Now Moon,

Surely you don't believe that I ever referred to Lucy as a dumb fat ass cunt, or she referenced us as morons.

Like the reasoned right so often sounding the tocsin, I am just out here pointing out the hypocrisy of the position, and them what hold it.

No hypocrisy.

It depends on how well acquainted a particular individual may be with our internal political dynamics and social culture, and whether or not they then assume that they are "more better" than the citizens of the US to make decisions and judgments about the internal structure and beliefs of this country.

When someone with little or no personal experience, and little or no understanding of things "American" claims the right to pass judgment and tell us "what we really mean" or "what you bastards should do", and they base it on ignorance rather than knowledge ... then yes, I'll call them on it.

Just as I will when an ignorant or ideologically blind American claims the same rights.

I reserve the right to question a non-American's basis of knowledge and understanding before I give weight to their opinion.

Unlike some, I really don't genuflect to my "Euro-superiors", whose ancient culture, deep grasp of how the world really work, unbridled history of peace and unselfishness helpfulness to humanity allows them to take a condescending attitude about our "quaint" American ideas and start to preach to me.

I do respect and listen to anyone who has a clue, understands that "their country" isn't the US (and the US isn't "their country", but can ask good questions, and give keen insights into a particular American situation based on a viewpoint that includes a different history and culture.

Arpig, for example.  Northgent as well.  Lucy, sometimes.

I do question Moonhead's ability to meet the same standard (for example).

I have asked him why he thinks he has sufficient insight to prognosticate, judge and advise on all things American. But all I get is a "I'm holier-than-thou" or "I ain't gonna tell ya", so his opinion on "things American" carries little weight with me.

So why can't they involve theirselves in our politics and convey as a people their political takes and thoughts on America?

For the same reasons I don't need the neighbors telling me not to beat my wife, Ron. I might have a lot of mutual interests with them, and be perfectly happy to talk with them outside, and even work with them on a project that benefits us all, but what goes on in my house really ain't their fucking business, now is it?

And there is the problem Rich. Like it or not, the US is a global player. The rest of the world has this much interest in what you are doing, because it does concern us, often even strongly.

Fine. Shut up about the middle east and Europe, then.

Sorry,

I've personal experience, training and education in both areas, plus in the international system, as well in military strategy, tactics and political implications.

Not that that will make me "right" about my opinions.  I don't pretend to be the one and only expert on everything.  However, if I talk about an issue, it at least has a basis in understanding the culture and history.

All I've every asked you - when you prognosticate and pontificate on a purely American issue - is "On what basis do you make these claims of greater knowledge and insight?".  Your only response seems to basically be STFU.

Greater insight than whom? I don't recall making any such claim.
(And my knowledge of your country relates to career stuff, which I have no intention of discussing in here.)

Was that irony? If not, er, yes it is other people's business if you're beating your wife.

This is always trotted out. Maybe in Germany, wouldn't know about that, but I don't know anyone outside of these boards who is remotely interested in US politics, or British politics come to think about it.

The idea that we're all runnning round reading The Economist and some book about US relations with the international community while trying to work out the ins and outs of US border control and foreign policy, doesn't ring true from where I'm standing. Perhaps the point is proven by your rock concerts and the like for Obama, whereas when he came here some old fella went to see him to try and lend ten bob off him, and when Bush came he came to a village near me and everyone was mightily pissed off that the roads were blocked and no one could get to the shop for a pint of milk.

What I have noticed, though, is this: whenever you see Americans being interviewed in an English television studio, not politicians but Americans who live here, admittedly they're slightly anglicised as this is their home these days; there seems to be a warmth and an understanding that we don't really get with people from other countries. I don't think it's a common language, more that the middle and upper classes seem to share certain ways of carrying themselves and, ultimately, hold similar aspirations, which I suppose you'd expect as the English and Americans stand at on one side of political philosophy and the continental Europeans on another.

I'm probably making Firmhand's point that we don't know a great deal about the US at all, but, in my view, from what I've read on these boards, I know more about certain US colonial ventures than many posting in the political section of these boards.

Any time you post and tell an American what is right or wrong about some American political aspect, you are making a claim of greater knowledge or insight.

Do I really have to say any more?

A couple of points NG (and sorry for the misspelling of your screen name).

First, I specifically excluded you from one of the non-Americans who opinion holds no worth.   While we often disagree, I value your input and respect your thinking.

Second, I know that you have specifically discussed your level of understanding of American internal politics versus your level of understanding of your own national politics, and you were honest and forthright about your level of knowledge and why you say the things you do.

Because of these things, and the fact that you post with your own limitations in mind on the subject, I've never had the desire to even challenge your "right" to criticize or discuss American politics.

Firm
