Status: offline 		I am being refereed to get a gastric surgery because of my health.  Right now, the nurse is going over the guidelines to see if I am allowed to have the surgery because I am on Medicare and Medicaid.

If there anyone who had gastric bypass, please tell me what it is like.  I am gunning for the sleeve bypass.

Status: offline 		A friend of mine had it, without trying to make you paranoid, she was not very happy with it.

I would suggest that you try to find a forum of people who had it and check with them which problems and side effects they had after the surgery and how they differ with the different methods and how they can be avoided, my friend said she wished she would have done it before the surgery, as the doctors didn't tell her about a lot of the problems. Mind you her surgery was about 5 or 6 years ago and the methods might have improved a lot.

I've had two friends get gastric bypass--one did the sleeve bypass a long time ago--the other did the gastric band.  Both saw results--my friend with the sleeve (and it was quite some time ago) had lots of other medical issues, so she gained weight back and had other medical problems, but I do not know if any of it was related to the surgery.  My other friend has kept the weight off--her biggest challenge continues to be (after three years plus) sticking to the diet instructions.  She has to be extremely careful what she eats...and how much of it.  So she'll eat a little tiny meals instead of 2-3 "normal" size ones.

Status: offline 		If possible go to a university medical center and find a good bariatric program with surgeons who specialize in gastric bypass.  The more experienced the surgeon the greater the likelihood of good results. 
I played with a Dom who had gastric bypass.  He had high blood pressure, was pre-diabetic and has a history of heart disease in his family.  He did really well and said the most difficult part is following the diet and eating 4 to 5 small meals a day instead of 3 meals.  He also has to be careful of how much sugar he eats or it can make him very nauseated.

Status: offline 		Do not have this surgery without a support group. Search in your area for one at a hospital or better yet, your surgeon should have something. Do not do this without that kind of support. At groups like that you can meet people from the stage you're in to those who've been many years post op.

There are also tons of websites with tons of information on them from actual patients. Everyone's results are different. For every bad result, there are more folks with good ones. I am a success from this surgery.. I'm 9 years out this year and for the most part kept most of my weight off, but for about 10 - 15 pounds...

again DO NOT have this surgery without support -- from others in the same situation you are in.

She has some very pretty scars from the laparoscopy: they look like butterflies and dragonflies.

She did very well with hers initially but she did not keep up with the followups and the support groups and began to gain weight back.

Alcohol (and I know you like wine coolers etc) did tend to make her tipsy very quickly and repeatedly... it would hit her and then fade and return.

To the best of my knowledge, Medicaid and/or Medicare coverage for gastric bypass surgery is slim and very strict qualifications apply. If you are a type 2 diabetic and your BMI (body mass index) is greater than 35, and your diabetetes is NOT well controlled with medication, you MAY qualify. You will be required to pass a psychological exam for approval with medicaid as well.

If I remember correctly, you were doing quite well with your diet. What happened?

You say your doctor is referring you for gastric bypass based on health issues. What health issues are they? Other health issues can also preclude you from being approved. Medicaid wants to see that you have put forth every possible effort to lose weight on your own. If you have tried all these other methods and they have failed through no fault of your own, they may approve you.

Expect the approval process to be lengthy and grueling, lasting possibly up to a year. Medicaid is a federally funded healthcare program for the indigent. A very high percentage of women receiving Medicaid are morbidly obese, and I'm sure that any number of them would welcome the opportunity to have this surgery. I don't say this next thing to be rude, but you damn well better be able to prove you are more special and more deserving than all those other women who would like it as well. Will you die without this surgery (much quicker than without it)? Do you have other health problems that will become easier or more difficult to manage with this surgery?

I know people who had it and are happy, and other who had it and gained it all back. Think long and hard before making your decision. I qualified for the surgery because of my diabetes. Something completely unrelated caused a delay in my planning. Since then, I have lost 35 pounds on my own and suffered kidney failure. Wasn't meant to be, but my health has improved. LOL well up until the kidney failure it was improving!

Status: offline 		I do appreciate the support.  I did answer your CM, haus.  Mom had the computer last night/morning so I did not view it until this morning.  I did try to diet myself until I got the edema, which caused a deep depression.  When I get depressed, I tend to eat more, a vivacious cycle.  I threw myself into my crocheting at times.

Also, I got some kind of arthritis and firbomyalgia.  I try walking and after 5 minutes, I was crying because of the pain.  Same when standing on my feet.  I have to use the special go-carts when we go to Walmart.  I even try to take the stairs carefully.  Lizard lives on the second floor and it is a bitch to handle.

I do admit that I do have a membership with WebMD.  My surgeon has over 3k surgeries so I know that he is a good one (my neurologist recommend him).  All that is left to do is go to the seminar and then the surgery itself (perhaps I can request a tummy tuck..LOL!). 

Last time I have a surgery was when I was getting a hysterectomy. I develop an infection afterwards.  I could not keep nothing down, had a grand mal seizure and then the infection itself.

Status: offline 		I would personally get the depression shit under control first because all the gastric surgeries in the world won't do Jack shit good if you won't follow regimin when depressed and you don't/can't/ won't do what you have to when depressed.

And you don't have to walk to exercise, you can swim or bike.

Status: offline 		Believe me, I want a bike.  I am looking at a new gym that just open up.  It has some of the best equipment and free weights (I do better with resistance training). No swimming either since there no pools open at this time.  I prefer to swim in private, not surrounded by kids.  Also remember that Mom has to join with me (she is gaining some weight herself) since I cannot drive.

I will keep up with this thread.  Got to check other threads and sites.
