It looks like we will have a $5 a gallon gas sighting soon, I will keep us posted.

Gas inches near $5 a gallon in Chicago

It looks like a real reality that we will soon break the all time record high gas prices soon.

I am still wondering if gas will be at or near $5 a gallon nationally near Memorial Day.

Now, is not the time to cut back funding on creating alternative renewable energy sources.

Bottom line is this folks.

Petroleum is a FINITE resource. We will NOT run out this year or in a decade or in 3 decades. but, some day, the human race WILL run out. What then?
???????!!!!!
There are too many cool things we do with petroleum that do NOT include burning it for fuel.

This is true to the point that civilization would utterly collapse without petroleum. Why, then, are we still burning the stuff? Because there are BILLIONS to be made from said burning, that's why.

The people who are making said billions will be dead and gone before the shit hits the fan so they dont give a shit and they are spending Millions to convince a bunch of loud but feeble minded folks that changing our energy supplies just isn't possible.

It is not only possible, it is necessary for the continuance of the human race into the next century. I wont be here but My progeny will and I, for one, would like to see this species last a looong damn time.

Environmentalists say "We're killing the earth". Sorry guys, we are NOT killing the earth. This old planet has been here for about 4.6 billion years and it has about 4 billion more until the sun goes red giant and toasts it.

What we ARE doing is killing our species.

Some Right wing folks on here have been quoted as hoping for the Singularity. I am too. For you folks that dont know what that is, it is the melding of human mind and machine to make us independent of biological bodies. The problem is that we have to last that long and at the rate we are going, what is left of the human race a century from now will look a lot more like Afghan tribesmen than HAL9000

Great post!
Almost every post on here, turns into stupid partisan bullshit chatter over who is right and who is to blame.
What are we going to do about our dependence on this finite resource?
Of course it is possible to end our dependence on oil, but how and when?

We dont have much choice but to quit using so damn much of it for fuel and save it for petrochemicals and manufacturing. The only way to do that is alternative energy sources.

Modern civilization cannot exist without large quantities of energy. We must, therefore, utilize and develop renewable sources.

lol, actually I plan to do more walking this summer, when I can.
But I will be damned if I am going to ride a bike from VA to MD and back again, in rush hour
traffic to get to work.
Many of us, don't have good alternative forms of transportation.

Many people don't live or work near good public transportation, and if they can't drive to work, carpool or catch a ride, they would not have a job.
Great time to be out of work these days, aint it?

There are many people suffering hardships because of the cost of gas.
I heard a story about a woman that drove about 4 hours a day{roundtrip} to get to work, it took her a long time to get this fairly good job with benefits she really needed for her family.
It is getting to the point, she almost can't afford the gas to get to work, and drives from PA to MD to work.
Public transportation is not available, and it probably would take her 5 hours to get to work {if buses were available}.
Many, many people in the United States live in area's that don't have adequate public transportation.
What options are people going to have that have to drive, and won't be able to afford to buy gas to get to work?

I agree that he is, but only because the Republican Party has been taken hostage by hypocritical buffoons, and idiots. If most in the Republican Party were informed, and sane, Obama wouldn't have a chance. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036697/#42541227

Gas inches near $5 a gallon in Chicago
Without regulation of how much speculators can buy futures on oil, and hold the US people hostage, Gas will reach $5.00. However, it will not be because demand has increased 30-40% in the world, in the last 6 months. The only commentators at CNBC who think oil will go higher, after Goldman Sacks people said "oil price is at least $10 inflated to the top, due to speculation, are the people who own oil futures (though they don't own airlines, or anything requiring massive amounts of oil now/in the future). Anyone who does not own oil futures, said oil is going down... Especially given Japan's misfortune of recent weeks.

The economy is recovering nicely, but I'm willing to bet it will take several steps backward, if Gas prices remain where they are, which will not be good for the president. Obama isn't responsible for what's going on, but many people won't care about that. M

Too true, too true. There needs to be an integrated public transport policy in this country, but you know as well as I do what happens whenever the suggestion of such a thing is made.

