Oily hair does not mean an oily scalp.  I have horrible eczema/dry skin on my scalp, and I second the others suggestions of tea tree oil products (although they never helped me) or other dandruff products like head and shoulders (which has been the only thing to ever work for me... including prescription meds.)  Your problems could simply just be a dry scalp.

I would also consider that it could be allergies, through either food or contact.  Have you used anything new (or reformulated) lately?  Personally, pantene or herbal essences always makes me itch.

Most importantly...  as someone who will literally get spontaneous hives... scratching will not only irritate your skin and open it up for infection, but it will also cause you skin to itch more.  Don't scratch!

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/15/2006 7:36:16 PM)

You could have a detergent allergy.  I had an allergic reaction to the fabric softener and laundry detergent I was using.  It made me itch all over, though.  So I guess that doesn't help you much.  It could just be severely dry scalp.  Try a hot oil treatment after a clarifying shampoo and see what it does.

Do you use any hair products?  Have you used anything new recently?

No NOMC I don't belive in hair products other than shampoo and conditioner for personal use. I wash it and air dry it.

amativedame Nope just washed and wore as usual. of course it is hot here and I do sweat so maybe sweat's bugging me

Sorry, it's actually called "Nourish Spa" - I looked at the bottle a little closer this morning in the shower!

I agree Tea Tree Oil is fabulous for many purposes, but if you have actual broken skin, use with care (diluted preferably) or you will be howling like someone lashed you.

And yes, I have "dandruff" or very dry skin right between my eyes (where glasses rest).  I use just a dab of pure Vitamin E oil or avocado oil to keep the skin from cracking there.  Same on the neck.

A great skin lotion to try if you have eczema anywhere on your body, but especially on your hands, is Lubrex lotion.  I can only find it online or at my doctor's, and it is a bit expensive, but works wonderfully to prevent flares (which to me is worth gold!).

Good luck ...

Blue bird I thought it was strange I had eye brow dander, I am glad to know I am not weird. my eyebrows the skin under them is very flakey, and the boney plate rght above bride of glasses is scaley too. All though that I suspect is from getting my face waxed, because she did that area and ever since the skin between eyes have been scaley

tbear25 -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/20/2006 8:18:53 PM)

I have had the same itchy problem for a few weeks and have tried scalpacin-it works in stopping the itch for a few hours, thats all  neutragena (sp)  shampoo doesn't help either.

amativedame -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/20/2006 9:44:58 PM)

Neutrogena is less likely to really help in itching.  It has coal tar extract which can be great in fixing dandruff in some people, but it doesn't have a lot of skin soothers.  The scalpacin may be helping more because it has things such as aloe and tea tree oil in it thats helping to soothe your scalp.  You may want to try something that has a higher concentrate of those ingredients.

I am partial to head and shoulders.  I got into them when they came out with their conditioners several years ago... and fell in love with the fact that it fixed my itchy skin at the time and their volumizing one gave me the best volume I've ever had (which salon products never seemed to accomplish with my very fine hair.)  I've switched over and started using their shampoos and personally think they've come a long way.  I wouldn't give up my stuff for the finest more expensive stuff around.  Brand loyalty aside... after browsing some dandruff products online, I've found that selson blue has a moisturizing treatment with aloe as a first ingredient... that may or may not make a big difference for you.  (Then again it could also mean heavy "greasy" hair too but that's my fine hair talking lol.)

Your scalp isn't much different than your skin... dry skin tends to mean itchy skin.

desertdancer -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/20/2006 10:52:09 PM)

Typically when clients come in with scalp problems and dandruf in the eyebrows it is psoriasis, T-gel works wonders as well as Tea tree oil from Paul Mitchell I would combine one of those two with Aerican Crew Conditioner for men, I know its for men and smells manly but it has peperment ooils in it that also help..also too seeing a doctor would be advised

It could also be an allergy as suggested above..any new foods, shampoos, conditioners laundry detergant..soap, dish soap, anything that you have changed could be the problem

good luck

yours,
dancer

I was told once, itchy scalp was from to much soap remaining in hair, which at that time it was. because you could see the residue.  We haven't changed anything same shampoo I've used for years, well ok it's only been months for this one kind, I use pantien exlusivly when we have it. I eat the same minus the hotpockets and pizza rolls that used to be a monthly buy at the grocer, We use the same kind of detergent month after month, Tide color safe .

Thing is like I said it's very particular spots that itch and hurt. high above the ears the crown of the head, and the nape of the neck sometimes. I don't have scalp dandruff, except for the tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniest bit where the hair connects to the forhead lines.

Benidrill has helped, so I know if it's sever I can take that.

