A key senator has asked the Social Security Administration to investigate how people who live their lives role-playing as “adult babies” are able to get taxpayer-funded disability payments — after one of them was featured on a recent reality TV episode wearing diapers, feeding from a bottle and using an adult-sized crib he built.

Two things...

“Given that Mr. Thornton is able to determine what is appropriate attire and actions in public, drive himself to complete errands, design and custom-make baby furniture to support a 350-pound adult and run an Internet support group, it is possible that he has been improperly collecting disability benefits for a period of time,” Mr. Coburn wrote in a letter Monday to Inspector General Patrick P. O'Carroll Jr.

...................

In an email response to The Washington Times, Mr. Thornton threatened to kill himself if his Social Security payments are taken away, and said the television episode showing him doing woodwork oversold his abilities.

“You wanna test how damn serious I am about leaving this world, screw with my check that pays for this apartment and food. Try it. See how serious I am. I don’t care,” the California man said. “I have no problem killing myself. Take away the last thing keeping me here, and see what happens. Next time you see me on the news, it will be me in a body bag.”

A suicide threat should always be taken seriously. 72 hours mandatory observation with a complete mental and physical evaluation is warranted.

There are very many people collecting disability. Most could do SOMETHING!

This actually isn't lifestyle related.  The guy is in fact living as an AB, but Coburn is questioning whether he is fit to work.  Some ABs are, some aren't, and Coburn suspects he is.

It's obvious that the guy has some issues, but is able to focus and accomplish things.  Disability claims based on mental issues are always difficult to prove or disprove.

Would be fitting, wouldn't it? No problem with somebody living his kink, but it seems he's letting tax payers pay for it, somebody else with an actual disability is possibly not getting the money because there are no funds. How about all those "slaves" who write and want to be chained up in my basement for the rest of their lives, can they apply for social funding? Because if that's possible, I'm packing in working, as I don't want to finance their kink (hence usually hit delete and block when such requests end up in my CM mailbox)

From the article, "In an extensive biography on his web page, Mr. Thornton says he worked as a security guard for a year and a half but said trauma stemming from childhood abuse, combined with other mental problems, made it impossible for him to hold the job, and he has been receiving SSI payments for most of the last 10 years."

I'm guessing he's got PTSD and an anxiety disorder mixed in there.  When those are extreme enough, a person can receive disability if they can prove the conditions are severe enough that a person can't work.  A panic attack once in a while doesn't cut it, but three or four day can if they are happening at your job.

I have a lot of sympathy for people suffering with PTSD, but from everything there I feel he's taking the piss! He's running an online forum, making stuff and is living his kink, allowing to be filmed how he assembles things, etc...

Alright, he might not be suited as a security guard but other things would be available, also if he'd be suffering from a lot of panic attacks, would he really have lasted 1 1/2 years on the job?

It does remind me a bit of the people who go on talk shows to brag how they are not working and making money on the side they don't tax, and then wonder why the authorities check up on them...

I've only ever had to deal with one person who went through this to the same extreme.  She was just your average working gal.  Before the problems started, she was just like everybody else.  As far as we knew, there was no new trauma.  For a while there, I kind of wondered if she had been raped and didn't want to tell anyone.  She'd drift off and kind of shake.  The progression was kind of scary to watch.  She'd be fine one minute and then the next, she'd be completely unresponsive.  You couldn't touch her either.  Not even to get her out of a production area.

Fifteen or twenty minutes later, she'd recover and go back to being like everybody else.  When she was responsive again, she knew that she "lost time".  Her conscious mind had no recollection of what had happened.  I still think something happened to her to bring it all on.  Maybe something that her mind was trying to deal with on some level that she was fighting to accept.

I am on disability. I am both physically and mentally unable to work any longer. I stroked out almost five years ago and am schizo-affective. Never mind all the other mental stuff I deal with, I also have short term memory loss.I know full well how hard it is to get on disability(it takes years.) and how frightening it can be to be dependent on that small income. Trust me, it's not a lot of money. I make $773.00 a month. I can't live by myself. Can't afford it. But this guy, sounds like he can manage just fine. He can make furniture and handle a website. However on the other hand I know from experience that dealing with people in person is a great deal harder than dealing with them online. So he will probably have to go through the process all over again to see if he is still considered disabled. If he's not, he should be grateful. It means he can once again be in full control of his life and not be reliant on someone else. If by some miracle I were both physically and mentally able to work again, I'd jump at the chance. Some of us though, really can't do it anymore. And others take advantage of the system.I hope for his sake it's the former and not the latter.