Buses, undergrounds and trains ARE progress - it's terrifying that politicians have somehow convinced so many Americans that the car was the one and only solution to transport... The car industry has made Americans slaves to their products and slaves to petrol.

What's new?

I know this is hard for some to hear, but the only way that any dent can be made in dependence on oil, environmental damage, the negative trade balance, the national debt, and more, is by ...

Higher gas prices.

Which in the case of the US means prices reflecting actual total costs to both the environment that are not fully paid by either the sellers or buyers ("external costs") and the lost revenue that could otherwise go to funding services that otherwise have to be obtained in a manner more harmful to both society and the overall economy. The chickens have quite noisily come home to roost on that score here lately.

For beginners, here's what people in the US have yet to catch up on in terms of what all the other modern developed economies do, starting with price at the pump, this taken from a site of a UK group:

The group is complaining about the UK prices being too high, and they are probably right, it being that the UK and the US are more adept than the typical EU country in siphoning of national wealth to the few.

But now that that's done, notice that individual country pump prices have nothing proportionately to do with barrel price of oil but rather how different countries partake of that income and how it is directed thence. You have to read about all the other ways those countries conduct their business to understand why/how they tax petrol as they do. Sorry to make it complicated, but they recognize the overall implications of energy usage better than some, and so oil itself is not treated as quite the 'separate issue' that it is further west.

"Won't higher gas prices make the US economy suffer?" Price changes usually, not always, affect the short term. But is the US alone in feeling the upsurge in price, whatever it is locally elsewhere? The price goes up for everybody, China included. And as for medium term economic considerations, if the fundamentals are in place the price never historically affects output.

Another FAQ:
"If we just drill more, won't that keep the price lower?"

Before getting to the bigger picture, notice that Norway can easily supply it's own oil needs and still export plenty. Notice also that their pump price of petrol is well on the high side. Notice also that Norway actually gives a sh#t about their own people. (oooops, let that last one slip, sorry).

In the last 50 years, barrel price is set by worldwide demand and worldwide supply. As pointed out above, local/regional/national price of petrol is set by the localities, but the movements up or down are set by the official exchange price of whatever benchmark crude.

Here's a chart of the top existing sources:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oil_fields

I'm not going to paste the chart here, but look down the list a bit before you find a US field at the 20th spot, then quite a bit further down before you find the next US wells.

So, the US gets back to furthering domestic drilling; make no mistake that the Dakotas will produce useful output, and that sane and unhurried offshore drilling would be of some help. But look at the chart/list again and tell me how that will have any affect whatsoever on the world price of oil.

None. Zip.

What refiners pay is the going world price, and what you pay at the pump is determined by whatever your country and state decide to take from that to contribute to society or not, but local drilling in the US will  never affect any of that materially.

The only way to drive away from this mess is to get to less energy usage by way of technology.

Not by digging out more of what got us into this mess and perpetuating it.

Higher gas prices is the only way for any of that to occur.

Keep heads high folks, things are going where they need to right now.

That is true, but you are dreaming... That isn't going to happen, while the people who own the oil companies need us to keep the trucks. They'll stretch us, but only for up to the point they feel, the elasticity can accomodate. You must think the US is losing it's pants warring poor people in oil rich countries for nothing.

Unfortunately, I do not believe, it was accidental/coincidental, that Goldman Sacks decided to chit on oil prices today. It was also reported today, that people are pulling back on travels/spending, and consideration of buying new homes, with higher Gas prices. M

It was not a choice on my part.

It was a limitation of the Bill Gates/Sun Microsystems/flash/adobe ........

process.

Some copy/paste in combo with some bbs software works well.

Other combos not well at all.

I am consistent in method, and the modern day internet is not.

Sorry.

I have never had such a situation before, where the copy/paste hijacked whatever was going on before elsewhere.

I absolutely hate the above post. Allow me the narrow edit time frame here to fix it.

Bossy!! It's good to see you.

I agree with you - when oil prices shoot up, someone is benefiting from it. And it's usually not one of us.
