Maybe it isn't fair to people who are legitimately less able to express themselves articulately in English because it's not their first language or because they're disabled in some way (dyslexic, etc). But your words are pretty much all people can see of you in this medium, and not taking the time and effort to present your words well is the equivalent of showing up at a social event sloppily dressed, not showered and with your hair not combed. Harsh perhaps, but true. PS - you think this should be my new profile? [8D] Bet I'd get lots of responses.

When I graded papers as a grad student, the professor told us to grade for meaning, not language. For him the most important element of writing for his students was the organization and expression of ideas. I thought his tack was the correct one.

hmmm..... as one who often use the letter ' e ' when apparently it is not required, one felt she just had to speak to this thread. Yes one could constantly use 'spell checker'. It is probably something one should seriously consider. one should also probably seriously consider giving up chocolate but that is also probably not going to occur. As to the 'translator' services such as Babelfish, one has to say that such translations often leave something to be desire. Often what emerges, is not at all what one meant to convey, regardless of how the translation services did it. Also, some things donot translate at all well. one feel this way: one has things to say on lots of things if they are of interest. one also like to use 'humour' within writings because life itself, it is so damn serious that one believe more humour in the world is just what we all need. one also at times, is not certain if a word require an ' e ' or not.... if it looks better with one, then buffy use one. If it is not correct, then ah well. If folks get their underpants in a twist over how other people spell or if the grammar is not quite correct, well???? Think on this now.... if that is the most terrible dilemma you have to face.... if that is the worse headache in your life that you must read things of that nature..... then consider yourself fortunate, k folks! And investe in tylonal (think of all the money you will make and on your own headaches too)!! respectfully, the ' e ' masacrerererer (not quite sure when to stop here).... buffy

Some of the strangest words come up when I use spell check. If you rely solely on it you may end up making very little sense anyway! I have also tried using babelfish when texting people who don't speak English and they inform me that it often comes out as something completely silly... I understand that first impressions are lasting impressions, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to let go of some of the little things that irk us. Not everyone has the benefit of a University degree or even a College education, and some people that have higher education can't spell or punctuate to save their life!

I agree. Spelling and grammar are indeed difficult when English is not a primary language, and sometimes even when it is! It seems to me, under most circumstances, the one who posts would perform the simple courtesy of checking spelling or grammar (a number of reliable translation pages as well of the spell checker programs cited on this thread) prior to hitting the ‘OK’ button. Most everyone makes typos and most all of us are well versed in and fluent typo readers. Sometimes the lateness of the hour or our own multitasking allows a glaring error to go through and we can only hope for forgiveness. In personal email, especially in an initial introduction, you can believe that grammar and proper spelling may be the difference between getting to know the wonderful person behind the difficult to read email or reply to someone else who at said the same thing but with a more attractive presentation. As so many have said on this thread: words are all we have in this medium. It makes sense to use them to their best advantage. Thank you for the opportunity to share some thoughts on this topic. I gues y'all are used to my typos by now. When Im fully awake and know I'll be here for a while, what I always do is to type in Word, use the spell checker and then read the post. I kick it up to14 point to read easier.. Although my level of spellong is good and grammar also good (enough to write a masters thesis), I am one who is also dyslexic. For me it hits when I'm stressed to buggery, dead tired or in a shit load of pain. Atleastof the three is present most of the time.... What happens to me as I know it does to a few others i talk to off forums, is that when entering text into text boxes even xlowley and re-reading the text it looks just fine. It is not untill it is posted that the errors are seen (hence my edits).. If you add to this a pair of extra large paws/habds which as often enough when I speed up hit two or three keus similtaneously, you can see how typos creep in... It takes far less time to write in word and after it is read and edited pasted into the entry area you save so much time ....

I only play grammer police when someone is trying to browbeat another. I myself get sloppy when it is late at night and would die without my spell checker as my grammer is vastly better than my ability to spell.

I don't have a problem with anyone making spelling and grammar mistakes to whom English is a second language. No matter how badly they butcher it, I guarantee it's much better than my Spanish, French, German etc.... That being said I do expect a certain level of literacy in profiles in particular. A profile is your first impression, so it should be worth taking the extra time to spell check, or even have someone else proof for you. I'm certain if you posted to the introduction forum and let everyone know you did not fluently write English many people would offer to help rewrite your profile for you. The reason it bothers me is not because I'm a purist (I make enough typos and misspells myself) but because it shows laziness and sloppiness. I take a lot of time writing emails and forum posts. Sometimes writing and rewriting 4-5 times or more and rereading a couple more times. So I don't understand why someone can't take at respectable amount of time to answer me back. If I spend 5 minutes writing a nice, well thought out email, and I get back a 30 second, typo riddled, misspelled mess, why should I waste my time in further communication? Obviously I'm not worth 5 minutes of someone elses time, so why should I bother? That's the real issue, at least for me. If someone is trying, and doing their best, I'm fine with it. We all have different sets of skills. It's when someone doesn't even try that I get irritated.

many years ago when the net was all text based people were more concerned with what others had to say then the manner it was said in. Now it seems the manner is more important then the content. The common deciancy and consideration springs up as always and rightley so . What ever possessed me to think that one would consider haveing anything to do with another in a text based media when the other spelt badley. Could that ber because most in the text based media remain onley in that . Stats show that the greater amount of people on line never mneet each other and that the general reason is cause of the clearity of the content in their getting to know each other and the impressions they have made by this means they are unable to live up to cause it is all based in text form not in reality . The reality of it is that it is not gramer that causes problems but content . Mostley based on anonimity the 200 lb lady and bucky the dog faced boy can for sure hide in text these flaws. Are these sites about meeting others with like intrests or the ability to impress by correct english good grammer and style another so the briliance and charm of the article conceal the bull crap of the content . Every one of us has flaws the other can find and pick at if we look to see it . I joined this place to meet others and have had in correct spelling good grammer nice content as have we likley all had hurt . it is hard to be taken serriousley from the hight of a chair . but i have never hidden or lied about it to anyone . My handle is my name in life not another made up one to hide behind . Maybe if i chose a name like the highlordboss and used spell checker i would get better responces . Please realise i am not taking ashot at anyone here for the manner in howe they present them self but for me i would rather honesty and sincerity anyday with bad grammer over the other choice . intolerance for others is never a good thing it is illegal to eat pussy in california for example to be struck with a flogger in some states is illegal [Mod Note: email address removed.