Last week in our local news there was an update on this guy. Shortly after the story was released questions about possible disability fraud were raised and investigated. The case was dismissed.

He may have PTSD but it bothers me because it seems like indulding in baby play is not going to do anything but put him in a happy zone he will never want to leave.

It took my ex roommate less than a year to get on disability. Of course he could work and lied through his teeth to get it, so maybe that is the difference. Maybe if we went after the asshats like him, it would be easier for people like you, who actually need it, to get it.

I saw the video from the show on YouTube.

while he may not be fit to work in a brick and mortor building day in and day out, he clearly  has skills he could support himself and make money , good money too at home. He could sell his ab furniture and he could work from home online. It might be tricky to find jobs you can do online at your leisure, but I'm betting he could.  He clearly has pc smarts, and wood working/ carpentry skills. It'd be a lucrative enough skill. If he's capable of figuring out how to make furniture, go to a lumber yard, buy and pay for it all then drive home, navigate dangerous tools, handle measuring an cutting an building it, he's capable of using his skills to have a job. Chances are he probably prefers to suck off ssi.

It depends on where you are I guess. I was approved near immediately, and it's enough for me to live on, because I don't , or at the time I didn't have a bunch of bills and other crap. Someone who used to be a friend of mine, it took a very very long time for her to get SSI, she had to get a lawyer and had to fight for getting SSI. She was fighting from the time her daughter was 6 months, and when she finally got it her daughter was just turning four.

That is true. I was on SSI for several years with bipolar disorder, it wasn't until i went to work for the same community mental health center that had treated me for nearly 20 years that i was able to not only get off the government dole, but also go off my meds. i am now healthy, happy and more self aware than ever before.

Did the TV show exaggerate it?

Because there are jobs, he'd be well suited for.

And some jobs can be positively anti-stressful. :)

What people are not realizing it took a while to build the furniture, The sen also thought the show had paid him to be on the show and they didn't. I'm on disability and it took me 4 years and 16 surgeries to get it. I'm happy to say as of Monday I'm starting a new job and hope I can make it...

You know, when my dad was alive he had to fight like hell every single year to stay on ssi. My dad had copd and an enlarged heart. He was hooked up to an oxygen machine 24/7 and the furthest he could walk was from the couch and to the bathroom. He had to live with my sister for someone to help him with even basic washing and a nurse who would arrive at least twice a week. But yet the SSI people would scrutinize his disability and at one time they dropped him saying he could work. WTF??? My sister had to go and fight to get him back on.

And then you have people like this guy who obviously can move around on his own and has abilities. I mean I wouldn't have a clue to building stuff but yet it seems this guy is very good at it. Since he's able to do so, he could just stay at home and make furniture and sell it or even work for a construction company.

This kind of stuff pisses me off because of how my dad was treated. It just seems that the system picks and chooses who they want on and off.

Littlewonder>>When hunting for motive never ascribe purpose when incompentence will suffice.

I live in a different country but red-tape is red tape. Some officials enforce the rules and regs too far. Some dont do it far enough. It all depends on personal motivation, the supervisor and local management. Somebody very upright, uptight and upstanding may just have taken one look at the lifestyle this guy was living and run a mile rather than do a proper assement.

I would also say we are speculating from very little and unreliable data, ie an entertainment/journalistic tv show and the musings of a politician about the show neither of which source tend to be heavy on fact or truth in my experience.
However I'd say if you agree to apear on a TV show you have to be prepared for at least some level of scrutiny unless your really not capable of consent at all.

I agree with what Steven and Thaz said.
I do question the guys judgement in letting
himself be filmed. If he's a fleecer he's a
foolish one to open himself up to scrutiny.

The idea that most people on disability could
do some sort of work is conjecture.
I know people who had no choice but to
seek to get on disability and Medicaid.
They would like to work and some are capable
of partime work but there's no medical
coverage and they have chronic conditions
that require ongoing treatment. I know
several people with lupus where this is
the case.
Some people with disabilities may be able
to scratch up a little money doing something
from home but selling stuff on eBay isn't
the most reliable of income sources and
there's no health plan.
And having skills is one thing. Brink able
to market them and apply them is
another. A person with psychological
issues may not can handle the stress
of dealing with other people or the stress
of managing a business.
Something like woodworking might be
therapeutic when done for the sake of
doing it but stressful if the person were
to be reliant on it for income.

Yup. Watching the relief on the face of a woodworker friend of mine when they get a call for a few thousands worth of subcontracting in an otherwise tight month reminds me why I should be gratefull for the salary I pick up for being a wage-slave for HRH Liz II.
