“The US has a record for the most stringent and thorough security and entry requirements in the world, and they felt the need to enhance their security checks further, which they have the power to do.”

Am thinking the USA is very quickly becoming a no go zone for foreign tourists, in which case those that have threatened and attacked the US have already won, they need not lift a finger beyond their prescence, as the USA is screwing itself up from within. Soon people will cross America off their list of places to go and spend their money, if US border security becomes more zealous, or foreigners just get plain fed up with what already exists.

But with such security there can't be another attack from abroad can there ?

I livein a city very frequently visited by foreign tourists. I have not noticed a decline in tourists since 2001 (except for a short period right after 9/11).

Except for gangs are now using cell phones to attack tourists along the Lake.    Quite a few this past month.   So bad that they closed the beach over it.

I think safety, total safety, is an illusion.  They can add to the border checks, increase airport security, but there is no way to prevent another attack.   Those that want to, will find a way.

There are thousands of miles of unguarded property between the US and Canada, granted alot of it is fairly rugged, but it's wide open.  We are assuming the terrorists will be traveling on the roads most used.

I recently re-read Tom Clancy's Patriot Games, and it's about terrorists, and he goes on and on about what we, America, wouldn't ever do in the fight against terrorists because of the stain it would have on our national honor and sense of decency.

Yet here we are.

you're confused. The group that attacked people did it one weekend and they got arrested. The closure of North Av. beach wasn't related (and more than 2 miles from where the crimes occured

You get stroppy with immigration people, they are gonna be stroppy back, simple lesson.
They must get fed up with gobby stroppy assholes who think cos they are white and british *insert your non dangerous types here* entitles them to special procedures.
They would be the first to bitch, sue and complain should a terrorist or bomber get in or out of a country, they just dont like being inconvenienced.

*being white and british*  I learned my lesson early after 9/11.
Getting home is no freakin picnic either. its the same at Heathrow and Gatwick and Stanstead, its the same at Toronto and most entry points into the US.
It doesn't matter what you look like, you get stroppy with the man, you are lucky you  don't have cavity checks.
Can you imagine the uproar if another attack did happen, wether it be the US, London, Paris or any other area..
Nothing is gonna stop any one from causing attacks if they are really determined, but to believe only "darkies and mooozlems" are the problem is fucking ignorant.

Alot of shootings too.   We pretty much need to barbed wire Chicago and Detroit up- so that the riff raff is contained.  Particularly  Philly- and NJ- so that my town can be safe.

I can only hope...now if we could just stop the immigrants too.

The above is a silly suggestion but I was making fun of your contention because people want to come here and I’m sure would like to be safe.

Freedom means shit when your airliner is in the hands of terrorists heading for a suicide target.

Yeah, you would think that wouldn't ya. I know I did before I recently had input into a client's business plan as he gussied it up for the VC people. The inbound tourism surveys all seem to be rising with every year since 05 in the boston area. And next year, they're expecting a new influx when air china starts arrivals at Logan (this fall if I remember correctly).
Oh, and based on the positive exchange rate for the Canadian Loonie, they're expecting record tourism from Canada in at very least Maine and New Hampshire
So in the New England area, tourism isn't looking too bad.

It was my impression that the weakness of the dollar actually increased tourism from Europe.... although I could be wrong about that as I do not stay abreast of these things on a year-by-year basis

Well, I'd say that Canadian investment in the West coast of Fla. would dispute your premise entirely but I'd be wrong. With the decline in the real estate values along the Gulf coast they are doing a fine job of buying homes and condos. Overall, foreign tourism is down and the government is trying to help encourage more.
http://usforeignpolicy.about.com/b/2010/02/26/welcoming-foreigners-to-america-the-tourism-promotion-act.htm (older article Scumbag Ensign is noted as Nev Senator)(of course DeMint was against the idea...imagine that?)
It started a downward trend in 2000 even before the increased security measures, safety of our borders would trump most desire for tourism.
When I have traveled abroad as an American, I have had to go through customs and security on a number of occasions, no better or no worse than traveling here and going through TSA or customs. The exception being my last trip to Mexico where I was pretty well waved through everything upon arrival. It seems a white American male is exempt from security intrusion in Zihuatanejo. When I have traveled, I have always wondered how differently I'd be treated if I had a dark complexion and remotely looked Arab, or better yet wore a traditional Arab male headdress or clothing. I'd bet you. even the Mexican authorities might get out the metal detectors, microscope and magnifying glass.
