It still is if this article is to be believed;

Viet Nam or Iraq - It's Still a Rich Man's War, but a Poor Man or Woman's Army

And for what, are your lives getting any better ?

What a wonderful find. Do you have a branch in the UK?

"Spark is the name not only of a workers newspaper, but also of the political organization that publishes it. Our aim is to build a revolutionary workers party in the United States. We base ourselves on the political heritage of Marx, Engels, Lenin and Trotsky.

And no, I wouldn't put a lot of faith in what's printed there

Fortunate Son, CCR.--- you believe them?

Anyway stats on Civil war show it, stats on korea, vietnam, and all up to today show it.

Hermann Goering's Quote
On War And The People

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."   --Goering at the Nuremberg Trials

Sure.  I just didn't think there were many here of an advanced age that would remember the times before the civil war, precisely since they don't even remember yesterday correctly, alot of them.

Wait that's a shocker.

Let me see people on the lower end of the economic spectrum often use the military to improve their lot in life.  They exchange their service for GI Bills and college assistance.  They earn every penny the receive.

The wealthy have different options.  I can promise you if I had a trust fund to fall back on there is no way I would be signing up for anything that might get me shot.

Some of these people have given the ultimate sacrifice for their duty and that chance at a better life.  Comparing them to some poor kid in the 60's who was drafted and tossed on a plane to Vietnam is shameful.

I have nothing but respect for people who have served.  I also have much empathy for the people who were drafted and thrown into a bad situation.

Our soldiers deserve nothing but respect.  Anyone who can't separate the service men from the political side of war, well let's just leave it at that.  I don't want any gold bordered emails today.

No real news here. "War is a Racket' author...General Smedley Butler. It has been this way since 1898. ALL wars are wars for power and profit...period.

The expression after the Confederacy passed a draft that exempted sufficient slave owners became...'Rich man's war...poor man's fight.'

So, they do want war; it's a matter of pressing the right buttons? Appeal to fear and pride?

Is it really? You do realize that recruiters go to neighborhoods where young people have few options other than the military or joining a gang, ending up dead or in jail... any way you turn it is a war for many of these young people... whether it is the war on the streets being waged as a result of US drug laws, or a war in the desert, dead is dead, doesn't matter which way you buy the farm. To me, the comparison still stands....and that doesn't negate their service one iota

Exactly !

Use the right words, possibly chuck in some happenings or lies about happenings or possibilities and then the war mongers have you, because we believe our rulers.

Remember Bliar, his lying rant to the people prior to the invasion of Iraq.

And I know why he converted to catholicism, a few Hail Marys and he is absolved by god for his crimes, important for a god fearing person struck with guilt.

So let me ask, do you agree this was exactly what happened with Iraq?

Which isn't my point at all.

Perhaps the warmongers are in league with your average man on the street.

How may Americans supported the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan?

Fucking loads of 'em. And they wanted out when things went wrong.

And of course they'll come on here and excuse it based on x,y,z.

Actually there were a lot less people who supported going to Iraq than wanted to go into Afghanistan... and if it were not for 911 you would be hard pressed to find those who supported it.

They had to lie to people to get support for the war in Iraq, and when it was obvious that we were lied to, it was partially what led to Republicans losing power.
