There are 20 plus years studies on Teeth whitening, Teeth will not ever get so white that they look fake unless you decide on veneers. believe me or don't ...no need to get nasty . Oh Fyi i work with one of the best in the states for Dentisty...non socialized medicine as well.

my job is to whiten teeth in a dental office. FYI it does not damage enamel or cause problems. At home strips are ok but tend to cause a checkerboard effect..they move and aren't as strong as trays made for you or a in office procedure. please feel free to email me with questions.

Really? According to my dentist overdoing the whitening tends to damage your teeth, if you have healthy teeth you can do it, but if you don't and you keep on doing it, it's the same effect as bleaching your hair and I don't think anybody will argue that bleaching your hair makes your hair healthier, additionally it increases the risk of mouth cancer.

I just tend to trust a dentist who I know is very good (I'm actually not the only one who flies to Germany for dental appointments and to see him) and who will advise me to not overdo something that would earn him money over some random person on the internet.

I'm not saying that whitening your teeth will absolutely ruin them, it does depend on your teeth and how often you do it, but it's not as harmless as a lot of people claim it is. Personally I prefer just having normal white teeth and not the fake whiter than white teeth that make you reach for the sunglasses. Those super white teeth look about as attractive as the trout pout caused by too much collagen injections in the lips.

Every time I have tried whitening, it has made my teeth really hurt. Just not worth it to me

Hello Everyone.

I have been wanting to whiten my teeth for a very long time, sadly, I have been scared to take the enamel off and cause damage.

Has anyone had bad or good luck with any of the hundreds of products out there? or
How about the dentist ?
How about up keep, or expense?

Thanks in advance
SWB

Haven't read the thread, so apologies in advance if this hase already been said. Go to your dentist, tell him your thoughts and dilemma. Don't let him talk you into a costly in office treatment and get the information you want. You will also find out if you have any cavities and probably a cleaning too.

I don't use tartar control, it is like scrubbing the teeth with Ajax and I would worry about losing enamel.

Back when I was pregnant with my son there was a mouthwash that had two openings in the top, to pour out at the same time...one side had hydrogen peroxide and the other side was sweet and minty and green.  Loved it.

Several years later, it was no longer sold and I turned to hydrogen peroxide, holding a cap ful in my mouth for a minute or two.  It worked fine but...blech.  Reminded me of holding ejaculate in my mouth.  It is unfortunate that I love Smuckers black raspberry jam, coffee, tea, blueberries, etc., things that will make my teeth turn yellow, and that I feel the need to remove the staining from my teeth.  I LIKE my teeth to be more white.

Anyway, I settled on something from the Dollar General Store, their store brand, DG, a mouthwash labeled as WHITENING, Pre-Brush Rinse.  I love this stuff and have been using it for around eight years.  It does the job and I don't need to use anything else.  During months when I am not drinking more than tea, I get away with using the mouthwash only once per week, whenever berry picking season hits or when I start buying some black raspberry jam, I use it every day.

My son hates mouthwash, and when his teeth got horrible from drinking coffee and having blueberries and blackberries and black raspberries, I bought him some whitening toothpaste (not with harsh abrasives, but with oxygen bleach) called Colgate Whitening toothpaste, with baking soda and peroxide.  He brushes only twice per day and his teeth are WHITE.   Yay...they had been looking like yellowy orange fangs and within a week turned back into pearly whites.

gargle 3x a week with H2O2, hydrogen peroxide after you brush. Don't swallow it. More than that can harm enamel but that is enough to whiten. You can even do it 3x in one day to see the effect. I think it's $1 or $2 a bottle. Don't swallow it, just causes bad bad heartburn.

i've used baking soda and arm & hammer toothpaste for years and i really like it. it's one of my few brand loyalties.
when i was a kid, i got attacked by a cat and got a HORRIBLE infection that resulted in lots of really strong drugs and eventual surgery. one of the medicines they gave me stained my teeth a funny color and they said it would likely be permanent (to add insult to injury, they later found that i didn't even need that medicine, since i didn't have tuberculosis =p)

my grandma swore by baking soda and peroxide, so i used that a lot, and switched to arm & hammer, and my teeth have never been prettier. thank goodness -- i didn't do much smiling in my early years, but after i started using arm & hammer, it was no longer and issue. =p

a relative used an OTC whitener and got really good results without much sensitivity, so i've thought about trying that, just to make them extra sparkly. =p sparkly is good!
but i have REALLY sensitive teeth, and he doesn't (he used to drive me nuts by biting on popsicles -- gaaah! the thought a lone makes my face hurt =p) so i dunno that it would work the same for me.

Why the teeth is discolored will decide on what is best for you.

If it is a childhood cause (injury causing discoloration of the tooth making it dark colored) it might require more extensive treatment like root canal and veneers etc;

If it is due to excess fluoride exposure in childhood, it is more challenging when severe .. but still can be managed.

If it is due to food/tea/coffee/smoking etc; they are amenable to just cleaning. I'd suggest take a dentist's appt and get them cleaned (scaling) and then reassess.

One most important thing to note is that television ads with sparkling WHITE teeth are NOT ideal. Teeth naturally have a tint which is NOT exactly the pure white ... it has an yellow or brown tint and each teeth might have a slight difference in reflectivity etc;

So, the best route would be a dental appointment for scaling and enquire regarding the stains and procedure options. Many note significant improvement with just scaling alone!
