No, I did not misunderstand your post. You have actually just made it worse by implying that an interest in intellectual discourse and astrology cannot co-exist. Who are you to deem an interest "silly"?

It is people like you that demonstrate how narrow a view most people have about intellect. I can tell you that to me, intellectual compatibility means I can communicate on many topics, serious or not, with many people in a clearly articulated manner. I find well rounded people with eclectic interests to be intriguing.

If you think that being into intellectual discourse and being able to discuss philosophy one moment and then celebrity gossip the next means you are a fake, you have some serious issues.

What you call fake, I call desirable.

i want to roll around in sexyred's brain

someone with that "either, or, neither, nor" approach would be too one-dimensional for me. i love talking about high-falutin' brainy topics, but if i also can't just have a run-of-the-mill conversation with someone, then what's the point?

i guess i can possibly see how the OP was shooting for humor, but it just isn't.

You can roll around with me anytime. :)

Seriously, if he was aiming for humor it would be different, but clearly the subsequent posts declaring that astrology was a pseudo science, etc. just continues to show the narrow view of intellect.

I have often found that people who make claims like this are trying to hard to be seen as smart.

For the record, I am an Aquarius with a major Scorpio rising sign. Which goes with my IQ. I am stylish like that.

exactly! pseudoscience or not, some people just find it fun. it has nothing to do with their ability to carry on an intelligent conversation. if you are intelligent at the expense of being fun, then i probably won't like your brand of intelligence anyway.
besides, there are all sorts of types of intelligence; the "intelligence" of a western-educated person who adores and absolutely relies on science is different than the intelligence of an Australian aboriginal person whose belief system teaches very differently, but they are both valuable ways of thinking for the people who subscribe to them.

i don't like elitism, or perceived elitism. if you are who you say you are, you'll shine through.

Come on Ron. Admit the truth.

You'd just be having the conversation in the hopes I'd agree to have Carol blow you later on.

The thing that I admire most about Ron is the fact that he's consistent.  There is NEVER any question about what motivates him.

I get you point leadership, but if you were at said convention and engaged in said asshat behavior, I doubt you would be the subject of such vitriol. I think your audience would just turn and walk away, not take time out of their busy day to tell you what an idiot you are. Why? Because people aren't nearly as nasty in person as they are when they are anonymous.

I am also not sure that the analogy of collarchat forums to a physics convention full of phds is especially apt. There are all kinds of experience levels here, including people as inexperienced as myself and the op. Example: I started Internet dating on vanilla sites a few years ago, and I could have used a tip list. Hopefully, I would have been discriminating enough to ignore the bullshit on any such list, and just gone with the cream.

Although, I don't know why I am standing up for the op. Although I wasn't as offended by his original posting as some, his later comments do indicate a sort of "asshatness". I guess because I started a post on unwanted comments in emails a few days ago, and the overwhelming response I. Got was "delete and block, you idiot.". Or words to that effect. Why are the forums any different? One doesn't HAVE to respond.

Well, I hate to get caught in the line of fire, but why has this thread taken such a personal turn? Just because someone posts something that ”you already know" does not mean that it should be construed as a personal attack. He is entitled to his opinion, although some of his later posts indicate that he is trying to be provocative. And it is working.

OK, let's put this in some other context then to clear it up. Let's assume that I am attending a conference on particle physics. Attending the conference are a ton of Nobel laureates, published PHD's, and generally "big brains". Now, I'm not one such. I just got in because my wife is attending. At the lunch break, I walk up to a group of people discussing some arcane topic and start to pontificate on F=ma.

Now, don't you think that pretty much everyone else in the room is going to be thinking I"m an asshat? We don't think it's a personal attack. We think it's stupid and pretentious.

Nope, the weight unit in Britain and the US are the same, in the rest of Europe a pound is half a kilo or 500 gram, in the UK and in Britain a pound is 0.45 kilos or 453.592 gram

I didn't realize you could receive a PhD in blowjobs. But I'm sure that it's a fascinating specialty that could take a lifetime to truly understand all of the subtleties.  In fact, I think you'd better get back to your research.

Yes, I know a few fetish models who have profiles here. Some of us were unkind to the one who used swastikas over her nipples. A friend of mine knows her offsite.

Really? I thought they used the metric system in Britain, cause all the road signs I saw and my speedometer was in Kilometers. And I bought meat by the kilo and my milk by the milliliter.(I swear the store only sold those smaller cartons)

I missed that, perhaps. It doesn't sound too out-there to me. There have been Holocaust survivors who paid prodommes to dress up as Nazis and interrogate them. Just because you sexualize horror doesn't mean you want it to happen again in real life.

Here's the thing,

You came over like a jackass, there's no polite way to put it. I'm sure that you're not a jackass, but that was the very first impression I got from your post.

Then you say something like this...

quote:

ORIGINAL: PatrickG38
It is perhaps a comment on the sad state of our culture that the desire to tear down is so strong and that so many people use what could be a useful forum and meeting place for people into what is certainly a minority lifestyle into a site mostly of scammers, pornographers and fakes. It would seem that those seriously into our way of living should be the most concerned with these issues.
Good luck to all in finding happiness.

Can you not see, as someone who claims a degree of intelligence, how someone like me might easily fall into the the terrible error of inferring from this statement that, in addition to being a jackass, you're also a pompous asshat?

I find a couple of things objectionable about your OP, and your subsequent responses...

The op was a combination of the childishly obvious, and the simply wrong.

The "intellectual discourse is incompatible with an interest in astrology" riff was plain silly, and implies a fantastic intellectual arrogance which I usually perceive to be a real and deeply seated lack of intellect.

I'm absolutely fascinated by creationism. I think it's nonsense, but it's a topic that interests me enormously.

I don't believe in Astrology (I'm a typical scorpio in that regard) but I'd be interested in discussing it.

As it happens, I don't believe in a "god" either, but what sort of arsehole would simply write off people of faith as "lacking in intellect"?

And if someone does believe in astrology, then what sort of wanker would write them off intellectually, if person "A" is allowed to believe in a fictional deity, I'll defend person "B"'s right to believe in Astrology.

I could be wrong, but I think Great Britain remained on (or returned to?) the scales that the US uses. the EU went to metric...

again, I could be wrong

Hmm... I think you were in a different Britain. None of our road signs are in KM, and the speedometers are in KM and MPH.

We do now sell food and gas using the metric system though ( Thanks to our membership of the European Union). When it comes to gas, I miss the Imperial Gallon - so much superior to your diminutive American Gallon ;-)

Yeah I was too busy with other stuff(sexy British accents) to ask about their measuring system, however I think they were using the Euro(?) at that time instead of pounds British sterling, of course the Euro was rally the only currency I dealt with at that time cause I was too embarrassed to display my lack of ability to calculate the British Exchange rate for change and stuff.
