I've been incensed since I found out they existed.  I counterprotested against them when they inflicted themselves upon Colorado a year ago.  They said some nasty anti-Semitic stuff that I didn't like at all.

Why hasn't the main Baptist organization repudiated them?

No, I'm not incensed. If I got angry about all the profound ignorance in this world, I would spend my entire life angry, and this is not how I want to live.

I am saddened that in the year 2011 people choose to perpetuate that level of ignorance, but people are where they are, our society is where it is. You can't change anyone but yourself.

Though I strive to be a person who counters ignorance when and where I can, I'm aware that is an uphill struggle.

There must be some way to lock them up for being criminally insane or something like that.
They've gone way beyond "free-speech."

I think these types of people suffer from a particular type of and all too typical of those that fervantly proselytize...mental illness. Only their beliefs are the real beliefs and to disagree is blasphemy. Then worse...they project what sin they say the see in society and tell us it is the cause of tornadoes ? [sic]

You see once one create their own gods...then one has carte blanch to suggest that any part of society that they do not think properly falls in line with their religious criteria...is a sinner and deserving of this kind of vitriol. Another reason why individual faith is one thing...organized religion is quite another.

MrRodgers, I disagree.  I suspect that they know full well that they're provoking responses, and that they live off the proceeds of the resultant lawsuits.  Crazy as an unethical fox.

This is not :religion" in ANY sense of the word.

Stephen, they were here in Myrtle Beach last year too protesting in front of catholic churches.
I was driving around doing some recon with a wrist rocket sling shot and some ball bearings in the car but there were cop cars everywhere!

I'm incensed but I try to let it go. There are too many arrogant, ignorant, bigoted, judgemental, cruel people in the world... Hell, throughout all of history... to dwell on it. You can't save everyone in the world and I have no desire to go through life in a state of impotent rage.

Personally, I've found that the best salve for such feelings is to act locally for the public good. Do what you can do, in other words, like get involved with the local food pantry or clothes closet or any number of other things you can do to help your neighbors. One person collecting food does more to alleviate suffering than a thousand protesters dancing like idiots in the streets or a million people venting on message boards.

But what to do when you are confronted with such obnoxiousness up close? There have been many good recomendations like the silent protest (everyone turns their back upon them and stays silent while the bigots rant and rave) or set up booths to collect for charities you know they will hate (like advancing the cause of gay marriage). Even those of us who are not on the scene can still get involved. If you've a few bucks to spare, make a donation to a gay rights cause in the name of the WBC and then send them a post card informing them (be sure to thank them for the inspiration) [:)]

Yes, you can lock people up and ignore the free speech issue when someone yells fire in a crowded area and causes a stampede death.   These people are only like Rush, hurting or killing no one physically, except in the minds and hearts.

Why is there a next?  Because it's America, capitalism and freedom and all that. Nobody stops with one success.  Just ask Wall Street.
