Look no further than your name.  It describes you completely.  The rest of the letters are window dressing.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Stephen Hawking: There is no heaven; it's a fairy story (5/17/2011 8:14:31 AM)

Maybe we'll find out Saturday

mnottertail -> RE: Stephen Hawking: There is no heaven; it's a fairy story (5/17/2011 8:21:45 AM)

Hell, I didn't know you weren't even feeling good, Fats.  How do you have it down to Saturday?  Modern medicine.........hmmmmmmmmmm.

Real0ne -> RE: Stephen Hawking: There is no heaven; it's a fairy story (5/17/2011 8:32:28 AM)

well you cannot join polar opposites and call it the same-thing. some-thing is not no-thing and no-thing is not some-thing.

its either one or the other but cannot be both, and to claim no-thing defies as I said the fundamental laws of physics.

Now in math sure you can make any claim you wish to realize, but matter and energy are tangible (at least by extension of our instruments), and that will fuck that position up for you.

When has Hawking (or anybody in this thread, come to that) claimed any such thing?

His nothing is the void.   There is always something in nothing here.

Thats what he is talking about.

infinitely smaller is not zero, you can approach zero but never can there be zero with regard to energy and matter.

Hawkings knows or should know that.

think of it like slicing a hair.

you will forever have something left, no matter how many gadzillions of times you slice it.

so for instance when you approach .00000000000000000000000000000000000000001

its mathematical laziness to say zero, technically its not zero however.

Moonhead -> RE: Stephen Hawking: There is no heaven; it's a fairy story (5/17/2011 9:00:55 AM)

When you're talking to a mathematically illiterate audience you simplify. It gives people like you something to split hairs over, after all.

mnottertail -> RE: Stephen Hawking: There is no heaven; it's a fairy story (5/17/2011 9:10:02 AM)

OK look energy can transform.  Would you 0 as a layman consider radiowaves as substance, could you tell me how much mass in radio waves surrounds you at this very instant?

Don't derive meaning from hyphens or casual speech.  they are no more real than you, they only convey ideas, and not always the total verdant and folgent infinity of reality
.

Last time I checked energy/matter can neither be created nor destroyed.

That depends on what you mean by "created" and "destroyed". Matter CAN be created out of the vacuum (the standard definition of nothing).

Didn't an ex wife or a maid push his wheel chair outside once and left him sitting in the sun ?

mnottertail -> RE: Stephen Hawking: There is no heaven; it's a fairy story (5/17/2011 9:16:37 AM)

I hope so, it would be death to never see the sun again.

I think the only value of Mr. Hawking statement is for his biographers. Just a psychology of a dying great man. An attempt to convince himself his model of the Universe has something to do with the reality or even correct.

mnottertail -> RE: Stephen Hawking: There is no heaven; it's a fairy story (5/17/2011 10:32:17 AM)

Yeah, stepping out of a Gary Numan music video and saying that lends a ponderous weight that is going to be hard to decoct in view of your demonstrated expertise in this matter.

I have not died (yet), so yes, sorry, no expertise.

This is actually kinda deep....

I bet you can't say that ten times quickly.

Interesting. I wonder how Judge Judy feels about that.

he's probably been practising saying that ever since he read those Steve Ditko Mister A comics in the '70s...

Use the scientific method.

Hypothesis. There is an afterlife.

Now let's make predictions and test them.

Ok. Prediction is that we find nothing.

"Heaven, heaven is a place
A place where nothing,
Nothing ever happens..

It's hard to imagine that nothing at all
could be so exciting, could be so much fun."
