Even Palestine gets more money than Israel, according to the graphic.

True, never believed Obama wanted a united Jerusalem, and this stance will probably get him a much needed renewed boost from the leftwing now as they have been disappointed with his time in govt. I know many hate the place with a passion but have to say I never had an issue with it. Guess its just a matter of time til its snuffed out without US support.

Just a little reminder and perspective...the Israelis and the Palestinians by 1967 and for 20 years since the UN res. creating her had little land in what is described as the 'West Bank'...shared Jerusalem and had taken over basically...where the British left.

But the Arab community and Palestine had never recognized Israel and in those 20 years...nothing much had changed. Eventually from Jordan, Syria (who shelled Israel from the Golan Heights for 15 years) and Egypt, the Israelis saw that all of her neighbors were closing in on her and acted all 'Roman'...Your enemies can't conquer (destroy) you because you are too busy conquering them. So the Israelis in 1967 went into the West Bank, took more land and all of Jerusalem consolidated the Sinai peninsula.. (since given back via treaty with Egypt)

So Obama's suggestion is and has been by many before him. Go back to the 67 borders, share Jerusalem and stop the fighting because you are all going to...exist.

This is a test for the Arabs in general and the Palestinians in particular. Will a consensus build large and long enough among the Arabs and in Palestine (if it matters anymore) to marginalize Iran, Hamas and the rest and get a deal done ?

I am thinking that these groups and their sponsor Iran, none giving a damn about Palestine and the so-called Palestinian question...will not buy this because their actions have very little to do with Palestinian statehood. If Palestine had become a fucking Beverly Hills, it wouldn't matter to those groups because they are at war with Israel and will remain so...forever.

Yes but Egypt was preparing to attack Israel from a demilitarised zone when Israel struck them. Then Jordan got involved and Israel struck back in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. It was a war on two fronts for a small strip of land. Sadly I doubt the Palers will turn their back on Hamas, Iran... Just last month there was a Hamas unity deal with Fatah.

Yes, but in the 73 war, Egypt did in fact get a large foothold in Sinai and forced the Israelis back to defend...you go it...the 67 border. It was only after we (US) resupplied Israel during that war...would it survive. Subsequent to the 73 war, Sadat had had enough (his brother was killed) and decided to go to Israel and make peace. The ensuing treaty put the Sinai fully back under Egypt's control, they got the oil and presto...peace with Israel and one that has lasted.

The single most telling result of that treaty for the big picture was that Sadat paid with his life and those Arabs who killed him and their sponsors, will not accept ANY peace with Israel...ever.

"I was responding to an erroneous post, I never said I think we should be giving foreign aid to anyone"

I'll take that. I should've put an FR up top.

But now that we're on the subject, does anyone support foreign aid ? I don't know anyone who does.

Don't answer right now.

T^T

Thought you were talking more about '67. Yeah in '73 the US saved Israel with the airlifts. It would have resulted in a terrible genocide so the US deserves a slap on the back for that. The peace deal was more generous to Egypt cause they got Israeli oil wells as well as billions in aid each year but it was a really big gain for Israel's legitimacy to be recognised by Egypt. The Arabs hated it though. I think they expelled Egypt from the Arab League. Even the French objected to the deal!! The thing is that it was a pretty cold peace. Yeah without Mubarak it'll boil over again which will be a real tragedy for both.