I've used dandruff shampoo before yes head and shoulders and it didn't do anything for me or my hair. or the itch  And nutragina stinks like gasolin and didn't help either lol. and it doesn't make your hair look shiney or nice like pantien pro v does. I haven;t tried selson blue yet.

redpetals -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/21/2006 1:09:50 PM)

my son had dandruff, big patchy scaley stuff..after years of trying all kinds of stuff ,i just happened to go low carb and stopped bringing milk into the house, within a month the patches were noticibly dimminished.
they went away completly within sixweeks and so did most of his other allergies.
.i dont want to piss off the good commerce police, but milk is one of the worst things you can ingest..
now that hes all grown up and out of my house he drinks milk and guess what he has again?
he limits his milk intake but its not enough...try going cold turkey. the itchiness will stop quickly...cheeses dont have the same effect..
you can always research it on line..and it doesnt cost  you anything to try..

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/21/2006 1:13:36 PM)

grins I don't drink milk redpetals, milks disgusting to me lol. It smells off half the time even when it's not and it's taste is enough to trigger my gag relexes. We use soy milk now on the rare ocasion ever I need milk. I use soy in my ceral, and it's only like half a teaspoon or two to soak it.

the temples right above my ears and above my forhead and at the crown are itching insainly it's driving me mad. It's not flea's and it's not lice. I had thought it was shampoo residue since I've been madly itchy last week on and off too. but I rinsed completely there was no shampoo at all left on my scalp. And it's not all over itching or all at the same time either, nor is it constant.

Even so I am misreably itchy and re washing hair don't help.

I have the same problem...its not the shampoo or eczema, its the skin condition psirrois ( I know I have that spelled wrong,I think),anyway
I have to use the T-Gel shampoo...the 1% coal tar kind.I also have a solution to put on the spots that really itch, its a presription from the doc.
The name of the stuff is  Fluocinolone Acetonide Topical solution....I can tell you that it works awesome...but I seem to get headaches if I use it more than 2 times a week. I hope this info helps.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/21/2006 1:28:16 PM)

It should! I have to go to the dr tomorow to get my tb test read and recorded that it's negative I'll ask about having them check my scalp perhaps while I am there.

My doc took one look and knew instantly.
The T-Gel does have some kinds of the 1% coal tar with menthol which helps sooth the itch. They(neutragena) also have just started a new line with the same stuff as head and shoulders so make sure you get the Coal Tar one...Its brown and kinda stinky.
Glad I could help out [:D]

Stress is one thing that can use skin conditions, the other is hormones or lack there of. At certain points during your cycle your skin changes, you might be experiencing it in your hair.

bandit25 -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/21/2006 5:07:43 PM)

OMG...I have just SUFFERED through the worst allergic reaction I have ever had.  I used H&S citrus scented shampoo and my scalp, hairline and forearms broke out in a HORRIBLE rash.  I'm on steroids now and the rash is drying...along with the rest of my skin.  This should take a good six months to clear up.

desertdancer -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/21/2006 5:20:48 PM)

Bandit25-

I'm so sorry to hear this, that's horrible...I suggest a skin test before ever switching shampoo's or conditioners..I do them when I try new things.  Take a small ammount and dap it into the crook of your elbo then wait 24 hours, if nothing happens you should be safe...if you react, toss it away or give it to a friend.  Being in the hair business and being exposed to chemicals and shampoos and things, my skin has grown very sensitive to all sorts of things

Good luck, and i hope you get to feeling better fast

by treating the very oily hair you are stripping your scalp of oils.

someone suggested dandruff shampoo... i'd go with that.. and you can't go wrong with Neutrogena...

Having said that, did you change your shampoo or any hair care products recently??  Is it a new bottle? You may be allergic to what you're using if it's a new brand... OR  have developed an allergy to things... Try simply switching what your using..

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/21/2006 11:06:00 PM)

Nope MCP it's not new shampoo like I said I been using it for about a year now along with painten when I have it.

Bluebird -> RE: Severly itching scal not flea or lice related. (5/22/2006 12:11:55 AM)

Probably won't affect your hair, but do ditch the Tide detergent.  I use All Free & Clear liquid detergent - I was actually sent to a specialty hospital for a week by my allergist and that is one of the things they STRONGLY suggest - it is even better than Ivory Snow or Dreft.  Tide (even the Free variety) is one of the harshest detergents - probably why it works so well.

Someone else mentioned it already, but don't shower/bathe with HOT water, use warm even though hot makes you temporarily feel better.  Try to take 2 lukewarm baths (15-20 minutes) per day with nothing but water (and keep your whole body, including head, under the water as much as possible - you want to saturate all the skin), and then a quick shower with shampoo no more than once a day.  The soaps/shampoos dry out your skin & hair, and unless you are vigorously exercising or otherwise perspiring, you really don't need that much.  As soon as you get out of the tub, pat dry (don't rub) and smooth a gentle unscented lotion/cream all over.  Vanicream or Lubrex are my favorites.

BTW - I actually cannot use Pantene - I like what it does for my hair (volume, body, etc.), but my scalp hates it .
