TotalState -> RE: correct grammer (10/15/2007 8:48:41 AM)

As someone who speaks English only as a third language, I must say I have very little patience with people who do not at least attempt to use proper sentence structure on forums.  Being foreign is no excuse for lazyness. Being dyslexic is a sort of excuse, but even then you can tell the difference between someone posting in ALL CAPS or netsp34k, or simply being inconsistent in the way they spell "inglish".

No, there is no reason to poke at occasional spelling errors, typos or grammatical errors.  But the sheer volume of text that I read daily usually means that I simply ignore badly written posts...unless they are addressed directly at me, in which case I tend to ask for clarification, and even restructuring (I get headaches when people don't use line and paragraph breaks).

Why do people revive threads over a year old?

Maybe because they feel the topic is still valid?
In this case I think it is an interesting one, though it might be better suited for one of the off topic fora

On topic; I personally am more bothered by lack of punctuation and capitilisation than bad spelling. Grammar isn't my strongest point either, so it would be foolish to judge anyone on that.
It does strike me, though, how poor grip on the language even some native English speakers have. Unfortunately the same could be said on the Swedish I see written on many of the Swedish fora and it might be a sign of education not being what it ought in many countries in the world.

Why not create a new thread then?

Brilliant idea! Though I really couldn't be arsed to. Besides, there would, no doubt, be someone mentioning the fact it had been discussed before.

Do not concern yourself with the spelling and grammer nazis, they are not worth your time anyway if that is how they judge a person, "text based medium", or not.
If they can not take the time to discover the true you, they are not worth crossing the street to piss on, even if they were on fire.

Oh, please. It's an unbelievably bad salesman who doesn't try to impress his audience with both the product and his presentation. If all I have to "discover the true you" with are your words, and they make you look like an idiot, then I'm going to assume that you are truly an idiot.

(Yes, I was trying to be ironic. I know these forums, though. no one will get the joke.)

Perhaps, Sir, you don't give some of us nearly enough credit.  Don't you think????

I agree, don't I?

MidMichCowboy -> RE: correct grammer (10/15/2007 6:03:50 PM)

Here is a couple of quotations that reflect my feelings:

Words, like glasses, obscure everything they do not make clear.
Joseph Joubert

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
Leonardo da Vinci

This medium depends on language for its understanding. When we can’t understand what is written, any value in the thoughts behind them is lost.

You know what they say about assuming!
If you make assumptions, instead of divining the truth, then who, my friend, is the real idiot?

I am writing without reading any other responses (just so ya know).

I never, ever judge someone on their spoken words or their ability to write them with finesse'.

heartcream -> RE: correct grammer (10/16/2007 12:10:24 AM)

Oh I kinda love it when all the grammar opinions come out. I find it funny. I am new here but I swear it is the grammar posts that leave me feeling scared for my life.

For me I like to 'feel' the person I am reading. If someone can write so perfectly and have an interesting tone to their posts great. If they dont write so 'well' but I can get a sense of who they are, that excites me more than all the grammar-know-how. I scan over so many 'intelligent' posts because they bore me to tears with the self-righteous what-nots. This is something I usually do late at night, read some threads, post here and there.

For me it is an informal past time. Sue me because I dont copy/paste and check in with the 'authorities' (some computer program I dont feel like learning about right now) before I post.

True too when someone is spouting their 'wisdom' and chronically spell words wrong, I do get a snicker here and there.

LadySeraphina -> RE: correct grammer (10/16/2007 12:17:13 AM)

I am a grammar and punctuation freak. I do prefer when someone at least attempts to write full sentences, and I do tend to be harsher on boys who introduce themselves using NetSp34k. That said, my own consort is a terrible typist, and his spelling leaves something to be desired.

If the effort is there to express yourself well, then it's a simple matter to overlook the errors. Those who lack expression AND grammar are simply not worth my reading. If that is a chronic problem for them, perhaps meeting people in person will be more effective than using written communication.

LDRandAstarte, you are my hero for the day.  Thank you for posting this brilliant comment.  In addition to agreeing with what you wrote, i would just add that there are plenty of posts that i have read on this site that don't make a lot of sense, even with perfect spelling and grammar.  There's a lot more to good writing, that communicates a clear and interesting thought, than simply being able to get an "A" in grammar and spelling.

IronBear -> RE: correct grammer (5/4/2009 11:42:41 AM)

Dyslexia is not always a matter of incorrect spelling or grammar, it is as often as not, the dyslexic just doesn't see the errors at the time. This happens to me when entering things into posting boxes in forums and chat or filling out forms. I find the spelling and grammar in MS Word is quite good especially when I reset the spelling to either English/English or Australian/English. Grammar wise, the rules have changed somewhat since I left school and although I know the new formats, I simply choose to use the grammar I was taught being truer to my beloved Victorian/Edwardian period of literacy. I also use MS Word when composing letters and documents or even a longer post as it allows me to write my thoughts and things I want to say beforehand and then compost the document in my head just before I write it. I can also set the font to a larger setting making it far easier to proof read too.

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: correct grammer (5/4/2009 12:18:04 PM)

~Fast Reply~

May I suggest Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, and Visual Thesaurus. May I also suggest composing posts and letters in a word processor first. Those have helped my son, who is a severe dyslexic, considerably.

I have to admit, I consider grammar, spelling, and general ability to express oneself when considering an individual. If I have the chance to speak with hir in person, rather than depending on chat, and find hir to be capable of holding a well-thought-out conversation, I'll typically overlook problems with spelling.... especially since my son and several of my companions have dyslexia to one degree or another, and I have discalculia and occasional dyslexia myself, though very mild.
