I get you point leadership, but if you were at said convention and engaged in said asshat behavior, I doubt you would be the subject of such vitriol. I think your audience would just turn and walk away, not take time out of their busy day to tell you what an idiot you are. Why? Because people aren't nearly as nasty in person as they are when they are anonymous. I am also not sure that the analogy of collarchat forums to a physics convention full of phds is especially apt. There are all kinds of experience levels here, including people as inexperienced as myself and the op. Example: I started Internet dating on vanilla sites a few years ago, and I could have used a tip list. Hopefully, I would have been discriminating enough to ignore the bullshit on any such list, and just gone with the cream. Although, I don't know why I am standing up for the op. Although I wasn't as offended by his original posting as some, his later comments do indicate a sort of "asshatness". I guess because I started a post on unwanted comments in emails a few days ago, and the overwhelming response I. Got was "delete and block, you idiot.". Or words to that effect. Why are the forums any different? One doesn't HAVE to respond. quote:

ORIGINAL: Iamsemisweet Well, I hate to get caught in the line of fire, but why has this thread taken such a personal turn? Just because someone posts something that ”you already know" does not mean that it should be construed as a personal attack. He is entitled to his opinion, although some of his later posts indicate that he is trying to be provocative. And it is working. OK, let's put this in some other context then to clear it up. Let's assume that I am attending a conference on particle physics. Attending the conference are a ton of Nobel laureates, published PHD's, and generally "big brains". Now, I'm not one such. I just got in because my wife is attending. At the lunch break, I walk up to a group of people discussing some arcane topic and start to pontificate on F=ma. Now, don't you think that pretty much everyone else in the room is going to be thinking I"m an asshat? We don't think it's a personal attack. We think it's stupid and pretentious.
