Fox News' Lies Keep Them Out of Canada
By Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Reader Supported News

01 March 11

As America's middle class battles for its survival on the Wisconsin barricades - against various Koch Oil surrogates and the corporate toadies at Fox News - fans of enlightenment, democracy and justice can take comfort from a significant victory north of the Wisconsin border. Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canadian regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada's right-wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.

Canada's Radio Act requires that "a licenser may not broadcast ... any false or misleading news." The provision has kept Fox News and right-wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage, including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the "Fairness Doctrine" in 1987. Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the US airwaves. When Stephen Harper moved to abolish the anti-lying provision of the Radio Act, Canadians rose up to oppose him fearing that their tradition of honest non-partisan news would be replaced by the toxic, overtly partisan, biased and dishonest news coverage familiar to American citizens who listen to Fox News and talk radio. Harper's proposal was timed to facilitate the launch of a new right-wing network, "Sun TV News" which Canadians call "Fox News North."

Harper, often referred to as "George W. Bush's Mini Me," is known for having mounted a Bush-like war on government scientists, data collectors, transparency, and enlightenment in general. He is a wizard of all the familiar tools of demagoguery; false patriotism, bigotry, fear, selfishness and belligerent religiosity.

Harper's attempts to make lying legal on Canadian television are a stark admission that right-wing political ideology can only dominate national debate through dishonest propaganda. Since corporate profit-taking is not an attractive vessel for populism, a political party or broadcast network that makes itself the tool of corporate and financial elites must lie to make its agenda popular with the public. In the Unites States, Fox News and talk radio, the sock puppets of billionaires and corporate robber barons, have become the masters of propaganda and distortion on the public airwaves. Fox News' notoriously biased and dishonest coverage of the Wisconsin's protests is a prime example of the brand of news coverage Canada has smartly avoided.

The conservatives think that telling outright lies is acceptable. Thus, the Canadian move is censorship.

Lucylastic -> RE: Faux News, Anyone? (4/4/2011 1:47:47 PM)

Hlen, we had this topic a few weeks ago, and JLF is right, according to certain twits canadians are living under a nanny government, being told what to do every minute of every day
But at least we wont be lied to by fox or any other  bullshit organization

I used to be a journalist and while I'd protect a confidential source at the cost of my own freedom, I would never print anything that I couldn't back up with sources from which others could confirm my stories.  Confidential sources are valuable in finding stories, but before anyone publishes a story, he or she should be able to stand up in front of others and prove what has been said.

This is just a preemptive statement from anyone who wants to take the "the government has no business sticking their noses in the news business."  If it can't be confirmed with multiple stories, it's a lie; not a story.

Unfortunately too many these days dont have your respect for their job or their readers/viewers.
Very sad but very true

FR

Well ain't that grand. A company wants to move out of the US, but can't manipulate the law in another country enough to suit itself. What that means now is that a foriegn government is now doing more to keep jobs in this country than our own government.

I hope y'all don't mind that I find this amusing. I'm funny that way.

Aylee -> RE: Faux News, Anyone? (4/4/2011 6:09:56 PM)

I know that you can watch Fox in Toronto and Ottawa.

Fox News' charter, established at the outset was to 'focus on American politics'. Why would Fox News even be valuable to Canadians?

slvemike4u -> RE: Faux News, Anyone? (4/4/2011 6:36:54 PM)

"Focus on American Politics"...lol....should be "Distorting American Politics" [:D]

We only get the news news sections, if you want fox with beck or hanitty or any of the others you need more than the  basic cable package. at least in Toronto
They dont want to bring us american news they want to be able to mislead people.
I listen/watch to the BBC, CNN, and  CBC I like a mix of news n info, Im guessing cos we also  have friends and family in the US?
I know thats why I watch
I dont find fox news to be valuable at all:)

"But hopefully ethics don't. "

Huh ? Let's have a quick review. In the US "somebody" took a case all the way to the supreme court to make it rule that the media can legally lie, and is actually indemnified from any tort prosecution for the possible consequences of actions of those who may have believed the lie.

Now a major "news" outlet in the US wants to move to another country but won't because they can't influence the law similarly there.

Ethics ? I gave up on ethics because I haven't seen any fucking ethics out of anyone else in at least a decade. I don't think they know what the word means.

Well, I might at times be an arrogant prick, but I do my best to behave in an ethical manner. I have to sleep at night. I have a very good friend to whom I take any qualms I might have before I do something I think of as questionable. And this might be surprising to some, but she is a church-going member of the Republican Women of America.

"Robert F. Kennedy Jr" - theres an unbiased source...  [sm=lol.gif]

This is why I refer to you (the people in this thread posting this crap) as leftists. Canada has an Orwellian Ministry Of Truth and you applaud it because it censors news in your favor. True Liberals would never applaud such governmental truthspeak enforcers of any kind.

Your ideology is so bankrupt... and pathetic.

Moonhead -> RE: Faux News, Anyone? (4/5/2011 4:49:05 AM)

You do wonder why the Hell Faux would want to move to Canada in the first place: surely they don't want to pay more taxes to fund the local socialised medicine and other such evil commie schemes Canada is notorious for?

DomKen -> RE: Faux News, Anyone? (4/5/2011 5:39:07 AM)

Pretty sure the plan was to team up with the neo con scum up there and destroy all those things.

Sanity -> RE: Faux News, Anyone? (4/5/2011 6:03:36 AM)

Those things destroy themselves, as socialism is a cancer. You cant tax the rich when "there are no rich no more" as the song says.

When the system goes bankrupt supporting all the freeloaders and government fat cats people will have to assume responsibility for their own welfare, and of course they wont have the slightest clue how to do so, which as Europe has shown us the longer the dark day of reckoning is put off the uglier it is when it comes.

And it will come, FOX NEWS or no.

Socialism is a cancer....proof of concept?
The song may have been sung, but the rich (as the poor) are always with us.
Europe doesn't appear to be headed for the dark ages yet, in fact, I think our old America is in tougher shape by far, does that make capitalism a cancer?
