you have kids, but if you don't you might want them in the future. Seems to me while they're in there it would not be as involved as to do so at the time.

Best of luck.

Thank you for the thought.
i would still have one working ovary, so there's no need to freeze eggs. i do want children, but the endo' has left that a near impossibility.

I had my right ovary removed in Sept. 2009 (football sized tumor attached and surrounded the ovary).. I will share what happened to me.. all people are different but when I asked my doctor about it later it was said to be normal.. I had hot flashes and night sweats for a few months.. not real intense but they were noticeable.. my house mates and I fought over the air conditioning LOL.. pretty much it was like a mild menopause.. I still kept my schedule on menstruating.. as I had problems with irregular periods in the past I was hoping for that one thing to stay the same and it did.. I unfortunately had the misfortune of having stupid nurses on the floor I was on after my surgery and they never checked the bandage while I was there or told me how to care for it so it got a sterile infection and combine that with a hysterectomy type scar (belly button to pelvic area) I was laid up for about 2 months but as my tumor was HUGE I had to have it removed with that type of incision.. they tried to take it out lyperscopicly(sp?) but it was too big to do so.. I was in the hospital for 3 days and got to sit and watch tv and sleep for at least a week before I even thought about getting up and doing anything.. sounds like yours isn't that bad and if they can remove it with a small incision I am sure they will and that has a far easier recoup period than what I had done. Would be a good idea in my opinion to have some night gowns or flowy dresses that don't have a waist line or anything that would hold on to your belly.. I had to wear kimonos for about 2 months because I wouldn't even think of touching pants until it was healed lol.. I don't know if any of this helps or not and feel free to cmail me if you have any questions I haven't answered.. I tried to include everything but you never know and if you just want support I have been there and I know what you are going through at least if you have it removed as far as I know I don't have any conditions in that area.. *knocks on wood* lol

Edited to add for clarification purposes.. the 'mild menopause symptoms' did go away with time as my other ovary took over and started to produce more estrogen or my body got used to less which ever way it goes :-)

Oh Dear, I'm sorry I cannot share any such experience.
That is a lot of complication to have to go through as such a young lady. Considering removing the second ovary at your age, would have me very unsettled.
I hope everything goes smoothly, and without complications for you. M

Yes, even with the endo, my right ovary has faired pretty well and there is no need to remove it. i'm very happy about that, as menopaus is not something i'm looking forward to.

Thank yous for the posts .

i lost my left ovary when they did my final endo surgery, all the doctor would say was it was the worst case he'd seen and the ovary was destroyed so he removed it as well. there were some mild symptoms after the surgery, very mild hot flashes and such, but it didn't last long, my doctor said my body would adjust and it did so nicely in my opinion. 11 yrs later at 47 i'm starting with the real menopausal symptoms, sweats, flashes, all the fun stuff. my life has been pretty normal since the surgery, i didn't need to go to bed and cry for days once a month. i wish they would have done it sooner!

Yeah and I have heard you can take birthcontrol for the first month after surgery to stop the hormone plummet and you won't have to go through the drop in hormones as long as you don't already use them that is :-)

Yes, I have. Put up with pain for three years due to a cyst and finally got it through my head to remove it, and wish I had done it earlier.

It was too big to remove via arthroscopic surgery, so my surgeon used an old c-section scar to go through. Spent one night in the hospital afterwards with a morphine drip, then home the next day. First few days sucked, I'll be honest (and I'm fairly pain resistant) but were manageable with painkillers and someone to help gently help me move out of bed/sofa/to bathroom/etc. I felt more normal after about 3 weeks...completely back in business after about 6 weeks.

Absolutely no side effects since then, barring no more pain on that side, thank goodness.

The first few days sucked which is why I am glad I had a hysterectomy type incision since they made me stay in the hospital longer.. it was nice having a nurse help me to and from the bathroom.. since I was staying in a shelter at the time of my surgery I didn't have the comodity of having help getting up and doing things.. Thank God for painkillers and for my bedroom being right across the hall from the bathroom lol I wasn't allowed to go up and down stairs or lift anything heavier than a half gallon of milk for about 2 months.. Most people don't get the incision I did even for hysterectomies anymore.. it takes awhile to recoup from it.

Thank you everyone for sharing what you went through. It's helping me out a lot.

i think the hardest thing for me will be having to stay in the hospital. i have a huge phobia of IVs. Getting a shot is okay, being pierced and tattoo'd is great, its just those tubes attaching your body to something machine like freaks the fritz out of me.

The last surgury i had ( to removed some scar tissue, misplaced implanted uterine cells, and some uterine legaments, ) i was lied to, again. They always lie to me about how soon they will take the IVs out. i asked the nurses if they'd take the IVs out as soon as i was "awake" and they agreed to take the tubes away once i'd gone to the bathroom to prove i had control over my body. i woke up and politely insisted that i go to the bathroom at once. i did, but they didn't take the tubes out. They did, however put a strong sedative in the IV. It made me go to sleep so i didn't freak out about the IVs. They were really nice nurses, even if they did lie.

i have a huge phobia of IVs.

You and me both! It's pretty much the only thing over which I have a difficult time handling fear. SO, I did a couple of things....I took a self-hypnosis course (it was fairly effective and offered some strategies for fear self-control).

Barring that, TELL the people who are inserting the IVs (and the anesthesiologist who will most likely see you before the surgery that day) that you are needle-phobic. They can wrap you up in some warm blankets to help relax you and they may be able to offer you a sedative before any needles. And TELL the post-OR head nurse (ask to speak to her/him) that you need to be told the truth afterwards. You need to wrap your head around the idea that if you are going to be staying a day or more in the hospital after surgery that they may require you to keep the IV in.

Helping them find a spot on your hand/arm where it might be less sensitive can help, as well as asking for it to be taped down very well (so that you don't feel tubes move against your body) and wrapped in gauze so you don't have to see it there. (if the visual part freaks you out)

All of these are things hospital staff know how to help with, but it's up to you to communicate how sensitive you are to IVs, and that you want them to work with you. Best to you!

I had my right ovary removed due to recurrent cysts. I sufferred through a year of pain trying various medical treatments first, some of which worked, some of which caused bad side effects. I begged my GYN to remove it after a year.

It was a day surgery procedure and I was back at work a week later. The recovery was easy, much less painful than the constantly growing and bursting cysts.

I got whats been called a penis, and that describes it almost exactly, so I am thinking for me it is congenital, and I wished somebody woulda told me, I wouldn't have beat it so hard.
