Open Letter to Pols / Religion Forum:

Years ago I watched the West Wing television show. I found it smart, insightful, and educational. I loved being able to see the process of politics. When they had Anslie Hayes on there, I learned (finally) about Republicans in a way that made sense. I felt like I could at last see their perspective. That show - whether I agreed with everything or not - was terrific.

There was a scene in which Lily Tomlin's character was being interviewed for job as secretary to the president. She was going to not be chosen because she had disagreed with a policy decision previously. In her response she called the president, "Mr. Bartlett" or perhaps "President Bartlett." She may have not agreed with him, but she did not resort to name calling.

He called her "a class act."

fast forward a few years:

I had serious issues with George Bush - both of them. But in the end, they were the presidents of my country and as such I respected their position and their authority. I don't recall whether or not I ever called one of them a name (I may have called the one "W" but that was not meant as an insult - I don't recall if I did or not. I know I certainly did call him that in my mind). I was living abroad when George W. Bush was in power. I experienced a tiny bit of how much people in other countries hate my own. Even so, I like to think I stood by my principles without the need to call someone a name - especially someone who was giving public service.

I have never liked certain policies. The person who holds the office, however, still is the president.

While you may not like what President Obama does / doesn't do, your action of calling him names does not harm anyone. It merely makes you look like you have no class.

Best,
sunshine

whats to be in awe about a man who is nothing more than the executive minister of a cestie que vie constructive trust?

Why shouldnt they call them names?

Hell they call me names and I am their boss.  (at least on paper) LMAO

Besides name calling is how some americans debate issues and display their advanced level of education in this country.

Be nice to ttem they need love too.

I agree wholeheartedly, Sunshine. It is entirely too easy to criticize this administration without going into hate-speech mode. I find it disrespectful to the office, distasteful in discussion, and counterproductive in getting people to think, instead of blindly react.

I loved the West Wing (though it maybe should have been called the Left Wing). Smart characters, good dialogue, and a nice sense of humor. I think Lilly Tomlin's character had written something about poisoning the President though (arsenic?), and he gave her a pass.

Hey sunshine, I loved that show, and I agree with your post.

I also admit I tend to allow myself to be pulled into the mire.... But I am only human. Show me respect, and you will have mine.

Why?

Why should I have respect for the office?

It is just a government position, but somehow we have decided over the years to make it a position of royalty, exactly the opposite of what was intended.

I don't think royalty is a good analogy, RML, but the President is a symbolic head of state, as well as a temporary chief executive. That's worth something.

I dunno. Would it make you stop posting conspiracies for a while? I could have a crack at it.

What if the POTUS or VPOTUS commits treason?

Should we not call them traitors, out of respect for the office?

I don`t think so.

If you get too precious about your leaders you'll end up like the Vatican city or worse still Syria.

Does the fact that the real name of this country is United Conspiracies of America mess up your landscape view?

After all the beloved founders were conspirators against the king who founded a confederation which if you understand what that is, is a conspiratorial union LOL!!!

Oohh touchie there.

Why so defensive?

And weren`t you the one who slandered President Obama last year with the scary-black-man-new-black-panther fake story ?

Of course you did it without the use of insulting names.

Ass! lol
