If you were laying on the beach and a fish walked up to you then asked for directions wouldn't that be kind of freaky?

~FR~

I've gone from once wishing to be a nun to being disgusted by religion. None of it makes any sense other than a nice bunch of stories--kind of like Greek mythology. Only I don't see anyone in this day and age willing to kill or die for that ancient mythology. Why kill or die for current mythology? I do not get it.

I do not understand why people have to comfort themselves with fairy tales.

However, I fail to understand the condescention of some atheists, calling the religious "idiots" and "crusaders" and so on. Look, I don't claim there is a god, but, as Albert Einstein once said, "Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love." As with all good allegorical sayings, obviously what Mr. Einstein meant was that there are things which science cannot explain and might not ever be able to explain (No, your atheist hoo-ha about dopamine levels in the brain will not explain people falling in love).

That being said, I think a woman will be elected President before an atheist in this country, and that shows you just how deep these two prejudices are.

One reason for religion is we know we are going to die.

And the thought that it all just ends,...... has been way to much for our somewhat limited intellect(historically)to fathom.

So when someone says hey it doesn`t just end, naturally, people are going to be interested. Then comes every conceivable heavenly fairy tale scenario and belief, who`s only limit is our imaginations.

If there wasn`t a god,we`d make one

However that evades the point, Brain and Dawkins both are attacked quite freely for their comments by people from across the spectrum of belief while those who denigrate atheists are only confronted by atheists.

I do not see many people attacking atheists on this site. Maybe I missed it? I have been accused of attacking atheists on this site because I do not like reading the bashing of believers (people of faith of any stripe). If I had seen people saying that atheists were bad, evil, etc etc etc... I WOULD say something. I have said it in my real life to people who have expressed such ideas to me. I am NOT shy about sticking up for people.

In my circles it is a rare sentiment, and I am being honest....

My point was that you pulled out someone who was hateful of atheists, and I pulled out a very verbal atheist that is hateful towards religious people. It is all hate, no matter how you slice it. It is all bigotry, too.

It doesn't happen much on this site, although it does happen, but it is amazingly common and accepted in the larger world.

For another example Steve Harvey had some outrageous stuff to say about atheists on a cable interview show and no one but atheists seemed to notice

Not me, but we each have our own experiences...

I have never had an atheist stop me in front of a grocery store to ask me if I believed in god, for example.

Although most of his statements that are claimed to be attacks against the religious turn out to be attacks on religion. For instance he does not call the religious dumb, he says religious ideas are dumb, there is a difference between the two statements.

There are a lot of people out there who feel tying a women up is sick, twisted and abusive. Now they are not saying you are sick, twisted and abusive, just the idea you have that it would be fun to do it is bad. Now I am sure you are ok with this because they are not bashing you, they are only bashing the way you live, right?

So you are saying no one should ever make a statement someone else would disagree with?

Your content and tone trolling is tedious but this was spectacularly dumb even for you.

Did I say that? You really need to work on your comprehension skills there.

I am sure not all are like this because they always get around to atheists are smarter than Christians so they must be right.
And their proof that they are smarter.......they are atheists.  Yes the classic circular argument.

DomKen, I am not suggesting that atheists aren't often vilified by some in the media. But that's largely because we, and also Muslims in the US, are the groups about whom it is still quasi-acceptable to make disparaging remarks in public. However, I find that significantly different from the almost visceral antipathy I have seen sometimes targeted against other races and ethnicities, and LGBT people. Frankly, in the West, I haven't come across any accounts recently of someone being physically abused or even killed for being an atheist. I don't think one can say that about race or sexual orientation.

I wouldn't say this rises to the level of "discrimination", more a double standard. Yesterday, i posted on Facebook about my dad's funeral. I mentioned that he was a life long atheist, and how his memorial service reflected that. A Christian friend commented something along the lines of "well, I am sure he felt that way until he met Jesus.". Irritated me, quite honestly, since I know if I responded to some of the religious postings I see in a similar manner, I would have been subject to all kinds of criticism for being intolerant.

So how would you prefer this person to say this statement? Something like "I always found stories like in the bible to be on par with fairytales, but if people find them comforting I am okay with that"?

I have the same opinion, I would have just worded it in a more PC sorta way.

No it`s more like theists can`t prove there is a god.

That`s why it`s called faith.

or they could be real honest and just say "I don't understand how you can be stupid enough to believe that bullshit."

Any way you put it, it will sound rude, so why sugar coat it. I am just surprised that he followed that comment with "However, I fail to understand the condescention of some atheists"

My Christian brother had this girlfriend that would post religious iconography on my page on myspace. I asked her politely not to do this anymore, because I do not like my page littered with photos of Jesus or a cross.... she then told my brother I was persecuting her, and he told her that I had every right to want my page the way I liked it. She then posted "I'm praying for you" with no photos, etc.... I took her off my friend's list and blocked her.

I had a girl I went all through school with add me to her facebook, where she would post anti-Obama, god fearing BS. I did not remove her, but she removed me.... why? Because I am an anthropologist, and therefore I must be heavily into Darwin

People have the right to make association choices based on religion. They have every right to negative feelings about other religions, especially if they have dealt with people that are annoying about their religions... at the same time, having no religion, except airy fairy Taoism annoys people too, I just do not give a crap if they are annoyed with me.
